I'm trying to remember if "Fox studio audience" was a thing before Married with children. I mean, I'm sure they had them, but the specific booing, cheering, wrestle fan aesthetic they brought to the show.

Story-wise he should have been murdered right at the beginning of TPM and all of his actions afterwards should have been given to Obi-Wan. Then at least a) Obi-Wan would have something to do in the story and b) any motive inconsistencies could be attributed to Obi-Wan being over his head and making rash decisions because his training was incomplete. Qui-Gon is a cold lifeless lump that sucks the tension out of any scene that he's in.
