That said, heavies are fun too. Kind of like bowling if you get the first shot just right... :golgo:

Reason I went Raptor was because the Thunderbolt is still my favourite craft in WC3. Replayed it 5 years ago but without a joystick, and turning with keyboards is miserable with an Arrow or something that turns that quickly, but with the Thunderbolt you can just evaporate them if they go near your cross hairs.

Mission Briefing

Intel says our target's jump time may overlap with our mission time. In light of this, I'm going for a conservative approach. I'm breaking us into teams of three. Warlord has Team 1, Count has Team 2, Starblade has Team 3, and I have Team 4.

We'll deploy to Point Alpha. Team 1 will proceed to their action zone and being mine operations. When they're half done, I'll send in Team 2. Teams 3 and 4 will remain on alert for incoming jump activity.

When Team 1 is finished, you'll rotate into the CAP team and we'll proceed clockwise around the jump zone towards Bravo. Team 3 will then deploy. Teams 2 and 4 will rotate in turn.

Once we're done we're going to go the edge of missile range and sit quietly until the tabbies jump into hell or we hit 20% over mandatory return. We pop our missiles and then see if we hulk them or scamper off.

If we get hit during mining operations, I want the people setting mines to get out of there. Kick any remaining mines out your back door to discourage pursuers. CAP will cover you with missiles until you're clear. Unless it's something small we'll probably run off at that point. If they have anything that can chase us we want to be well clear of the capitals before we engage.

Remember that space is three dimensional and to not to paint yourself into a killzone. Start at the middle and work your way in a spiral out.

Quiet, focused, and not particularly outgoing, Abd al-Raman is ill-suited to leading a flight of fighters. He's a consummate wingman, who he excels at calmly shooting the enemy. He isn't prone to getting over-excited or accidentally shooting friendlies. He finds the solitude of a fighter's cockpit comforting, and only rarely has issues flying back-to-back patrols. As a heavy fighter pilot, he's grown a little lackadaisical about defensive maneuvers, and perhaps trusts his shields a bit more than he should.

Four squadrons of twelve fighters each, so that's 60 lunatics right off the bat. Now add in the Marines, flight support personnel who make the fighters possible to actually fly, the Marines' own transport pilots and flight support, and then the schmucks who actually operate the carrier.

Plus if one wants to get super technical I'm sure there are reserve pilots that can be rotated in in the case a pilot is exhausted/injured. So presumably the pilot roster has more folks on it.

A USN airgroup would often have more pilots than flyable planes for those sorts of reasons.

Operation Kitty Litter
2657.140
0006 Hours

______________________________________________________________________________________________

Day 1 Quarter 1

My plan is to run updates in 6 hour increments. This may mean some updates have a lot going on and others have fewer but it is what it is. That is also the increment for the tech crews refitting, assembling, and repairing fighters so it is a good increment for me.

Achievement Unlocked:
I R PILUT!!

5 xp to Mael "Skinner" Reduc for having the lowest scoring starting pilot.

I came up with a few achievements that are worth a few xp just to make things interesting.

Tech Crews

Tech Crew 1 begins assembling a Hornet (3/20)

Tech Crew 2 begins assembling a Scimitar (2/30)

Tech Crew 3 begins assembling a Rapier (4/25)

Tech Crew 4 begins assembling a Raptor (4/40)

As soon as the carrier exits jumpspace just behind its destroyer escorts the first pair of Hornets launch. In 30 seconds two more Hornets and in increasing intervals four more Rapiers, then four Scimitars, then all twelve Raptors, then the two refueling shuttles, and finally the two Scimitars on CAP launches. As the groups form up they dart off on their missions.

Lead means they are the mission lead. WC means they are the wing commander of a two (or more) ship group (the pilot below them).

0346 Hours
Hornet Beta-1 Patrol

Almanac could hardly believe he was finally in space. He kept telling himself that the odds of encountering the enemy this far from the jumppoints leading deeper into Kilrathi space and this far from the only known Kilrathi base in the system was minuscule. Then his vidscreen lit up with Bedsore's face: "Almanac, I have got hostile bogeys on radar. Can you confirm?"

Almanac glanced down as his guts were filled with anticipation and fear. He was unsure whether he wanted it to be real or for his wingman to have just gotten jumpy. The blips were real: "Confirmed. I read five bogeys and they are turning to attack. Come about to my heading and prepare to hit full afterburn after I do. We need to rendezvous with the Rapiers to take on this many."

The two Hornets hit full afterburn and the cats follow.

In a minute's time the Rapiers appear on screen: "Pepper, Raven, we have bogies on our six. Form up with us as we turn around and we will take them together."

A glance at the VDU showed the opposition. Four Salthi and a Gratha.

"Here we go...."

Round 1

Pepper's leader roll: No effect.
Gratha's leader roll: All Kilrathi get a +1 to Gunnery

Okay, I built the spreadsheet to create random values and then modify them to create initiative. The Def value on the far right is what enemies need to hit you. The Att value is the bonus you get to shoot others. And wow, you ran into a Salthi pilot with an elite piloting skill. Congrats! Realized after too late that the hull and shield values of the Salthi and Gratha were not in yet. They were added.

Salthi-4 attacks Almanac with full barrage: 2 laser cannon hits for 16 dp. Almanac's shields at 9.

Salthi-3 attacks Almanac with full barrage: 1 laser cannon hits for 8 dp. Almanac's shields at 1.

Almanac attacks Salthi-3 with full barrage: 2 laser cannon hits for 16 dp. Salthi-3 shields: 4.

Bedsore attacks Salthi-3 with full barrage: 2 laser cannon hits for 16 dp. Salthi-3 hull: 3. Two crits: Ejection system damaged, Pilot wounded. Fatigue goes up 2 for pilot damage and taking over half damage.

Achievement Unlocked: Crippling Shot - First critical hit dealt

Raven attacks Salthi-1 with full barrage: 3 laser cannon hits for 24 dp, 2 neutron cannon hits for 26 dp. Salthi-1 destroyed!

Achievement unlocked: Death to the Small: First Salthi kill

Salthi-2 attacks Pepper with full barrage: 4 laser cannon hits for 32 dp. Pepper shields: 8

Gratha-1 attacks Pepper with full barrage: 2 laser cannon hits for 16 dp, 1 mass driver hits for 10 dp. Pepper hull: 7. Two crits: Target Track destroyed, Capacitors damaged, fatigue goes up 1 due to taking over half damage.

Pepper attacks Gratha-1 with full barrage: 2 laser cannon hits for 16 dp, 2 neutron cannon hits for 26 dp. Gratha hull: 28

All craft recharge shields and capacitors.

Salthi-3 doubles shield regeneration.
Almanac doubles shield regeneration.
Gratha-1 doubles shield regeneration.
Pepper doubles shield regeneration.

You can convert gun energy to shield energy at 5 to 1 and double your shield recharge.

Round 2

Pepper comes up with a plan: Gives a +1 defense and a +1 to attacks and +10 to initiative on her side (perfect roll but took a -1 due to fatigue)
Gratha-1 directs his wing masterfully: +1 to defense and attacks and +10 to initiative.

Rolls cancel each other out.

I missed some of the shield regeneration on this image. I fixed it. Sorry, still getting the system down.

Salthi-4 fires on Pepper with standard attack: 1 laser hit for 8 dp. Salthi-4 fires dumbfire at Pepper. Miss. Pepper Shields: 12

Salthi-2 fires on Pepper with standard attack: 2 laser hits for 16 dp. Salthi-2 fires dumbfire at Pepper. Miss. Pepper Hull: 3 critical hit, target tracking already destroyed.

Raven fires on Gratha-1 with standard attack: 1 neutron hit for 13 dp. Raven attempts to lock IR Missile on Gratha. Strong lock achieved. Missile fired. Gratha drops decoy. Decoy fails. Gratha is hit for 25 dp. Gratha hull: 10. 4 crits: capacitors damaged, mass driver disabled, computer system damaged, communications damaged. Kilrathi lose leadership bonus due to communication damage. 1 fatigue due to damage.

Bedsore fires full barrage at Gratha-1: 1 laser hit for 8 dp. Gratha hull: 2. 1 crit, capacitors hit again, all gun power disabled.

Salthi-3 afterburns to retreat.

Almanac fires on Salthi-3 with full barrage: 3 laser cannons hit for 24 dp. Salthi-3 destroyed

Gratha-1 afterburns to retreat.

Pepper fires IFF missile at Salthi-2: Target Acquisition fails. Selecting random eligible target. Missile selects Salthi-4. Salthi-4 fires decoy. Decoy fails. Salthi-4 takes 25 dp. Two crits: Pilot wounded, capacitors damaged. 1 fatigue due to pilot wound.

Capacitors and shields recharge.

Salthi-4 doubles shield regeneration.
Almanac doubles shield regeneration.
Gratha-1 would love to but due to capacitor damage does not have enough energy.
Pepper doubles shield regeneration.

Round 3

Pepper makes leadership roll for no bonus.
Salthi-2 makes leadership roll for no bonus.

Salthi-2 fires full barrage at Pepper: two lasers hit for 16 dp. Pepper shields: 4

Raven flies interference to protect Pepper with a +4 and attacks Gratha-1 with a full barrage at -4: 1 laser cannon hit for 8 dp, 1 neutron cannon hit for 13 dp. Gratha-1 destroyed

Achievement unlocked: Big and Scary - first Gratha kill for 5 xp

Salthi-4 attacks Pepper with standard attack: No hits. Salthi-3 fires dumbfire at Pepper: Miss.

Almanac fires standard attack at Salthi-4: 1 laser cannon hit for 8 dp. Almanac fires dumbfire at Salthi-4: Missed. Salthi-4 shields: 2

Bedsore fires full barrage at Salthi-4: 1 laser cannon hit for 8 dp. Salthi-4 hull: 4, 2 crits computer system and ejection system damaged.

Pepper fires standard attack at Salthi-2: all guns miss. Pepper fires IFF at Salthi-2: Missile locked. Salthi-2 release decoy. Decoy successful, missile destroyed.

Capacitors and shields recharge.

Salthi-4 doubles shield regeneration.

Round 4

Salthi-4 shields were 2 points too high. Should be 10.

Bedsore fires standard attack at Salthi-4: Miss. Bedsore attempts to lock heatseeker on Salthi-4 , Weak lock achieved, missile fired. Salthi-4 launches decoy. Decoy failed. Missile hits. Salthi-4 destroyed

Raven launches standard attack on Salthi-2: 2 laser cannons hit for 16 dp, 2 neutron cannons hit for 26 dp. Salthi-2 destroyed

Raven crowed as the last Salthi went up in an explosion: "That was the last of them. Pepper, you alright?"

"Raven, I think I need an escort home. If I push this bird too hard it might fall apart."

"This is Almanac, escort Pepper home. We will continue the patrol without backup. Plus, if we keep you around, you might be an ace by the end of the day. Gotta slow you down somehow."

The two Rapiers turn for the Phoenix and the Hornets continue on their way.
______________________________________________________________________________________________

0453 Hours

The two Rapiers return home and land.

Achievement unlocked: Paste and Glue Special - Return to carrier with less then 5 dp hull left

Major Riley greets you on landing: "That was a hell of a scrape you four found yourself in. We are running your gun cameras to Tactical now to try to figure out where those Kilrathi came from. We were not expecting them this far out. Pepper, good work out there coordinating your team. Raven, drat fine work bagging three cats on your first trip out while protecting your wing leader. I am awarding you the bronze star for your good work. Both of you get some rest."

Assigned XP to Pepper and Raven. No stat increases.
______________________________________________________________________________________________

0596 Hours

Stefan Chen entered the CAG's office: "Major, Tactical has something. That Gratha did not look right on the gun cameras. Some kind of accessory was loaded onto it. It looks like it replaced part of the normal Gratha missile loadout."

"Any idea what it is?"

"No, but based on the records of the kill whatever it is looks like it survived mostly intact. The Commodore wants you to recover it if possible."

"I'll order a shuttle prepped." The Major quickly set up a short range laser comm with the Scimitars on CAP: "Grinder, I need you and And," he fought to avoid rolling his eyes at that callsign, "to stay on station. We are about to launch CAP 2 and then I will need the pair of you to escort a recovery shuttle out to pick up a new toy off from a wrecked Kilrathi fighter. We are sending you nav data based on where we think it is and where it was drifting. Continue the search until you are reasonably sure you aren't going to find it and then come home. Good luck."

Riley turned back to the XO: "Anything else?"

"Yeah, the boys and girls in Tactical are not 100 percent on this but based on the gun camera footage we have reason to believe that these were not ground-based fighters. The Kilrathi probably have an orbital base or some kind of fighter-carrying capship somewhere in the system."

We find this out now when our heavy strike fighters are 18 hours away of course. What else could go wrong? "Okay, I will adjust our patrols to have a wider sweep starting with the next launches. Have you informed the other ship captains?"

"The Commodore is communicating with them now."

Riley pulled up the nav map to redraw larger patrol patterns. So much for his planned nap.

Meanwhile the Raptors leave the refueling shuttles and the Scimitar escort behind to continue on their mission to the jump point.

This ship should have a crew of about 400. It has a crew of about 325 because it was rushed into service. About 175 of those are Space Forces (a subset of the navy for flight operations) instead of regular Navy. That includes pilots, fighter repair techs, deck crews, and some other support staff. The other 150 fly and maintain the carrier itself, run the turrets, run tactical analysis, etc.

Currently the ship has no spare pilots. They have a few extra disassembled fighters as backup but it will take the techs time to ready them. In Wing Commander it is usually more a plane shortage then a pilot shortage based on the games but I might add some reserve pilots at some point. How did this smug dummkopf ever make general?

Just another milk run over here. Just another milk run. We're definitely not going to encounter anything on our way back, no siree.

Yeah, I could also have called this LP "Spreadsheets in SPACE!"

Not complaining! Thanks for putting all of the work into this, the level of detail is impressive.

I'M SORRY, OK!? I admit I've made some mistakes, and Jones has clearly paid for them.
...
But ma'am! Jones' only crime was looking at the wrong files!
...
I beg of you, don't ship away Jones, he has a wife and kids!

Raven, Deep Space

"Pepper, Raven, we have bogies on our six. Form up with us as we turn around and we will take them together."

The moment those words came over the radio, Lana's mind shifted into combat mode, focusing entirely on the upcoming dogfight. 4 light fighters and one heavy fighter. Taking out the light fighters would decrease the numbers damage the Kilrathi had.

Salthi exchange fire with Hornets. Salthi damaged.
Aim at Salthi, pull the trigger. The ship disintegrates under laser fire before its pilot even has a chance to react.
Salthis and Gratha hit wing lead hard. His death would be unacceptable.
Counterattack against Gratha - ship manages to dodge, fire missile. Missile hits home, seems to have done serious damage to ship. Additional hit from Bedsore causes more damage. Another Salthi is destroyed by Almanac.
Gratha is escaping. Salthi hits wing leader, nearly depleting shields. Solution: fly interference, try and keep Gratha from escaping. Aim at the Gratha, bad angle, lock not entirely established, pull the trigger...!
Lasers connect and Gratha is ripped to pieces. Salthis attempt to destroy flight lead but are spooked presumably due to destruction of their flight lead and do not score hits on either ship.
One Salthi nearly destroyed by other pilots, other Salthi attempts to break away.
Damaged Salthi is destroyed by Bedsore. Aim at final Salthi, good angle, lock, pull the trigger...!

Lana crowed as the ship went up, blinking as she realized the noise she'd just made before checking up on her damaged flight lead. "That was the last of them.

Despite herself a slight smile came across Lana's face for an instant before her professionalism reasserted itself and she turned her ship back towards home alongside her barely living flight lead. Pepper didn't really say much of anything, presumably just happy to have survived the battle that nearly killed him.

The landing was a bit off-putting for Lana as she was quickly surrounded by cheering and hollering pilots eager to hear about her managing to score a hat-trick of kills on her first combat flight. Not really used to being the center of attention she was nearly shoved into the rec room before an officer shouted out that she and Pepper had to report to the Major, then she could regale them with stories. On cue, the Major made his way through the crowd, and Lana quickly snapped to attention as he looked between her and Pepper.

"That was a hell of a scrape you four found yourself in.

There's a moment of silence as the Major leaves before the hangar bay explodes into noise again, even louder than before as everyone celebrates the first medal handed out within the Goonswarm. As Lana was now actively being shoved towards the rec room with people cheering "HAT TRICK! HAT TRICK!" and general shouts of "You gotta tell us how you did that, that was awesome!" she couldn't help but think that the Kilrathi would be the less challenging thing she'd have to face today...

(AN: Lana was as surprised at becoming MVP as I was.)
