Grapplejack posted:Do most places even have the infrastructure for 5g? I know the US has extremely limited fiber and I assume most of the world is in a similar boat. 5G will increase the capacity over existing LTE cells by about 10%, it's useful even at lower frequencies. Higher frequencies (the thing that's actually capable of delivering significantly increased bandwidths) are where very local fiber roll out is necessary. It's also not going to be feasible outside of very urban areas, as signal attenuation is a huge problem.

watch something culturally relevant instead, like 苏州河. China might have gotten rich but its movies have only gotten shittier since the 80s

CAPS LOCK BROKEN posted:watch something culturally relevant instead, like 苏州河. China might have gotten rich but its movies have only gotten shittier since the 80s Lou Ye is one of the best directors in China right now, and his best film is Summer Palace quote:The film deals with a young student played by Hao Lei who leaves her small hometown to study at the fictional "Beiqing University" (a homage to Peking University). There she meets a fellow student and begins an intense romantic relationship in the backdrop of the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989. The film also follows the eventual disillusionment of these young idealists after the crackdown, as the years progress through the 1990s and into the 2000s (decade). Suzhou river is the one westerners like, I'm not sure how it happened - I guess it made it to a lot of western film festivals. Blind Massage is also amazing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tbzblq3b1Z8 The one he did last year starts strong but gets extremely overwrought by the end edit: goddamn blind massage has a scene where three or four coworkers are hanging out in their dorm room at the massage parlor, two are married and moved from their village to work there. One of the other workers is always told by seeing-people that he's handsome and the wife keeps trying to grab his dick, even while having a conversation with her husband, but because everyone is blind, it's not clear what's happening but everyone can feel tension, all while all four are sitting on bunks in a cramped room chatting. It's so intensely uncomfortable, in a film where blind people call the seeing "gods" and you, the viewer have to be privy to inner thoughts just by seeing what the blind can't. As far as I can tell it cannot and hasn't been shown in China and the director was forbidden to make movies for 5 years when he took it to Cannes. So there is that. Unfortunately the DVD seems to be difficult to get, it sounds very good.

I agree, there needs to be legislation that severely limits the data that companies can acquire, even if they 'anonymize' it.

The principal difference between Chinese and foreign social credit scores is that the Chinese one has a formal statement of intent. That's pretty much it.

I have been thinking, Winnie the pooh is one of the nicest, gentlest symbol you can use to make fun of Xi Jinping. I mean if you try to find a nicer icon you wouldn't be able to find one. CCP should steal the meme and use it to sell China. Imagine a China tourism bureau ad paster with the usual landmark montage and end with a yellow bear icon and a fancy "come visit China" caligraphy.

It's typical white racism to literally call him a yellow skinned bear, and pooh is not banned in the PRC. Westerners will believe anything about asian people from their own media.
