We should Always try to maintain some level of discipline. That's how Bright Noa does things, after all. And when he doesn't, you get ZZ Gundam and Beecha. And nobody wants Beecha.

B. Because on the other hand, all the Ryder pilots we're picking up are effectively just mercenaries who we're not even paying, and did not sign some contract to join the Ceran Armed Forces. Keeping them happy by giving them some freedom from the standard regulations, so they don't decide to just leave, probably isn't the worst idea. TheGreatEvilKing posted:I thought Ava was supposed to be a grown woman? Ages aren't given for any of them. By various comments you can kind of infer they're probably all somewhere in their 20s, or near enough at the very least, but that's just guesswork. Stuff like Icari being an experienced mercenary who's been doing so for years, or Asaga meeting Chigara a specific 5 years ago, and the like. Even if you're going by Gundam starting ages, that still puts them at a minimum of 15 in the past (ignoring Uso, who's somewhat nonsensical even by UC standards).

Episode 5: Medical Emergence Part 1: Crew Check I've been meaning to use this tea set. There you go. Fresh out of the box. I didn't know you were into tea. Heh, I'm not nearly sophisticated enough. It was a little going away gift from my family for my commission. ... Reminds me of the old times, when we used to play cards in the student council room. I'm surprised you even remember. It's been so many years since then. I guess seeing you again made me nostalgic. You know, you haven't really changed much since those days. Well, things are different now, captain. Back then, you were the one following me. Someone had to keep you out of trouble. Of course. You were always trying to solve other people's problems. It was only a matter of time until you hurt yourself. Heh. Alright, I won't deny that. Remember your campaign slogan? Something about being the duty of the student council president to solve the student body's troubles? I guess ... Things were simpler back then. You're right. I did try too hard. And in the end, I just left disappointed. Disappointed? You never told me that. Heh. But people don't like change. Those that stand out are just naturally made the target of scorn. And despite everything I did, I was forgotten, just like all the class presidents before me. (Ava’s actually kind of a bummer to hang out with, tbh) You were always in motion, getting things done. Honestly I guess I was a bit in awe. Maybe I wanted to watch you and learn from the best. It's strange, hearing you say that now. Do you ever think about what it'd be like if you sat in the captain's seat instead? ... No. I'm your first officer. There's nothing more to it than that. I'll execute your orders, captain. That's all there is to it. ... Hahahaha. What? What's so funny? I thought the problems I had back then were insurmountable. And now, here we are, one ship against PACT. Kind of makes our high school problems seem like a joke, doesn't it? Hah. Well, we were just kids. I'm sure back then, our problems were as big as the veniczar himself. What do you mean? We're not in high school any more. It's a war out there. Compassion may mean death on the battlefield. As captain, you'll have to put all of us in danger. You can't let your personal feelings interfere with what needs to be done. As captain, it's my job to keep all of you safe. I wouldn't be able to do that unless I considered my feelings. Alright. It's your ship. It's just something to keep in mind, that's all. ... PACT will pay for what they've done to our home. To tell the truth, I'd rather not think about it. All the people we've lost. All the memories destroyed. ... I'm sorry. Pretty much the whole crew's lost someone close to them. We have to stop PACT, so that what happened on Cera will never happen again. Understood, sir. I'll be right behind you every step of the way. Right. Give me your thoughts on the crew. Asaga's been stirring up every sort of trouble you could imagine. I caught her gambling with the crew just the other day. Oh come on, what's wrong with a little game of cards now and then? Try to loosen up a bit, Ava. Our pilots need to blow off some steam now and then. Well, if that's your order. No, Ava … You know that military protocol doesn't mean much now that Cera's a PACT colony. I don’t think protocol for the situation we're in now even exists. That is unfortunate. However, someone must enforce discipline on this ship. All right … Just don't push yourself too hard, alright? Relax every now and then. Understood, captain. (She still totally doesn't get what I mean …) How's Chigara been doing? Sounds good. How about our mercenary? She’s doing better than I thought she would. She's been helping us fix the bugs in our security systems. Maybe I was wrong about her. Good to hear. Well, Thanks for the chat. I should get back to work. As should I. We should have these talks more often. I could put my tea set to use. Speaking of our new mercenary … How are you adjusting to the Sunrider? I'm satisfied with my current accommodations. It's much better than what I'm used to. Thanks for your concern. Your ryder was smashed up pretty badly last time. Is it operable? Not without a bunch of repairs. Your pilot was pretty thorough about taking it down. You're lucky you didn't get spaced. Asaga may look silly, but she's pretty dangerous with a ryder. Heh. That so? I wouldn't mind having a rematch. On the simulator, of course, captain. Thankfully, your girl in engineering managed to fix most of the damage. She's really something. I've never seen someone as talented as her. We're lucky to have her on our team. … Tsch. I can't believe I said that out loud. So what exactly did you do as a mercenary, Icari? Blew up a couple refueling stations here and there. Jumped some crippled warships. Even impersonated a low-level PACT veniczar once. I can't really imagine you as a veniczar. I had to put on a special latex suit to make myself look 80 pounds fatter. Haha. Uh, wow. So what exactly were you doing? Busting up a slaver operation. The Alliance hired me to crash a transaction between a pirate cell and this PACT veniczar. PACT's been ... Ah, liberating slaves by paying off their slavers. In exchange for serving as personnel on their ships, of course. This was going to be one of the biggest sales ever. Nearly 200 adults. The Alliance got involved when PACT accidentally included one of their citizens in the sale. I guess they forgot to check their passports or something. So you just impersonated the veniczar to pay the pirates off and free the slaves after? Tsch. If only if it were simple. You see, the cheapskates at the Alliance were only willing to pay to free their own citizen. Something about not wanting to fund piracy. Anyways, that was all irrelevant, since it was a double cross and the pirates were planning to slit the veniczar's throat after they got the money anyways. Got grazed by a couple of their shots, which melted through my latex suit. That was a sight to see. I bet ... So how did you get out of that alive? I swapped places with the real veniczar just as she arrived. Haha, you should have seen the look on her face as the pirates grabbed her. Meanwhile, all the slaves got loose. It was total pandemonium in there. Finally, the pirates just opened fire on the PACT liner, spacing everyone on board. I don't know what happened to the slaves. I managed to get the Alliance citizen out of there though, and in the end, that's all that mattered to my clients. That's pretty crazy. I can't believe you made it out of that in one piece. Still, it’s a pity you couldn’t save the slaves in the end. I still took down a veniczar and a PACT star liner, so I'd call it a good day. … So I noticed you like swords. Now that shields can deflect small arms fire, the only way to take someone down in to draw your sword and get up close and personal with them. Have you ever killed someone with your sword in person? Couple of PACT soldiers and pirates. When they pop up personal shielding, it's the best way to take them down. I’ll … keep that in mind. Heh. Real world's different from officer school, captain. A lot less clean. It gets the job done, that's for sure. … I can still remember most of their faces. It definitely makes you think about what you're doing more than pressing a button and firing a laser at an enemy spaceship. They were armed enemies and it was either their lives or mine. Right. … Well this has been … I need to get going. How are you adjusting to the Sunrider, Asaga? Uuu ... I really wish the first officer would stop chewing me out though … First I tried to hook up my Game Master to the holovision in the lounge. Ugh, you won't imagine how red her face was when she told me off for that. Something about contaminating the ship's electronics. And then, I tried playing some Duel Creatures with Chigara in the crew quarters. And then she comes marching in, saying no card games. Bleh ... I've already spoken to Ava about it. She won't be giving you any more trouble. Really? Ahaha, you're the best, capt'n! Just try to keep it in moderation, alright? Understood. I’ve been meaning to ask, but what are your thoughts about what happened with Icari? I'm not so sure about having a person like that on our team. Nobody should shoot at civilians. Icari had her reasons. It's not always so black and white, Asaga. And in the end, she didn’t. I guess … I just hope something like that doesn't ever happen again. I should go. Try to stay out of trouble, Asaga. No promises. One last person to talk to ... E-eah! Oh, sorry captain, I didn't see you coming there! Sorry. You really get focused on your work, huh? Whenever I'm working on something, I tend to lose awareness of everything else … Was there something you needed, captain? Just checking in. The Sunrider's a wonderful vessel. In fact, I don't think I've ever been on a ship as advanced in my life. I was just running some energy conversion models the other day and I can say that the Sunrider's core drive is one of the most efficient in the galaxy. Since the Sunrider's powered through atomic fusion, we don't have to worry about radiation management. Now, I think if I were to upgrade the fuel feeder with ... C-can you please repeat your question? Calm down, Chigara. I was just asking how you were doing. O-oh! Everything's good actually! The first officer's helped me move in all of my things. I even managed to improve the research lab here in engineering too. I'm glad to hear that. So, what do you think about what happened with Icari? I haven't really spoken with her much since, but I think she regrets what she did. I hope we can work together to stop PACT. Well keep up the good work, Chigara. I'll talk to you later. Next time … something actually happens! (Actually I always really like the parts of games where you’re just running around talking to your party/crew)

Not wanting foreign electronics hooked up to your hardwired ones is fairly reasonable (though you'd hope one in the lounge, and presumably nonessential, isn't actually linked to anything important), but trying to enforce gambling regs on your actual pilots (let alone volunteers) in wartime is certainly something.

Enforcement of gambling regs is usually a bit of protocol theatre, any officer would nominally enforce it, it’s more a question of if they actually mean it. Sadly, Ava definitely means it.

Part 2: History Lesson Ryuvia? You mean we've been contacted by royalty? Correct. Ryuvia's one of the oldest nations in the galaxy, with a history going back over 10,000 years. In fact, some historians say that Ryuvia might even have been the birthplace of humanity. Let's hear what they've got to say, then. Put them through. Greetings, your highness. I'm Captain Kayto Shields of the CSFS Sunrider. This is my first officer, Ava Crescentia. I have heard of your deeds in the Neutral Rim, and believe you may be of help. There is a treasure known to our people which we seek to retrieve from the Nomodorn Corridor. Perform well, and we shall bestow you with great riches. What are you looking for? The crown jewel of Ryuvia. The crown jewel? I presume it's of value? The kingdom of Ryuvia holds many secrets, captain. You have our request. I shall be waiting. Well, maybe this might shed some light on the matter. What? There’s a rumor going around that the Ryuvian princess has gone missing. Missing? And what's the crown jewel have to do with that? I wrote my dissertation on Ryuvian treasures at the Academy. According to my research, the crown jewel isn't a carved gem, but rather a highly advanced crystalline device which can pinpoint the location of people with royal blood across astronomical distances. Ah ... so I’m guessing the Ryuvians want this crown jewel to help find their princess? That's the best explanation I can think of. Give me the background on King Jaylor and the Ryuvians. A long time ago, the Ryuvian Empire stretched across the galaxy. It was a vast and mighty empire, where culture and the sciences flourished. The formation of the Solar Alliance further degraded Ryuvia's power, and today all that is left of its former glory is the planet of Ryuvia. You can still find pieces of their former empire scattered throughout the galaxy though. Many archeologists and explorers seek Ryuvian treasures which may hold the secret to unlocking the power of their lost technology. It’s that valuable? The Ryuvian Empire conquered the entire galaxy using technology we cannot even conceive of today. When their empire collapsed, much of their technology was lost in the ensuing chaos. We've been trying to catch up to the Ryuvian's level of technology ever since, but we’re still decades away from having anything close to what the ancient Ryuvians did. The pieces of technology left by the ancient Ryuvians are called Lost Technology. Whenever an artifact is found, it can dramatically change the power balance of the galaxy. Why would the Ryuvians need to invent a device to detect royals in the first place? The crown jewel of Ryuvia was made to detect royal blood with the utmost precision. You could even say the fate of the galaxy depended upon its accuracy. Much of what we've dug up of the ancient Ryuvian's technology escapes comprehension though. Some of the details of the device may never be understood. Well, since we could use the money, we might as well help the Ryuvians get their crown jewel back. What do you say? Understood, captain. Before we make the jump, I put some funds into boosting the Sunrider’s energy core and kinetic accuracy. Warp successful, captain. We have arrived at the Nomodorn Corridor. This is going to be like trying to find a needle in a haystack. Any ideas where we should start looking? Nothing we need to worry about though. The Tautenian space force is... kind of a joke. Right. Keep our pilots on alert though. I want to be prepared for anything. Aye sir. Battle stations! Raise shields and power weapons! Ready all ryders for combat! All hands, battle stations, battle stations, battle stations. Set condition one throughout the ship. This is not a drill. Repeat: this is not a drill. We're all ready down here, capt'n! Wait a minute … I’m reading a distress beacon from another ship. A Tautenian ship? No, it's Alliance. Civilian signature, designation Mochi. Possibly a transport vessel being targeted by the pirates. Looks like this just turned into a rescue mission. Patch me through to our pilots. Done. Asaga, looks like it'll be a rescue mission this time. The pirates are targeting a civilian transport. The Sunrider will be vulnerable without our ryders. What are your orders, captain? Choose one: A: That's a risk that we'll have to take. I want all our ryders to go forward and save the civilian vessel. B: The safety of the Sunrider comes first. Our ryders will stay back and escort us.

Part 3: The Doctor is In The Sunrider will be vulnerable without our ryders. What are your orders, captain? That's a risk that we'll have to take. I want all our ryders to go forward and save the civilian vessel. Understood, captain. Our old friend Cosette Cosmos might be out there. Watch your tail, everyone. All units, launch! Ah, my favorite space pirate. I see you've still been skimping on the milk. G-gurk! Y-you've interfered with my plans for the last time! Kill them! We’re up against another pretty standard pirate fleet, but we’ve got something new this time. The Phoenix does one thing, but it does that one thing very well. It hasn’t come up before now, but if you move a unit into a hex directly next to another unit, they get a free attack on you. The Phoenix, however, has an ability that negates that. The Phoenix moves fast enough, and has a high enough evasion score, that it’s a perfectly viable strategy to keep her inside your shield/flak bubble until an enemy ryder gets too close, and then dart out, cut it up, and dart back into cover. Finally, the Phoenix is one of the few ryders with its own flak, so when it’s not performing as an interceptor, with a few upgrades it can serve as a pretty effective anti-missile platform. These guys are still flying around without shields. I teach them the error of their ways. Like so. Told ‘ya. This is exactly where you want the Phoenix to be. Also I learned this time that the Havoc’s melee attack doesn’t work when you’re next to them; it has to be one hex away to use it. Strange. Either way, Cosette misses Icari. Working for the big bad now, huh? Birds of a feather … Captain Kayto Shields, of the CSFS Sunrider. Perhaps you’ve heard of me? Bah! No matter! You are no match for I, the glorious Veniczar B. Cullen! I will rid the Neutral Rim of vermin like you and unify these poverty stricken worlds into our new galactic order! And where does the orbital bombing of millions of innocents fit into this unity of yours? Pah! The likes of you will never understand the necessities of war! Now en garde, captain! Allow me to show you the true power of PACT! Cullen is not the most nuanced of villains. (Looks like Veniczar Porkchops means business. We're heavily outnumbered now ... Should we fall back?) Weird? A sudden spike in power usage ... Something inside it is coming online … I guess it's time to get moving, huh? Captain, a ryder! Hidden inside the storage compartment in the Alliance vessel! Patch me through to her. This is Captain Kayto Shields of the CSFS Sunrider to the unidentified Alliance ryder. State your intentions. (An extra ryder. This should even the odds.) All right, Claude. The Sunrider is at your service. Let's get these bogies off of you. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that this is the next new crewmember we get, so let’s take a quick look at her ryder, the Bianca. Like the Liberty, the Bianca is a support ryder. Right now it doesn’t have a shield bubble like Chigara does, but we’ll soon be rectifying that. Between an upgraded Sunrider, Liberty, and Bianca, you can have units under triple shielding, which pretty much makes them immune to laser attacks. Where the Liberty focuses on buffing or debuffing defenses, the Bianca does the same for offense. She also has this, which lets her spend energy to move an enemy ryder. Why would that be useful? Well, remember what I said about moving units into hexes next to enemies? This is pretty situational, though. Where this strategy really shines is when you either pull an enemy ryder outside of a shield bubble and laser it to death, or pull it close enough so that Icari can fly out and cut them in half. Anyway, Icari cuts through the remaining pirate ryders and we laser a cruiser into oblivion after Chigara shuts their shields off. Wait, what? Oh, I didn’t look at the entire map. Oops. Not that it really matters. With the PACT cruisers down there aren’t any shielded units, so after Icari drives off the Havoc, we mop up the rest with lasers. Looks like today's not your day, Veniczar Porkchops. T-tsch ... How dare you! I will not stand for this mockery! Mark my words ... You will regret crossing me, captain! I'm truly shaking in my boots. Good. Let them go for now. Aye sir. Let's bring our new friend on board. Welcome aboard the Sunrider. Oooaaahh … Ugh ... another weirdo. Yeah, sorry everyone, now this is happening. We’ve already got the energetic one, the shy one, and the tsundere one … now we get the slutty one. What were you doing out here alone? This area of space is dangerous. I was just delivering some medical supplies to a clinic on Tautenia when I was stopped by those pirates. I imagine I would have been killed had you not arrived in time. Looks like I'm in your debt now, captain. Medical supplies? But you don't look like a freighter pilot ... Oh, no, no. I'm a doctor. A doctor, huh? Well, that makes more sense. Well, uh, aside from the ryder piloting part. Eh-heh ... You pick strange skills like that up when you've stayed in the Neutral Rim too long. Well then, we'll just drop you off at Tautenia and you can take a shuttle to the surface. Glad we could be of help. Oh, no, captain! I couldn't possibly leave without first repaying my debt. Eh-heh ... not to mention it'd be a shame to leave a total hottie behind so soon … What's that? Oh, nothing, captain! Say ... I don't suppose you need a doctor on board this ship? Actually, we do! Our sickbay's been closed ever since we've left Cera without our doctor! Haha, what good luck! Hey Ava, we finally have a doctor for our ship! Oh captain! I'm so glad we could meet! Nah, I'm glad you're here to help. Haha, I was getting worried about the sickbay! Uu-uwah ... Chigara, I think you've met quite a formidable rival here ... M-me? E-eh? Later … Is there an issue? I've been looking into our new “doctor.” The only problem is that I can't find her medical license on the Alliance Medical Association's database. Strange. Maybe she's licensed with a different medical organization? Possibly. Despite the AMA being the most reputable, many neutral planets run their own medical licensing programs. But I've checked through all of the major neutral medical databases and she's nowhere to be found. … weird ... Well, keep up the search, Ava. She's gotta be licensed with someone. Wouldn't it be better to just ask, captain? Oh right, I suppose I could do that. Really? Really. ... I should go. It's time for your medical exam! Okay ... I hear you've operated this ship without a doctor for nearly a month! Now that simply will not do! Let's just say we didn't have much of a choice. Well, time to unbutton your shirt ~ O-oohh.... Uh, is something the matter, doc? You're staring pretty intensely here ... O-oh? N-no! Absolutely nothing wrong! I'll just feel up your ribs, make sure nothing misplaced! Haha! Hah! Say... you are a doctor, aren't you? What do you mean, captain? Of course I'm a doctor! Uh ... Y-you wouldn't happen to have a certificate, do you? Of course I do! Unfortunately, it was on the Mochi when the pirates got to it. I-is that ... REALLY!? W-WHAT ARE YOU DOING!? HURK! A-Ava!? I found it! F-found what!? That little skeever isn't a doctor at all! Look here on this bulletin! Medical license suspended due to malpractice. WARNING: This individual is known to masquerade as a medical practitioner. Her skills fall below all reasonable standards of modern medical care. Patients are advised to seek the advice of a professional medical practitioner instead of this individual. I-I knew it! Orders, captain!? F-fire vanguards! ... ... ... I mean, get me my clothes damnit! You're under arrest! . F-for what? For impersonating a doctor! (And molesting a starship captain!) H-EH!? C-c-c-c-captain!? *thump* C-Chigaraaa...! Send a transmission to the Alliance. We'll just turn her over to the authorities. Sniff... sniff... ... Y-you wouldn't do that to ol' Claude now, captain, would you? I was just trying to help! I didn't mean any harm by it. Whenever I see someone in need, I just can't stop myself from trying to help ... Hmph. (This girl's good, I'll give her that. But she's not going to fool me twice.) We're here on serious business for the Ryuvian throne. A warship is no place to fool around, Claude. (Damnit! I accidently let slip what we were here for. That was careless.) The Mnemosyne Abyss? What do you know about it? It's pretty well known among the locals on Tautenia as the site of an ancient Ryuvian battle. Thousands of derelict ships litter the area. It’s largely unexplored, so many hidden treasures still remain there. (Hidden treasures? This sounds like a possible lead on the Crown Jewel ...) What do you think, captain? It's the best we have right now. It's worth investigating. We'll set course for the Mnemosyne Abyss. And what of our “doctor?” Looks like we'll have to delay turning her over to the authorities. Choose one: A: She'll be confined to quarters in the meantime until we're finished with our mission. B: Get her to the hangar. She'll be more useful as a pilot than a doctor.
