The ZIllow search term of the day is "mural" Has there been, like, research or study of the whole vernacular vaguely-Orientalist landscape murals in (usually) dining rooms of old houses thing? The similarity among them can't be a coincidence. I know the Arts & Crafts folks did a lot of this but it doesn't seem limited to a particular region or style of house. https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/1425-E-Welsh-Rd-Maple-Glen-PA-19002/10030491_zpid/ https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/36-Oliver-St-Petersham-MA-01366/57632865_zpid/ https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/74-Sinclair-Hill-Rd-New-Hampton-NH-03256/126556309_zpid/ https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/5718-London-Rd-Duluth-MN-55804/61527848_zpid/ https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/3145-Russell-Blvd-Saint-Louis-MO-63104/2937539_zpid/ Just lmao that the realtor called this house a Victorian https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/301-Lincoln-Ave-Cadiz-OH-43907/118461256_zpid/ Also definitely not a Victorian, jesus christ https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/2040-Jefferson-Dr-Pasadena-CA-91104/20920923_zpid/?Just a cute little mural in a cute little kitchen in a cute little California bungalow https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/623-E-Court-St-Janesville-WI-53545/89130787_zpid/ I just think this one is really charming You can fire up Google maps of Janesville, WI and try to find which of these other buildings still exist!

Youth Decay posted:The ZIllow search term of the day is "mural" Well the examples you posted look mostly like Romantic landscapes rather than anything Orientalist. But you're probably seeing a lot of Chinoiserie, which is a Western take on Asian, and Chinese in particular, style that came along in the 18th century when trade with East Asia increased. It's related to baroque and rococo styles in particular, which makes it one of those things people will pull out when they want to look rich. The Arts & Crafts folk, on the other hand, were inspired by the opening of Japan, which brought about a whole new wave of interest in East Asian style and Japanese style in particular, but it didn't have the wealth-on-display connotations.
