wow such an open layout

It's crappy construction because besides being ugly and inhospitable it has to be ungodly expensive to heat in the winter.

Crossposting from crappy construction thread because we were talking up brutalism earlier, and this is it's terrible post-modern descendant.

The ZIllow search term of the day is "mural"
Has there been, like, research or study of the whole vernacular vaguely-Orientalist landscape murals in (usually) dining rooms of old houses thing? The similarity among them can't be a coincidence. I know the Arts & Crafts folks did a lot of this but it doesn't seem limited to a particular region or style of house.

China has been exporting painted silk wall paper since the 1700s. I'm sure there's still a lot of it floating around and even more wallpapers that reference that style.

Well the examples you posted look mostly like Romantic landscapes rather than anything Orientalist. But you're probably seeing a lot of Chinoiserie, which is a Western take on Asian, and Chinese in particular, style that came along in the 18th century when trade with East Asia increased. It's related to baroque and rococo styles in particular, which makes it one of those things people will pull out when they want to look rich.

The Arts & Crafts folk, on the other hand, were inspired by the opening of Japan, which brought about a whole new wave of interest in East Asian style and Japanese style in particular, but it didn't have the wealth-on-display connotations.

how the hell did I never connect Chinoiserie with China before

And yeah there are a lot of samey-looking dining room landscapes out there, I just picked what looked kinda interesting to me.

sadly I did not find too many bad murals besides this one featuring lopsided Roger Federer
