Well nearly four years after a friend of mine badgered me into donating to my first and last Kickstarter, Torment: Tides of Numenera will (supposedly) release on February 28th, 2017. I haven't been following the development at all so I really have no idea what to expect outside of it continuing the resurgence of isometric CRPGs.

I was so hyped up by backing Pillars of Eternity that I backed this one despite the pretty concerning lack of much concrete information ("We don't even know if it'll be RTwP or Turn-Based yet!"), pretty much entirely based on wanting a sequel to Torment. It's been so long now that I frequently forget that I even backed it, whereas Pillars and both parts of its expansion has come out AND they've made Tyranny.

I really hope it's good :ohdear:

The violence in Sleeping Dogs gets pretty nasty though. The victims will mostly deserve it, but if you're not into nasty environmental kills and bone breaking, maybe give it a miss.

A good chunk of the writing in Mad Max is kind of bad though in the sense that its really trying to be grimdark and edgy in a series that's not like that. Like Max is pretty much just your bog standard super angry grizzled white guy video game protagonist that communicates mainly through threats and angry grunts, and not a lot like Mel Gibson or Tom Hardy Max.

Chumbucket and the mystic guy are pretty nicely written as well as their relationship with Max though.

It definitely still is a good game and worth playing if you're not burned out on open world sandbox games. Sleeping Dogs is the superior game of the two though.

What exactly is the character of Tom Hardy's Max? Like, a regular guy who randomly does the Bane voice for no reason? High five.

The end sequence of Mad Max 1 is pretty drat dark, and I'd say the Mad Max game doesn't go any more grimdark than that. More bleak, maybe, which is great given the desert motif. It works that through and through. But it's only grimdark compared to like Thunderdome.

Luckily it was only $20 (or was it $15? I actually forget!) and at least a game is coming out of it. But there's a reason I never kickstarted a game before Pillars and haven't since (apart from Torment) - until I can see something concrete/finished I'm not going to put down money for it. Obsidian was fantastic in the way they broke everything down and kept up such strong lines of communication, it kind of spoiled me in that I just expected that to be the standard for how any kickstarter should be run.

He does have a character in Fury Road, he's like Mel Max in that both are kind of broken assholes but deep down they're still good people and will help when the chips are down.

Video game Max is just kind of all rear end in a top hat with very little of the selflessness that the movie Maxs had.

And when I'm referring to grimdark and the like I'm referring to stuff like how there's just flaming totems of corpses laying all over the game's wasteland to the point where's it comical.

Mad Max is one of my favorite open world games. What I don't like about it is the writing can be a little weak, there's way too much to do that going completionist is a surefire way to burn out, and one of the activity types requires you to fast travel back to base to get car with a dog who can sniff out land mines.

On the plus side, the car to car combat is fantastic, most of the little places you visit to clear out for scrap are unique, hand to hand is super brutal, the aforementioned varied environments, and they really captured the feel of driving a powerful car around. Also it has the WB Games screenshot mode which is one of my favorite things in every game it's in:

Also it's $7.50 right now on GamersGate and goes on sale all the time.

Your brain has adapted to ignore most of the headbobbing your actual body does all the time because otherwise you would get motion sick any time you walked anywhere. Throw something that looks like that in front of your actual eyes and your brain is going to go haywire. Headbobbing should not exist anywhere in video games because literally the only thing it adds is the ability to make your audience nauseous.

Owl Inspector

I enjoy headbobbing. It really never makes me feel nauseous. When you're moving around and swinging weapons around in a first person game, there are not a lot of ways to give a sense of weight or impact that don't involve moving the camera somehow.

Don't like significant headbobbing but it's not quite on the same level on my game shitlist as motion blur and depth of field.

I'm gonna be getting something off Steam for Christmas, and I'm trying to think of some games to put on my wishlist. Can I get some suggestions for looking-around type games? Games where you can just roam the game world and look at the sights? I already have Flight Simulator X and Euro Truck Simulator 2. Variety is essential; I'd rather have one well-crafted city than a procedurally generated galaxy. I'm open to games that aren't focused on sightseeing as long as it's still viable; combat's fine, for instance, as long as I'm not going to have assholes continually spawning around me while I'm trying to admire the architecture.

Some examples of games that come to mind, and how well they do:
  • Minecraft: insufficient game world variety. I can turn off monsters and hunger, but I can't turn on a reason to explore other than finding crafting resources.
  • Shadow of Mordor: a good faffing-about simulator, but not what I'm looking for here. The game world content is a bit cookie-cutter, and you can't clear any of the most interesting spots of orcs, even temporarily.
  • World of Warcraft: the MMO I've played that's had the best sense of place. I can, and have, just hung out in town and played with steam tonks, and these days it's easy to massively outlevel content in most of the world, sparing attention for sightseeing. I've seen a bunch of the map already, though, and I don't feel like paying a monthly fee.
  • Skyrim: I haven't actually played it, but maybe it'd work out. It depends on how samey the map feels and how aggressively enemies spawn.
Basically, I'm too broke to actually travel, so I'm looking for ways to get my fix virtually. Can you hook me up?

Just Cause 3 has a large and beautiful world to explore, and you get a grappling hook, parachute, and wingsuit to explore it with. You can also drive cars, boats, helicopters, and airplanes around it. The enemies in it will mostly leave you alone unless you attack someone or trespass inside a military base.

Motion blur can be used to smooth out animation frames on moving objects but that's a very localized motion blur. Motion blur can also really gently caress with the brain in a first person view because, much like headbobbing, it's something your brain has evolved to ignore. Move your eyes or head really fast and you won't see things blurring, it's something that only happens with cameras.

Though I turn off motion blur because its always seemed like a huge resource draw on the various systems I've had and dropped my frames whenever it happens.

Back again everyone, this time at night, with THE:

I told you this year was crazy for indies!! There's a whole other 50 games I didn't get to that look neat and/or cool! These games aren't ranked in the traditional sense, I'm just numbering them to show you I can count to 50, aren't you impressed!! (they're sorted alphabetically)

So that your Pentium II Netscape Navigator browsers dont crash I wont overload you with Youtubes or gifs for every game, I'll just do em for the lesser knowns. On with the second list!

1. Anarcute - $14.99 (Sale Price: $11.24)
Store Page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/390720/
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CpJX4vZMjT0
Rise up against tyranny with cute fluffy animals! Anarcute is a Pikmin-style game where you form a larger and larger mob to riot and overthrow cities!

2. Anima Gate of Memories - $19.99 ($14.99)
Store Page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/380750/
Third-person action RPG that kind of looks like it came out of that PS2 era of me-too DMC clones that were hardly original but still fun. Apparently based on a pen and paper IP?

3. Ara Fell - $9.99 ($4.99)
Store Page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/440540/
The other big RPG Maker release this year. I don't think Ara Fall has a whole lot of brand new art assets but it uses the existing art pretty well and has a nice combat engine. I haven't played it for very long, however. Other people in this thread have recommended it though.

3. Beglitched - $9.99 (Sale Price TBD)
Store Page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/461220/

Match 3 + Minesweeper + Hacking. Has really cute art!

4. Creepy Castle - $14.99 (Sale Price TBD)
Store Page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/450440/

Sidescrolling RPG with multiple campaigns, music by RushJet1 (they're awesome), Mario & Luigi inspired minigame combat.

5. Deadbolt - $9.99 (Sale Price TBD)
Store Page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/394970/
The only stealth action game where you can attack someone through a toilet.

6. Dead Secret - $14.99 ($7.49)
Store Page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/402260/
First person spooky mystery game. As someone who has become a fan of shesellssheshells videos, I must admit I've become very enchanted by possibly-mediocre first person spookers. But that's okay because sometimes trash is fun.

7. Devil Daggers - $4.99 ($2.99)
Store Page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/422970/
The ultimate score attack game, how long can you last??

9. Diaries of a Spaceport Janitor - $9.99 ($7.49)
Store Page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/436500/
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jOJxAzpdWS8
You're not the hero in this game, just a lowly janitor, in a world where adventure is being had; just not by you. Items at shops are eternally out of your price range. But you still live. What intrigues me the most about this game, besides the premise, is its funky, PS1-style low-poly aesthetic and color theory.

10. Enter the Gungeon - $14.99 ($7.49)
Store Page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/311690/
It's a game that has polarized people, who either love it or think it's broken. But if you've read my list, you know I can't turn down a twin-stick shooter. I just can't.

11. Firewatch - $19.99 ($11.99)
Store Page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/383870/
While not everyone loves the story of the game, no one can deny it looks great, and will keep you invested for most of the game. I definitely still want it.

12. Furi - $19.99 ($14.99)
Store Page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/423230/
Stylish action game with fast combat and a tremendous skill-ceiling difficulty.

13. The Gate of Firmament - $14.99 (Sale Price TBD)
Store Page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/427030/
Chinese RPG that came out early this year, it had a lot of attention in the Steam thread in a while but has fallen back under the radar so I'm giving it another bump.

14. Ghost 1.0 - $12.99 ($9.74)
Store Page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/463270/

Despite being made by the same team as Unepic, apparently Ghost 1.0 is actually very good. I'm skeptical, but everyone deserves a second chance.

15. Gonner - $9.99 (Sale Price TBD)
Store Page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/437570/
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6vFYz4fRdIs
Platforming action roguelite that has been compared to Downwell.

16. Heart & Slash - $14.99 ($11.24)
Store Page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/326840/
A 3D brawler roguelike that looks kinda like Megaman Legends a little bit???

17. Hive Jump - $14.99 (Sale unlikely)
Store Page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/295670/
1-4 player action game where you hunt down aliens in procedurally generated alien hives. Comes out of Early Access next month it would seem!

18. Hue - $14.99 ($7.49)

Store Page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/383270/
Puzzle platformer with awesome graphic design with a Runbow-esque color-swapping aesthetic where platforms that blend into the background color disappear.

19. Hyper Light Drifter - $19.99 ($11.99)
Store Page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/257850/
Another polarizing game but I feel compelled to list this game regardless. Some people do really dig it, but it's clearly not for everyone.

20. I am Setsuna - $39.99 ($26.79)
Store Page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/441830/
The other indie 3D JRPG this year, actually coming from Japan unlike Earthlock. Some complaints are that it's a tad dull. Since I haven't played it, I can't really measure.

21. Icey - $10.99 (Sale Price TBD)
Store Page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/553640/
Sidescrolling hack and slaction with The Stanley Parable/Bastion-style commentary.

22. In Case of Emergency Release Raptor - Free
Store Page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/471770/

Oh, Arcen Games. They can just never catch a break. Press for this game was so bad that they decided to refund everyone, cancel the game mid-production, and give what's available to everyone for free. You're a raptor and you destroy poo poo.

23. Kelvin and the Infamous Machine - $14.99 ($8.99)
Store Page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/376520/
Point n click adventure game where you time travel, Sherman and Peabody style, to help out historical figures like Beethoven and un-gently caress history.

24. Magnetta - $9.99 ($6.99)
Store Page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/485750/

In the wake of Mighty No 9 being awful, Megaman clones are all the rage. Giga Girl was one, 20XX is a roguelike take, and here's another conventional clone.

25. Metrico+ - $13.99 ($9.79)
Store Page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/373990/

Platforming meets charts and spreadsheets. If this isn't in that dude's spreadsheet month of games he should stop right now.

26. Momodora 4 - $9.99 ($6.99)
Store Page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/428550/
Considered the best in the Momodora series and a big step up from Momodora 3 (the one I played). Has been shown at GDQ as well, apparently quite difficult and demanding!

27. N++ - $14.99 ($11.24)
Store Page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/230270/
If you at all followed indie games in the 2000s, you know N. You may even know N+ when it was on the Nintendo DS. N++ is The Ultimate N, with content that will probably take you an entire lifetime to finish. The two "stranded on an island" games: Everyday SquareLogic and N++.

28. Nelly Cootalot: The Fowl Fleet - $19.99 ($11.99)
Store Page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/317320/
The first Nelly Cootalot was a cute freeware point and click adventure and the sequel has a new engine, new art, and I assume is even better as a game.

29. NeonXSZ - $14.99 ($7.49)
Store Page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/296010/
While I wait endlessly for Descent Underground to add a single player campaign (it's just not happening at this point, I'm convinced), other games have to fill the 6DOF void. NeonSXZ is this year's entry.

30. Obduction - $29.99 (Sale Price TBD)
Store Page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/306760/
The first game from Myst-developer Cyan in years, Obduction has been well received and places highly amongst other first-person puzzlers and walkers.

31. Okhlos - $12.99 ($6.49)
Store Page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/400180/

Between Okhlos, Anarcute, and Kick rear end Commandos, the "growing mob of people" genre has been firmly covered this year.

32. Owlboy - $24.99 (Sale Price TBD)
Store Page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/115800/
Seemingly three hundred years in the making, Owlboy is out to critical acclaim. I remember playing the demo for Owlboy back in, what, 2010? 2011? It's been a long time.

33. Pan-Pan - $12.99 (Sale Price TBD)
Store Page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/471920/

Gorgeous looking indie puzzler remnisicent of Monument Valley or Lumino City.

34. Pavilion - $9.99 (Sale Price TBD)
Store Page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/417150/

A puzzler with beautiful artwork where you control the environment rather than the character.

35. Puzzle Blocks - $9.99 ($6.69)
Store Page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/501450/
Early Access title, but look. It's Picross 3D, in VR, on PC. How can I not bring this up.

36. Rabi-Ribi - $17.99 ($12.95)
Store Page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/400910/
Most people's Metroidvania of the Year, an anime explosion of bunny girl action in a giant, non-linear open world. Oddly, not the first bunny girl Metroidvaia (Bunny Must Die)

37. Recursed - $9.99 (Sale Price TBD)
Store Page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/497780/

This one just popped up on people's radar this week. Honestly the concept of it breaks my brain a little, I'd need to play it to understand what's going on.

38. Rising Islands - $9.99 ($7.49)
Store Page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/452450/
Third-person parkour platformer with what looks like Outland/Ikaruga's red/blue color swapping.

39. Sally's Law - $3.99 ($1.99)
Store Page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/512230/
Story game that will probably make you cry or something.

40. Samorost 3 - $19.99 ($9.99)
Store Page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/421120/
The kings of artsy puzzleventures returns with another Samorost game, with more weird worlds to figure out how they work by clicking everywhere.

41. Sherlock Holmes: The Devil's Daughter - $50 (Sale Price TBD)
Store Page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/350640/
It seems that TDD is one of the weaker Frogwares games but it's also possibly the last Sherlock game from Frogwares so let's stand in rememberance.

42. Shu - $11.99 (Sale Price TBD) [demo available]
Store Page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/528720/

I wasn't quite sold on the demo but it seems potentially interesting, a 2.5D platformer where you're multiple characters all onscreen at once.

43. The Solus Project - $19.99 ($9.99)
Store Page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/313630/
Story-focused first-person exploration game by the makers of The Ball, with mild survival stuff.

44. Sorcery - $9.99 each ($4.99)
Store Page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/411000/
The gamebooks have been received very well, I have one on Android but I just haven't gotten around to it yet. I know this is good!

45. Stephen's Sausage Roll - $29.99 (Sale Price TBD)
Store Page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/353540/
The main thing scaring people off of this is the price, but a lot of people have said this is a brilliant puzzle game, and even Jonathan Blow has endorsed it (not that he's a tastemaker but..)

46. Stories: The Path of Destinies - $14.99 ($10.04)
Store Page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/439190/
Action-RPG with a fun personality and branching paths; apparently the combat is repetitive.

47. SuperHOT - $24.99 ($16.99)
Store Page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/322500/
I don't really have to explain this one at this point, do I?

48. Thumper - $19.99 (Sale Price TBD)
Store Page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/356400/
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gtPGX8i1Eaw
People say this game makes VR worth it, but since it can be played without VR, I would probably do just that. Like Audiosurf but more action oriented and far more intense.

49. Tyranny - $44.99 (Sale Price TBD)
Store Page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/362960/
Obsidian's latest RPG, which no doubt has the same pros and cons as past Obsidian games. In this one you're on the side of evil!

50. The Witness - $39.99 ($23.99)
Store Page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/210970/

Thanks QFGII for the reviews and the roundup. I hadn't realized until you mentioned it that Inside had a demo. I've been wanting to try that one for a long time, but I didn't think my decrepit laptop would be up to it. Well, lo and behold, it handled the demo without anything more than very minor hitching here and there. Demo scratches the itch for me too, big time. Does anyone know if the demo is fairly representative of the rest of the game in terms of graphics processing requirements? If there won't be any sections later on that savage my framerate then I'll probably grab that as soon as the sale hits.

I have a problem with the iOS Steam APP and I was wondering if anyone here could help.

I tried to log in and after it asks for my user name and password, it asks for the confirmation code (from the same app...). I put the code but it says it's the wrong one, so I try again with the same result (I did not put the wrong code btw). I can't log in because it doesn't accept the code and when I try the "send me the code by mail" option it says that the steam servers are too busy and try again. Same when I try to contact steam support.

Anyone knows what I can do? Thanks in advance!

Haha, so her outfit was changed 10 years ago and people are just freaking out now? Wonderful. Amazing.

Mad Max is a cool game even if the story is garbage and some of the open worldy stuff get repetitive. My biggest beef with it is that Mad Max got all of the love and polish and Just Cause 3 was shunted off to some B team and turned out poo poo.

Thanks so much for this little review series, and thanks to you other weirdos that do them too!
I don't get nearly enough time to play games, so I mostly just read about them while pooping, so I really appreciate that you and the other reviewers put the time into playing the games, AND writing about them.

I really really hope to get my strategy reviews back on track this week. The last few weeks have been rather rough in my life.

Sand box planetary exploration game. Looks pretty fun from the videos i've seen. But it comes out 12-16-16. And i'm still curious what it will cost.

From an announcement I saw a couple days ago I believe it's going to be $19.99.

Forward to the Sky was really bad so even the low expectations that come from being a battle panty game will likely not be met.

For that I may pick it up. It looks decent but so did NMS.
