It goes like this: 1. Some women prefer a partner taller than them, so they say so. 2. Men find out about this and lie about their height an inch or two to gain an advantage. 3. Women get lied to so many times about height that their whole perception of what is "average" gets skewed upwards. 4. Men lie even more to the point where women think that 6 feet is an average height (but the real male average is still 5'9") 5. Women post even higher height requirements because they're being gaslit about how tall everyone is. 6. Men get mad about this and decide it's women's fault for being shallow whores. This is even ignoring the fact that women who publicly state a minimum height for a partner are still a small minority of available partners. See also: dick size.

More than one webcomic has managed it, some by keeping the same slapstick tone even as the stakes increase, others by a gradual shift in tone and genre from gag-a-day to serialized drama. I can't think of any offhand that successfully handled an abrupt swerve from comedy into drama rather than a gradual mutation, but there are probably some. The thing is, for every webcomic that attempts that and sticks the landing, there are dozens if not hundreds that hosed it up and either rapidly slid into irrelevance or self-combusted spectacularly. And I suspect that most of the ones that do pull it off had something of that nature planned early on, rather than waking up one morning and going "I am indwelt by the Spirit of Bad Posting, which compels me to add a Serious Storyline about Real-World Issues to my webcomic 'ShitCats: Cats Who Are Shitheads' and then demands that I post through it when this is badly received". The one that I remember actually pulling it off was Life Of Riley, which actually made it to like 400 or so pages of actual ongoing plot before the artist and author had a falling out and it just collapsed. It was "alright" for an 00s comic that started out about video games made by people in their teens and early 20s that then became about angels and demons and monsters duking it out in South Florida for some reason. I've said a couple of times that it's one of my "Okay, where were you going with this?" webcomics that I actually wanted to know the ending to.

I was going to mention Sluggy but felt it could only lead to bad places. A friend of mine tried to get me into it back around that same time, I read the first couple of strips which were "Hi I'm a web coder slash cartoonist and these are my wacky friends" or whatever and then I flipped a few pages forward and now they're fighting dragons and aliens and succubi and all the dialogue is these walls of text of characters talking about other characters I had no knowledge of. I placed it gingerly in the "never ask questions about this" bin along with Homestuck
