I believe I have
an appointment.
Mr. Goongala?
Started a game of White with Tepig yesterday. Just beat the fourth gym and have yet to catch or use anything else. Pansage only gets lugged around in case I need to cut down a tree.

Should I anticipate my rear end getting handed to me soon and go catch and grind a proper team or am I good to just keep Arm Thrusting and Flame Charging my way through all who would oppose me until I get to the Elite 4?

Update 28: Rocketing Through the HQ

This update is gonna have a lot of fighting Team Rocket and not much else, so let's evolve some Pokemon first and have a good time! I found a nice text list of opponent trainer Pokemon for this game, so for now, I'll be evolving Pokemon you could have now and we won't see for either a really long time, or not at all. All here of course.

HP: 90 | ATK: 75 | DEF: 75 | SP.ATK: 115 | SP.DEF: 90 | SPD: 55 | TOTAL: 500
#055: Ampharos

HP: 125 | ATK: 58 | DEF: 58 | SP.ATK: 76 | SP.DEF: 76 | SPD: 67 | TOTAL: 460
#175: Lanturn

HP: 100 | ATK: 50 | DEF: 80 | SP.ATK: 50 | SP.DEF: 80 | SPD: 50 | TOTAL: 410
#131: Azumarill

HP: 65 | ATK: 90 | DEF: 50 | SP.ATK: 85 | SP.DEF: 45 | SPD: 55 | TOTAL: 390
#065: Weepinbell

Since we've obtained a Mankey, you could have a Primeape by this point, so here's the dex entry I got ages ago when I traded Wukong over. It's actually quite interesting that we haven't really found much of our old team's evolutions in Johto. Along the way, Flaaffy tried to learn Cotton Spore (Wata Hōshi), a Grass status move with 40PP and 85% accuracy that lowers the opponent's Speed by two stages. Chinchou, meanwhile, tried to learn Spark (Supāku), an Electric move with 65PP, 20PP and 100% accuracy that has a 30% chance of paralyzing the target. While that's better than most Electric moves, it's still worse than a lot of more accessible ones, so use it until you don't need to.

Rocket Hideout

With all that out of the way, it's time to kick some mafia.

Oh no, they're gonna kick me instead!

I thought about it and I realized the X trainer was defeated is a bit of a pointless screenshot to leave in. Sure it look me 1.5 full SSLPs to figure this out, but better late than never?

Two trainers in a row? I can't handle this.

"statues."

: We'll keep appearing until you trip a secret switch.

While it's weird for that Rocket guy to tell us all that, we could flip that switch now. We won't, cause Mothra needs the experience to catch up.

Every time we step in front of a Persian statue two Rocket grunts will jump us. They're always the same, but if you do flip the swtich, then it just deletes all those fights you could have and indeed the experience you could get from them. While fighting them over and over is pretty tedious, it's a necessary tedium.

: Go ahead, take another step. We've got traps set in the floor!

"are planted."

: You'll just have to collect your courage and walk.

The trap floor is a set pattern of encounters that you can't escape from and they all have Selfdestruct. It's not necessary to go through, but it can be a quick way through the floor and it actually has a hidden item located within.

Caught in a trap.

No matter how you traverse the floor, you will get into four encounters. It's not really worth it honestly, so we'll go another way.

Another statue.

This is when I noticed that there was a hidden item in the trap floor, but not exactly where it was. It's also convenient to head through the trap floor anyway since Mothra is getting low on PP.

It's not a big deal to head through. Everything's level 21, except for Voltorb, which are 23. So long as you knock things out quickly, you'll be fine.

The hidden Revive is on the middle column, fifth row down. If you come up from the other side, then all you have to fight is the bottom middle Voltorb.

Though, uh, that might not go so well. Let's head downstairs for a moment.

: Your POKéMON are hurt and tired. Here, give them some of my medicine.

"best for POKéMON."

Alright, back up we go.

And that's all the statues. I think Mothra gained like four levels because of it, very worth it.

Last area we haven't explored is the center of the floor.

: There are traps to confound intruders like you.

gently caress off.

"about our hideout."

: That things on the floor up ahead is a warp panel. If you step on it, you'll be warped back to the entrance.

PUSH THE BUTTON

Not at all necessary since the statues deactivate the first time you walk in front of them, but I like pushing buttons.

: It needs a password to open.

Well this is awkward...

"for the door."

: Where's the boss? Who knows? Go look for yourself.

Man, if there's one thing I can't stand about evil criminals is how rude they are.

What is the point of this? Ninja hideout indeed.

: Well, duh. It has to have a password that only TEAM ROCKET knows.

: I don't know the password. Too bad for you.

: Those passwords are known only to a few ROCKETs. That ROCKET there very graciously told me so. MARINA, let's go get the passwords.

"incredibly tough..."

So, uh, is Lance Batman?

: A meddlesome child like you needs to be punished.

Ya think?

"MON mad..."

: My experiment is a complete success. My promotion is assured. This loss means absolutely nothing.

David Cameron.txt

: Maybe. But no weakling's going to get it!

She didn't really like my bug.

: But it's useless unless you have two passwords.

Let's go find that second password then.

"by our experiment."

Cannot stop getting mirror matches.

"battling."

I'm the opposite, honestly.

: The very thought excites me!

: Hah! You're nuts, but you have guts! I like that! If you can beat me, I'll tell you a password to the boss's room!

I might be good, but you're amazing.

: The password to the boss's room... Uh..., I think it is RATICATE TAIL.

Alright, we've cleaned out this place quite well. Let's head back upstairs.

Is this the cause of the weird transmissions?

You can just say kill, alright? I'm ten years old, I can handle adult words such as that.

"by a kid too."

: When we were abducting POKéMON, this kid with long red hair and mean-looking eyes just creamed me.

Can't think of anyone with that description, too generic.

Hah, hilarious. Thief (Dorobō) is a Dark move with 40BP, 10PP and 100% accuracy that can steal the opponent's item, so long as the user does not hold an item. However, it only has a chance of stealing the item, though the chance of failing is pretty low, so it shouldn't be a problem. Held Mail cannot be stolen, neither can a wild Pokemon steal an item, but you can steal from trainers, however the item will be returned at the end of a link battle, or a battle in a battle facility.

I hear the gnashing of teeth in the distance.

Rival Challenge

: ...?

: ...Tell me, who was the guy in the cape who used dragon POKéMON? My POKéMON were no match at all. I don't care that I lost. I can beat him by getting stronger POKéMON. It's what he said that bothered me...

: I'm furious that I lost to a bleeding heart like him. ...Humph! I don't have the time for the like of you!

Rocket Hideout

Well okay then.

: SLOWPOKETAIL! RATICATE TAIL!

Alright, time to take on the boss.

: Since disbanding TEAM ROCKET three years ago, he has been in training. But we're certain he will be back some day to assume command again. That's why we're standing guard. I won't let anyone disturb this place!

Alright, this seems to be the leader, the big cheese, the one on top.

:sigh: Johto...

So yeah, his team isn't really very interesting, though I should've expected Raticate to wreck. Otherwise, man, Neo Team Rocket sucks.

: GIOVANNI, please forgive me...

You do that.

While Team Rocket might be evil, the bird isn't. Alright, back to the first password door.

: HAIL GIOVANNI!

A new challenger?

Two new challengers!

"the loose."

: It's harmful to TEAM ROCKET's pride, you see. However strong you may be, you can't take both of us at the same time. Sorry, baby. Now get ready to be thrashed.

I can hear something whooshing through the night...

"the fun around."

: What? You had an accomplice? Where is your sense of honor? As the interim boss in place of GIOVANNI, I'll show you how wrong it is to meddle with TEAM ROCKET!

Okay, so this is the REAL boss of the hideout.

She even has an evolved Pokemon. Good experience for Mothra then.

HP: 60 | ATK: 85 | DEF: 42 | SP.ATK: 85 | SP.DEF: 42 | SPD: 91 | TOTAL: 405
#208: Murkrow

I shouldn't leave Mothra in for every fight...

But yeah, hopefully the executives become more interesting later (hint: they won't).

: It's too bad. If you were to join TEAM ROCKET, you could become an EXECUTIVE.

: But that's fine. The broadcast experiment was a total success. It doesn't matter what happens to this hideout now. We have much bigger plans. You'll come to appreciate TEAM ROCKET's true power soon enough. Enjoy yourself while you can...

And off they blast as they usually do. Hmm, probably an easier way of saying that.

: But I'm concerned about the young guy I battled in the process...

: Now all there is left to do is to turn off that odd radio signal.

Well I'm completely stumped. This isn't a Pokemon and the only thing I can do is fight, sooooo...

"the problems."

: I don't see a switch on it... We have no choice. We have to make all the ELECTRODE faint. That should stop this machine from transmitting that strange signal. It's of no fault of the POKéMON, so it makes me feel guilty. MARINA, let's split the job.

Alright, let's go beat some balls up!

Oh goddammit.

OH GODDAMMIT

There we go... uh, as easy as that! Yeah...

"stopped."

: The LAKE should be back to normal. You're the hero! Let me thank you on behalf of all the POKéM0N. Oh, yes. You should take this. I found it here, but I don't have any need for it.

Yaaaaaaay?

: That's WHIRLPOOL. Teach it to a POKéMON to get across wild water. But keep this is mind. You can use that out of battle only with the BADGE from MAHOGANY GYM.

: The journey to becoming the POKéMON MASTER is long and difficult. Knowing that, will you keep going? ... I see. No you're right. If you would give up that easily, you would have never chased that dream in the first place. I look forward to seeing you again!

Fare thee well, caped crusader.

It was a long journey, but we've successfully cleaned out the rat filled basement. Ugh, Whirlpool (Uzushio: Whirl Tide) is a Water move with 15BP, 15PP and 70% accuracy that traps the opponent in a swirl of water for 1/16th damage at the end of every turn for 2-5 turns. Only use it to get across things, cause it's a super bad move.

Hopefully the new owner of the shop will have an idea of what to do with all the free space.

But that's it for now. I wanna space out our Rocket encounters a bit, so next update will be some SoulSilver, then we'll take on the Gym and then take on Battle Tower - Level 10. Look forward to it!

Okay, a few comments:

1) Regarding the floor with the "traps"? A long long time ago, I did a nuzlocke. And when I reached this portion, I had this to say:

2) The Laughing Man is the best. <3 the Laughing Man.

3) What the hell Team Rocket, you're ganging up on a kid, then you say I'M being dishonorable by having a friend help me?

It wasn't just the split there though. Azumarill has gotten buffs in every gen, something I doubt many if any other Pokemon can say. Gen 3 gave it Huge Power, gen 4 divided physical and special so now it had STAB for said Huge Power, gen 6 made it a Fairy and changed breeding so it could get a ridiculous moveset...

Really, it's a wonder we didn't get Mega Azumarill yet with how much Gamefreak loves buffing it. And I'm not complaining, I love Azumarill.

Gen 5 (White and Black) are absolutely amazing. I stopped playing Pokemon for a while after getting Diamond because it was such a terrible, terrible slog of a game and only picked up White way later on a whim and it blew me away. Gen 6 is not bad, but White and Black are top-notch games. Biggest selling point I'll pitch: only new Pokemon to catch until after you've beaten the game. No more loving Zubats and Geodudes in caves. A whole actually new world.

Spatula City posted:

Pick up Black or White, and then whatever starter you want, but then ditch them when you get a 'mon of the same type good enough to replace them, because none of the B/W starters are super-great (which is a break from every other game, where all of them are pretty solid, except maybe Chikorita). Maybe Oshawott is the best choice because gen V does not have many good water types, and Samurott has a solid movepool.
If you like Black/White, pick up Black 2 or White 2 (pick up the one of the same color as the first one you got). you should put in the time to look for Riolu at the ranch.
Some tips: since Diamond/Pearl, attack type and special/physical have been decoupled, which has been a net benefit to many Pokemon, especially physically oriented Water types.
In Black/White, TMs are now infinitely reusable. It's so great it makes it hard for me to go back to the older games, such is the quality-of-life gameplay change.
Item storage is not an issue anymore

If you pick up X/Y, any of the starters are good, and it boils down to if you want a fast mixed attacker (the Froakie family), a special attacker (Fennekin family), or a defensive physical attacker (Chespin family). also if you prefer frogs, foxes, or woodland rodents of indeterminate species.

Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire I haven't played, but they're remakes of Ruby/Sapphire, so they can't be all that different. Go with whatever you loved in Emerald, the Hoenn starters are among the most potent and versatile (IIRC, all of them were classified as OU in competitive play at one point or another, something I don't think any other generation boasts).

Thanks for the advice. :) I'll see if I can get myself a 3DS to play all the games.

What I remember of my shiny Swablu was that even when it evolved, it struck me more as a tank than a damage-dealer. I distinctly remember mine having higher defensive stats. It's gone now along with my copy of Emerald, but maybe I'll strike it rich again? :shobon:

Mega Altaria is probably one of my favorite pokemon.

Like, I've always adored Swablu/Altaria, but before it was always rather... bad... especially for a Dragon/Flying.

Then came that fluffy monster, who has apparently become one of the premier threats in the Smogon OU. With two solid attacking stats and a pretty nice movepool, the thing is dangerous as hell. Not to mention it's ability is Pixilate, which turns all Normal-Type moves into Fairy moves and boosts their power by 30%, which is good because it gains that typing, turning it into the only current Dragon/Fairy. This means a Return on it hits for roughly 200 base power. On the Special-side Hyper Voice isn't far behind, and is a multi-hit in Double Battles. It's greatest flaw is probably its meager base 80 speed, making it rather slow and easy to revenge kill. Still, I absolutely love the fluffy dragon.

The first Gulpin I ever encountered in Sapphire was shiny. My Marshtomp was about to faint after the rival battle and I missed the shine animation, so I didn't know any better and ran. Then wondered what the blue Gulpin was called for a long time...

Encountered a shiny Cacnea in that same game but failed to catch it somehow. That one stings, I'd still be using it to this day if I caught it. Might need to do some shiny hunting and breeding in Alpha Sapphire to set the universe right.

Caught a shiny Kricketune in Diamond. Soft resetted like a billion times for a shiny Rayquaza in SoulSilver.

Caught a shiny Graveler in X while EV training. In a horde. That was the most stressful encounter ever. Also when you have a shiny trade evolution Pokemon you really start to learn which of your friends can and can't be trusted.

Update 28.5: Steeling and Stealing

Olivine City

Oh boy, sixth Gym. Should be a blast with my fire slug.

Pokemon Gym

Well at least he knows what he's talking about this time.

A trainer?! Man, they've really upped the difficulty of these games.

: Thank you for helping the Gym leader, but battle is a separate matter. Go for it!

Ah, uh, okay. The Gym is the exact same, but we have a few words of encouragement from two Lighthouse trainers.

: I know how capable you are from the Lighthouse. It's time you showed that side of yourself to Jasmine! Good luck!

: But this is different. Please allow me to introduce myself. I am Jasmine, a Gym Leader. I use the...clang! Steel type! ...Do you know about the Steel type? They are very hard, cold, sharp, and really strong! Um... I'm not lying.

Gym Leader Battle

Well this is looking mighty familiar. Like with Whitney, Jasmine's team has practically stayed the same. Especially the drat Magnemite. But it shouldn't be too difficult to take down, right?

Ehhhhhhhh.

Alright, let's move onto the big guns. The only difference in moveset is Sandstorm instead of Sunny Day and I'm wondering if that was a necessary change. Sure, Sunny Day boosted Fire type moves, but it also weakened Water type moves. Steelix doesn't actually benefit from Sandstorm increasing its Special Defense as it's no longer a Rock type, so all the weather does is do some chip damage and makes it weak to Water again.

So yeah, one Surf puts it into Sitrus Berry range, which is impressive considering Croconaw's Special Attack.

Admittedly a resisted Iron Tail still does a ton, but what worked in Gen 2 will work here. It's pretty weak on the special side and you can use your starters freely as they all do just fine against the solid snake. Though if depends if you want your Quilava getting hit by an unboosted Rock Throw.

Overall, an alright battle with just a little bit of challe-

Oh yeah, she still has one of these left.

Oh just go down already.

Pokemon Gym

: In accordance with League rules, I confer upon you this Badge.

: With that Badge, all Pokémon, including traded Pokémon up to Lv.70, will obey you without question. Um... Please take this, too...

: Your Pokémon will hit the target with its hard tail, occasionally lowering the target's Defense... Uh... I don't know how to say this, but good luck...

: The Steel type, huh? That was one heated battle you had!

While I forgot to show off my shiny new badge, we at least have some STAB for SolidSnake. Iron Tail isn't the most accurate move, but it'll do just fine.

Route 42

Following the same route as the LP, it's time to say hi to water dog again.

So majestic... and reminds me of that weirdo we keep meeting. I wonder where he is?

Eusine's Theme

: How refreshing it is! How beautiful it is! And how quickly it moves! Kotone! You seem to be around where SUICUNE would appear. Well, that's OK. My desire to search for SUICUNE is far beyond yours... My grandpa was...quite into myths. I've heard so many stories about SUICUNE from him.

: I won't stop following you until I've found out what you're after... You hear me!

:yikes:

Roaming Entei

SPEAKING OF DOGGIES HERE'S ONE NOW LITERALLY AFTER I STOPPED RECORDING

You can find Entei and Raikou around the Johto region after Burned Tower and I should have expected to find Entei here. For the past... three, four playthroughs I've encountered Entei on the water on my first visit to Route 42. It's weird. We're nowhere near ready to try and catch these things, so I'll do some damage and let it flee. What's cool is that each beast has their own encounter music.

It's easy enough to track them, though not as easy as the Marking Map in DPP. Still, at least it's better than the Gen 2 method... oh won't that be a fun update.

Mahogany Town

...mahogany.

: You hear wind blowing into this room? That is...just me whistling. Enough about that. Why don't you buy something?

We can't buy Slowpoketail anymore... my quest for food continues.

Gimme some sugar!

The Cake of Rage is still around, but now it's a Key item, since it's not coded into DPP. We'll find a use for this... muuuuuuch later down the road.

: I happened to have none in stock then. That person left rather upset. I felt kind of sorry for that. I don't want to upset you after buying one from me, but... Buying a RageCandyBar has nothing to do with whether I'd allow you to pass through here. ...Johto has many places to visit, such as the Lighthouse at Olivine and the Pharmacy at Cianwood. Why don't you slow down and enjoy sightseeing?

HINT HINT

Route 43

Bah.

Well this cheers me up. One of the benefits of choosing either Totodile or Chikorita is that they get to their final forms fairly quickly. Cyndaquil havers gotta wait.

And we're here at the Lake of Rage! It's changed slightly in a cool way, but first, let's see the main attraction.

Gyarados still shiny. Still catching it.

Now the cool thing about the Lake of Rage is that it's raining here on six days of the week, flooding the tree maze and lets us get some cool items.

Uh, well, almost.

Unlike Gen 2, we can easily head back to the main lake, which has a pretty sweet item for us. I'm liking that you get a competitive freebie, saves some BP much later down the line. You can also reach the Hidden Power house as well.

Now then, when you visit the lake on a Wednesday, the rain has stopped and there's more to explore.

Well, it's more like the Lake of Rage of old, but this is how you find Wesley. And that's about it, onto the hidden lair!

Team Rocket HQ

Alright, there's gonna be some more statues and rockets and passwords. All the good stuff.

Like before, I'll be fighting all the Rockets, mainly to keep my five team members up in levels, since there's not much experience to go around. We should be fine.

It's the Trap Floor. And it's different! How you say? Well I'll show you!!!!!!!

There's less encounters allowing you to go across the floor without fighting anything. Though how you would know about this first time around is a bit suspect. Maybe that's the trap?

Buuuuuuuuut yeeeeeeeeeeeah, down we go.

Batman! Passwords!

Oh. I was not expecting this.

: It is me, Giovanni. The majestic Giovanni himself! Wahahaha!

: ...Huh? I don't sound anything like Giovanni? I don't even look like Giovanni? How come? I've worked so hard to mimic him!

: You must be trying to sneak into the radio-transmitter room. Well, that's not going to happen. That room is protected with a special password. The password is "Hail Giovanni." Surprised to hear it from me? Knowing the password won't help you though. The door won't open unless I say the password. It only reacts to my voice.

It's another Executive! It's been a while, but his team hasn't changed from Gen 2, so I won't be showing it like I did for Proton. I will be going over the last fight we have with them, however, but right now, yaaaaaaawn.

: Wow, strong!

"been missing."

: But we're certain he's been waiting for the right time for our revival... Wahahaha! Losing to you won't change the fact that you are unable to get in the radio-transmitter room! You need my voice to unlock it!

Well now I'm completely stuck and the game is unbeatable.

And now I'm not.

One annoying thing is that the bird will constantly lead you back and keep interrupting you. At this rate the game should've just teleported you instead of hand holding, but whatever.

You know, maybe the bird is Batman. Batbird? Crowman? Whatever, in we go.

Oh boy, here comes another Executive.

: It'll hurt Team Rocket's pride over and over again. Making it lessen, you see. ...So, it's time to finish you. However strong you may be, if you two of us fight at the same time, you'll have no chance of winning. Don't you agree? Hee hee hee! Sorry, baby. Now, get ready to be thrashed.

Hey other Batman. I'm about to fight in a double battle.

: Typical of Team Rocket to be so sneaky. Allow me to join the battle!

(I don't think he's ever been to Hoenn.)

: What? You had an accomplice? Where is your sense of dignity? As interim boss in place of Giovanni, I'll show you how wrong it is to meddle with Team Rocket!

"Team Rocket Grunt!"

(From Ariane, a series of European civilian expendable launch vehicles that carry payloads into space and are only used once. Their components are not recovered after launch after they're discarded one by one as the vehicle gains altitude and speed. Ariane 1 was first launched December 24th 1979. Athena, meanwhile, is another expendable launch system developed by the Lockheed Corporation, later merged with Martin Marietta Corporation to create the Lockheed Martin Launch Vehicle. It was then renamed again to Athena and launched August 15th 1995.)

So this is an interesting Tag Battle with Lance on our side and that random Rocket Grunt on the other. It seems a bit weighted in our favour, so Lance and the Grunt cancel each other out as Lance usually targets him. Ariana hasn't changed, so let's see what else the Grunt is packing.

A'ight, cool.

"and Team Rocket Grunt!"

: Tch, you really are strong. It's too bad. If you were to join Team Rocket, you could become an Executive.

Man of many words.

: We have much bigger plans. You'll come to appreciate Team Rocket's true power soon enough. Enjoy yourself while you can... Hee hee hee...

And same old same old. The only difference is that Whirlpool is HM05, instead of HM06, as Flash is a TM. Yay.

And next time, we'll do some Battle Towering, cause I don't wanna see Team Rocket for an update or two. Later!

Hey, heads up. I'm about to unleash my rage.

drat it DBZA, I can't hear Mahogany any other way now!
Also: Ariane is part of an interesting Theory.
Granted, you need the Event Celebi to get the basis of this Theory.

For most of the remakes, the :effort: at correcting the lovely level curve & gym leader teams just seems, well, :effort: on Game Freak's part.

Jasmine's gym 'trainers' turn that lack of effort into the biggest troll in HGSS, and I love it. :allears:

Especially in the Heart Gold and Soul Silver part where he gets downright nasty. And attempts to do a real number on Silver in the Safari Zone.

I remember in Gold and Silver I would always first encounter Suicune to the West, Raikou to the East, and Entei to the South of Ecruteak City which actually corresponds to the direction they run towards when you meet them in the Burned Tower. It made me wonder if it this was programmed to happen. This has doesn't really happen with any of the other Johto games in which Entei and Raikou just appear whenever and Suicune is no longer a roamer.

Yeah. Jasmine is one of my favorites because of how demure she is compared to most of the other gym leaders. Like, most of them are loud and boisterous so it's nice to see one be more calm. Though I do like Fantina because of how over the top she is with the french.

The Unova Gym Leaders were definitely some of the more colorful ones. Drayden alone looks like a man who has tamed Dragon Pokemon simply via chokeslams or suplexes.

He doesn't just look like that, he trains his Pokemon by wrestling with them. That's right: he trains motherfucking dragons by wrestling. Not himself, them.

Drayden is the biggest badass out of all the Gym Leaders. He uses Pokemon on you as a mercy, if he fought you directly, then that's as far as your Gym challenge goes.

Yes, but answer this one: Is he from Pokemon America AKA Unova, or from real life America? If it's the latter, where in the pokemon world is that, and if both exist in the pokemon world, how is it that Unova looks a lot like an exaggerated NYC?
