Yeah, same. Thanks to our orange rear end in a top hat I actually owe $700 in taxes instead of getting my usual refund, so this month's a little slim. Bought platinum anyway though, figure after what, twelve years I might as well be able to send people PMs about how stupid they are.

Yeah it's all Trump's fault, let's totally absolve the loving legislature that actually has control over these things.

The teaching hospital by me offered a self-pay discount/payment arrangement package that covered life threatening conditions and medications but it did have restrictions like medicine was only covered if you went to the hospital pharmacy and you could not refuse if they were going to bring students in. What bills you got were after the discount kicked in, you could break the payments down to something more manageable. It got discontinued when the ACA started, but if you were broke enough, you could apply for Medicare/Medicaid.

So it's more your insurance doesn't accept the hospital

You'd think at least they'd pay whatever they normally pay and you'd only have to pay the difference.

Then again, it seems a 'normal' rate just doesn't exist.

Lots of good people suffer there for no decent reason than accidents of birth. Makes me feel both guilty and like we should do something. Sorry Lowtax.

Met and briefly did some work for a ludicrously wealthy American once. Had a replica of Sandringham House built in the middle of a stretch of woods. Dude would have peacocks flown to his house (I assume as the only real road he had was super sketchy and thin) so he could shoot them with a compound bow. Peacocks are not the smartest or most cunning of prey so this wasn't a game of skill. It was just killing something semi rare and beautiful because you can. One day he was teaching his son how to "hunt" like his papa. Was so glad to never see that place again. I've met some Saudi's that make that guy look like Bernie Sanders. They are really are a different species. There are exceptions of course, but most I've met either thought the poor should just work harder at best, or felt that someone must fail in order for the right people to succeed. Heard one guy actually say aloud "someone's gotta be the gazelle".

By all means, praise the good ones that are nice and give but don't expect anything from the wealthy aside from what you manage to forcibly pry from their claws. People talk about passive and peaceful resistance but what good did the Occupy movement actually do?

Jeez.... Im sad now. We need some Bortus and Klyden karaoke in the next episode.

American healthcare is such Kafkan joke. It's the most American thing ever actually, it's excellent for the wealthy, and the poor have to constantly watch their backs as they try to bait and switch and play games.

uXs posted:

How can a hospital just refuse your insurance? Like, what the hell, how is that legal?

It's the official industry of "I am altering the deal, pray I do not alter it any further". It's essentially a casino game for both sides. The house is betting you won't need as much treatment, or that they rig the system so you can't get it, and you're gambling that should you need treatment you happen to fall in the right hole at the right time as for it to count for anything.

It's not even enough to have insurance in this country. You have to meet the deductible where you pay for everything (1000-3000 bucks or more ), and then most plans will pay like 80% up to another higher number, until they finally cover all of it for that year, only for it to reset next year. When people try to scare you about taxes in Europe, they conveniently do not factor in the cost of actually needing medical care or just paying copays every month. I did the math a couple years ago, at my former rate of pay at 45k per year, sure I would pay 1000 more in tax in the UK, but if I actually needed healthcare I would exceed that easily in the US.

One thing to keep in mind is that health insurance is expensive and crazy inflation wise its one of the main reasons wages have been stagnant. Alot of wage growth have gone into ever more lovely health insurance.

My employer, a health insurance company, "helpfully" moved us over to high deductible plans a few years back. I won't say the evilly euphemistic phrase that they used to describe the plan, but yeah, it sucked because I (and just about everyone else) was perfectly fine paying $15 to go to the doctor or $75 to go to the ER, with other crap going to a $500 deductible.

There are a couple of things I have come to like about the plan. The premium is smaller by quite a bit, I qualify for an HSA (pre-tax deduction for health expenses; eligible expenses are defined by the IRS), and my company not only contributes to my HSA, but it puts a bunch of its annual contribution in at the beginning of the year to keep me from getting deductiblefucked.

Sounds like I'm shilling for that plan, doesn't it? Well, trust me, I'm not. This plan works for me because 1) I make a decent amount of money, 2) my company goes above and beyond what others do in order to make the plan more palatable, and 3) they will detonate the chip in my head if I say anything truly negative about glorious insurance plan.

Now... if you don't work for a company that gives you a deep cut on the premium, or if you don't make much money and/or can't save anything in an HSA? Yeah, the plan is utter garbage, and the only thing you can say about it is that it's better than not having insurance at all. That's the default height of that low-rear end bar, by the way: better than nothing.
