Clearly I need to pick up Napoleon next, since I've heard that's even better.

Massed naval battles are dogshit though, wayyy too much micro.

I mean, I absolutely got my money's worth with Empire. Mostly because playing with artillery and gun formations was fun enough to tolerate a lot of the game's shortcomings. Letting you use dumb experimental poo poo like Puckle Guns and early rockets doesn't hurt. The novelty of having a half-global map kept it from getting forgotten too.

Napoleon and Fall of the Samurai offer way better "rectangles of men blasting eath other" battles though. Is

It comes down to your opinions on playing an already established empire IMO. If you're okay with that then it's the most fleshed out of the campaign packs by a significant margin and tries a few slightly different if not totally successful things. It's definitely worth a few play throughs I think.

Our war against free speech cannot end until we silence this bronze beast!

playing some FotS now and the battle layer is good but holy gently caress the CAI and campaign layer stuff is extremely annoying and weird

the entirety of japan seems to hate me and is at war with me and every turn tiny navies blockade and bombard my ports and some city is neverendingly rebelling despite a big garrison and PO buildings because its loyal to the shogun, so the rebels just walk around raiding every little building in my provinces. I think the whole of japan hates me because I broke a treaty 100 turns ago.

it also has the whole benny hill running after AI stacks thing going for it, just less so than warhammer.

I'm basically just having to turtle, but I don't even get to fight fun stacks they just run around raiding my farms or bombarding them with little navies. My only retaliation seems to be sending my max rank Ishin Shishi or whatever around to make all their cities rebel until they offer a peace treaty.

I also had one battle where the AI reinforcements came in on a little island that I couldn't cross to or shoot across, which was fun.

It's just from one of the early teasers from when Rome 2 was first announced, it wasn't just composed specifically for this or anything.

Back when the bit of artwork for this campaign pack was teased people on the TW forums worked out it's an Etruscan noble, which kinda points to it being an early Rome campaign pack; this kinda corroborates that. I guess we'll probably find out for sure tomorrow though.

Could also be a faction back for the Etruscans in The main campaign.

Or both. early Rome campaign that also unlocks the Etruscans in the main campaign

It's definitely a campaign pack, they said it will be.

I hope you're right about it unlocking them in the main campaign too though, that hadn't occurred to me at all. Honestly I'm pretty ambivalent about an Early Rome pack, when they were teasing it as being "unlike any of our other packs" I was hoping that meant something genuinely different like Ancient Near East or something, but playable Etruscans is a silver lining, it's always felt odd that they're unplayable, they're one of the only (maybe the only) factions left with a still mostly distinct roster but that you can't play aren't they?

It was weird that they did the desert kindgdoms first tbh, they required a lot more work than the Etruscans, who probably just need some late game units, some tech tree descriptions, and a few unique buildings to be a complete faction

The announcement is up.

The family tree is in again, and they've redone the Intrigue system, not unlike that of Attila.
There's also a patch:

quote:

-Agents skills have been completely reworked, rebalanced and are now culture-specific. They now have more actions, some of them having significant new effects
-Generals’ skills are also now culture specific
-Skill cards for agents, generals and military traditions have informative pips that show what the skill grants at each level
-Agent skills have been re-ordered to mimic the order of attributes in the character portrait
-Reinforcement range is now visible as an area, not only as blinking arrows
-Technology panels now have sounds
-In battle, ships in will now be able to leave their disembarking area by shifting in reverse, making room for more ships to land
-Champions have received a skill that directly buffs the bonus to unit experience per turn
-Levels 2 and 3 of Agent skills are now unlocked on the next agent level, instead of skipping a level. For instance, tier 1 skills are unlocked on levels 2/3/4, instead of the previous 2/4/6
-Battle loot implemented in field battles, granting different sums based on the upkeep cost of the defeated army and the action selected after victory
-Added more variety to generals in Empire Divided
-Number of household ancillaries has been increased from 1 to 3
-Number of character traits has been increased from 3 to 6

-Missile Range bonuses now actually work!
(Bunch of other bugfixes)

-Female cursus honorum grants attributes at higher levels
-GC Iceni start their campaign having military access with Dumnonii
-Starting loyalty has been decreased for all difficulty settings (0 on Easy, 0< on higher difficulty)
-The political traits Militarist and Expansionist have been nerfed, granting less loyalty
-A different version of the Family Tree, called Chain of Command, has been added to the Caesar in Gaul campaign. It contains fewer intrigues
-Start-pos characters have been rebalanced in all campaigns – many more were added, both historical and created for gameplay purposes
-New encyclopaedia page for Agents, available on right-click
-The Family Duty trait now disables character skills

There's also a bunch of visual improvements, including changes to the campaign map's lighting.

I don't plan on going back into Rome II in the near future, but this all sounds pretty good.

Edit: no info on the actual DLC yet, other than the fact it's called the Ancestors Update, and that might only be a reference to the family tree.

bunch of leaks for the campaign pack from datamining have come out too, Rome ~400 BCE seems to be almost certain; the map is a super detailed Italy.

factions are: Insubres, Iolei, Rome, Samnites, Senones, Syracuse, Taranto, Tarchuna, Veneti.

A bunch of these are Etruscan city states, right? I was disappointed they weren't a faction until I remembered they weren't actually a consolidated state.

Rome 2 has been sitting at the 5k average pop mark for years, that was the pop of Payday 2 before it exploded into f2p space. It's not a dead game by any stretch and it doesn't need as much asset work as Total Warham dlc; it's a safe investment on the side.

I'm curious if they're changing general and agent skills to be more impactful. The trait and toadies overhaul mod actually let them specialise into roles; the modded household items and characters made a noticeable difference too.
Contrast that with vanilla, a general never lived enough to unlock Group Inspire or Into the Breach so they existed to bulk up settlement defence against trash stacks (e.g clocking up 1.2k desert spear kills on a elephant).

I fired up Rome 2 to have a look and agent skills have got a pretty big rework now. Agents are more specialised and can unlock new types of sabotage when they level up, and also have many more effects when deployed (such as being able to boost research rate or steal food when deployed in enemy provinces). First time I've felt that Rome 2's agents are actually any good.

I don't feel like Shogun 2 needs any mods. I've added one that made towers deadlier, since otherwise they are too much of a non-issue. I wish there was a mod that would make ballistic archer fire less accurate. It's too easy to clown the AI otherwise.

Shogun 2 still has the annoying as hell enemy AI on campaign maps that has plagued the series since at least Empire where they refuse to commit to battle unless you drag them out. It's super tiring in a sengoku period campaign where if you don't kill the rebels in turn one they will run away and wreak havoc for five turns while you try to chase them. It makes every campaign start feel exactly the same.

And once you do pin them down you have to force them to march out during a siege, because offensive siege battles are zero fun to try and win.
