I know a lot of that stuff like the "no-money/no-respect career" is actually from "The Electric Tale of Pikachu" manga aka the best Pokemon media spin off ever. Which includes such great moments as, Pikachu is captured by Ash because he was in Pallet Town on a bender after his girlfriend left him for another Pikachu, Pokemon being considered so dangerous you need a license to handle them, Pokemon leaving their trainers mid-journey to go on vacation. and Ash actually having to feed his pokemon with real actual food.

Weirdly enough they actually circle back to that in Sun/Moon, where most of Team Skull are mentioned or implied to be impoverished trainers and teenage runaways who failed their ritual challenges. And where the Guides are specifically temporary posts (albeit with an age limit rather than number of losses) to make sure that lots of young people get a turn. (Of course, with the subtext that it's turned into a hyper-competitive sports scene at the expense of the support network it was probably originally meant to be) Also that sounds like the origin story for Detective Pikachu.

I mean it's stated outright that Guzma did fail his Captain Trial and missed his shot, causing him to go rogue and form Team Skull, gathering similar people to him. They are runaways and misguided teens who did fail something in their lives, but I don't think all of them failed their ritual challenges. Failed to see that "age limit" thing tho, as I can only remember that some of the Captains resign to become the E4 and Kiawe resigning to become and awesome dancer leaving his pet Hiker in his place.

What kind of looser do yo have to be to fail the trial... how does that even work? For that matter there doesn't seem to be any real requirement for doing them or repercussion if you fail, so yea Team Skull's troubles seemed kind of self inflicted to me.

i mean, if we want to Seriously Look At The Pokemon World, this is a place that values battle acumen to the point that it dictates your authority and status in society. Being a Kahuna and a Trial Leader is a big deal and going on your Trial Challenge is something everyone in Alola does apparently. I dont think using the main character as the ruler works because the main character is the only one in the world who uses a balanced team of six pokemon, so I think it's fair to say that the Trials and Gym Battles are considered pretty challenging. So Sun/Moon looks at "Well what if you fail them? What if you're bad at battles? What if you can't finish the Trial Challenge?" and so for one reason or another, these guys fall out of the society and with no where else to go, find other down and out youths to hang out with, and do minor crime. There's also a bit about the original Team Skull being struck down by the Tapus? or something? So they've always kind of been on the outs. Saying that their problems are self inflicted when literally everything anyone in this world cares about, talks about and thinks about is Pokemon is like saying "Git Gud" everyone in this universe needs a new hobby and team skull are cool losers Expect My Mom fucked around with this message at 08:58 on Mar 17, 2019 |

But the series also consistently show characters who are bad at or don't want to battle and just want to be friends with their pokemon, dance with their pokemon, make pokemon food or whatever, and that their paths are just as valid.

It says all you really need to know that the leader of Team Skull is shown to be an underachieving abuse victim, and they make their home in an abandoned gated community full of run-down mansions, presumably discarded by the rich. Actually not sure what the deal with Po Town is supposed to be. My guess is it was meant to be a Tapu-proof shelter for the ultra wealthy after they destroyed the first supermarket, and/or a home for Aether Foundation execs before the sea facility was completed.

Team Skull took over Po Town and made it their base, though whether they actually chased out the prior residents or they just abandoned the place is unclear. They got away with it because Nanu, who, as a Kahuna and a cop besides, would ordinarily have been tasked with kicking them out, let them, either out of sympathy or apathy. I don't think there's any clue given about why the place is built like a fortress. In addition to the abuse, Guzma never won anything as a child. His old room in his parents' house is full of second- and third-place trophies. He very badly wanted to be a captain, and despite his strength failed to become one. I think he felt that was his last shot at being accepted by society for the only thing he was ever good at, and he turned to crime out of resentment for the unfairness of it all. This was inspirational to other people who washed out of the trials, who started following him and formed Team Skull. Plumeria, who feels sorry for them, was certainly instrumental as well, although she herself doesn't seem to have failed the trial; she's got a Z-Crystal as well, after all. The imagery with her is fairly consistent that she's different from the rest of Team Skull. She's got the only tidy room in the hideout, for instance. Team Skull does commit crimes for money, mostly kidnapping, and as far as mainstream society is concerned that's all they're about. But for its members it's a community that supports them in rejecting the expectations that society placed on them.

Plumeria definitely has a bit of a 'big sister' deal with the rest of Team Skull, outright says she thinks the rest of the team are idiots, and that she feels sorry for them and protects them because of that. (and they all look up to her in return)

I just question whether Guzma's impression that he won't be accepted by society unless he wins/becomes captain is backed up by anything. My read is that he rejected society rather than society rejecting him.

Also there's a reason why they've never left the early drafts or why the series has only gotten "more fair" towards Ash (At the beginning of the series, he was often berated for either making dumb decisions or even for things that weren't his fault). Also yeah that sort of poo poo wouldn't fly today but it was Japan in the mid-90s when the ideas were first hashed out. Heck, even Brock's characterization of hitting on any pretty woman they group comes across would be considered creepy or downright offensive today, but it gets a pass because that's become one of his most defining character traits in the anime.

The show's definitely shown its change of focus and conflicting ideas especially in the early years, where not much was established about the setting and there was a lot of weird mystery around Pokemon where you never quite knew what you'd find next. That said, Ash pretty early on was established as maturing fairly quickly in some areas, and winning the loyalty of his Pokemon specifically because he's willing to do what's best for them and put their needs above his own; he's happy to let his Pokemon go if they find somewhere they belong. Happened a few times during Kanto, with Butterfree being an early example where we saw it evolve through all three stages and then be let go (somewhat fittingly since many Bug types in general are useful in the early game and evolve super early but soon plateau) and in the Johto arcs it became a running theme, often calling back to where he got the Pokemon in the first place, where he'd basically gradually rotate out his team. (not til later on that they just had Ash leave behind all his Pokemon to start over with Pikachu to soft reboot each region) That said though, Brock's anime characterisation is basically a completely stock archetype you see in shonen anime and many besides. (Sanji from One Piece comes to mind) And something not dissimilar in the rest of the world's entertainment. It's probably gone out of fashion more because it tends to be completely one-note.

I'm finally getting around to finishing my Beast Ball living dex in Ultra Sun (catching Beldum was still probably the hardest part/maybe burned me out a bit) and now I just need to grab the Moon exclusives.
