Supplemental: The Baby Demon and Kid Demon

"Give a name to your wicked son"

As a Character: An unholy product of Sylvian's magic, the Baby Demon and Kid Demon are created from implanting a freshly made corpse with your seed, resulting in the birth of this aberration. The infant demon develops rapidly into a child within a matter of minutes, at which point it is capable of fighting alongside you in a manner similar to The Girl. This is where the growth stops, and the Kid Demon is seemingly subservient to you in totality much like a Ghoul. A corpse of a large demon that looks very similar to the Kid Demon is found in the Old Passage though, so it's likely he can grow into something much stronger given enough time. Whether or not he'd remain loyal to his parent, on the other hand, is something we can only speculate.

As a Party Member: The Baby Demon is AI controlled and is not capable of doing anything. It is not vulnerable to limb loss though and it has a flat 50% reduction to any typed damage it is hit with, making it a surprisingly decent tank. After 400 seconds of unpaused game time, during which you'll get several messages about the baby's growth, the Baby Demon will mature into a Kid Demon. The Kid Demon is a clone of The Girl mechanically speaking, with the exact same equipment options, ability to learn skills, and secondary functions in the dungeon overworld. (AKA cruel options to be sacrificed) This means the Kid Demon is mostly only valuable as a means to get an extra book of Enlightenment from Pocketcat, as nearly any party member in the game is superior to him as an actual fighter. Even The Girl, despite having the same abilities, is much better since she's available from the start. Demon Seed is really held back by needing to explore a huge chunk of the dungeon to learn, requiring you to enter Nosramus' first lair and the Old Passage of the Ancient City to get it. If you're able to make your way to these locations on T&S, you're more than capable of obtaining items, equipment, and party members that invalidate anything the Kid Demon could do for you. Even if you Empty Scroll Demon Seed, I'd say that's pretty pointless as the main use of the Kid is a Pocketcat Trade. You may as well just use the scroll to get the item you want outright. Just as an added kicker, despite there not really being any reason for this given how hard it is to get and how bad a character the Kid Demon is, Demon Seed is not usable on Hard mode and will fail if you try. Aside from that, other notable things are that you can only have one Kid Demon at a time. The Baby Demon can't be equipped but can learn skills scrolls. It's not advisable to do this, as the skills are lost upon maturation into the Kid Demon. Should you teach the Kid Demon skills from scrolls and he happens to die or you trade him, somewhat interestingly those skills will be retained if you create another Kid Demon. The Kid Demon seems to occupy a single character ID, and I've heard newly created ones have also retained limb damage that a previous Kid Demon suffered. Sounds bad, but since the weapons available to him are terrible he's pretty unaffected by losing arms. Should you trade the Kid Demon to Pocketcat, Pocketcat will only accept him once. Any additional attempts at a trade will be rejected.

Part 11 is out! Cahara's playthrough begins and ends as we get the final standard ending of the game and close the book on Terror & Starvation mode. There's still quite a bit of the game left, but the successive playthroughs will have wildly different end objectives as we move to Hard mode to obtain the character exclusive S Endings. Before that can be done though, we of course also have to do a run of Dungeon Nights mode. If you've been enjoying the LP so far, then I think you'll really like what the remaining videos has to offer as the game is really going to test our game knowledge in Hard mode.

Extra Notes

-Keep in mind the options to get Silver coins from Cahara's backstory, taking at least one of them can help immensely in Hard mode.

-Escape Plan is fantastic and Cahara's backstory is the only way you can get it. Only pass over it if you're really confident in your ability to avoid enemies on the field.

-Stealing the Vault key is easily the best way to get the Penance armor, giving Cahara another edge as he is the only character with that capability at the start of the game. If you want to get the Penance Armor for someone else, it's advisable to go through the Well to get into the Level 2 Basement and use that to bypass Trortur until you secure some means of learning Steal.

-Recruiting Ragnvaldr is a no brainer if you get an Explosive Vial before entering the Mines. Just be mindful of your Torches if you take the Thicket route, this playthrough almost ended prematurely due to bad Torch RNG which is not a concern if you head to the Mines. Had I not gotten that, I would've gone through the Mines to get to Le'garde quickly instead, who is also a good pick up due to his starting with Plate Armor and Leg Sweep.

-Massive apologies for blitzing through Ragnvaldr's dialogue. Your torch still burns while talking to people, and I had no extras and no tinder boxes to make extras. You can see Ragnvaldr's recruitment conversation here.

-Picking up the Dagger and the Doll for The Girl can help later in the run, but is far from necessary.

-Securing weapons wasn't a priority in this run, but if you have the chance to grab stuff like Blue Sin and Miasma, it's far from a bad idea to do so.

-D'arce is another no brainer to recruit given how easy it is and what a great ally she is. That innate Fast Attack and the excellent equipment she comes with makes her far and away the best recruit in the game.

-Never turn your back to a Night Lurch. Frankly I should have just winged attacks at the thing instead of running, it doesn't have Death Throes.

-As revealed later in the run, the Penance Armor does not protect against blindness. Avoid Crow Mauler at all costs if you don it, as you will not have any protection against Flock of Crows and the Iron Mask cannot be used to cure the blindness since you can't remove the Penance Helmet.

-Related, if you want to use the Bunny Mask orgy to max out your Sylvian affinity, do it before donning the armor. The unremovable nature of the armor means you can no longer engage in intercourse, even if your genitals weren't mutilated beyond function.

-The Old Knight is easily the biggest thing that would require strong weapons. Escape Plan sets your run chance to 0% when using the Run skill due to an oversight, so you want to use the Run! command instead. The destroyed pieces of armor carry between fights, so focus the Right arm to disable the Knight's attacks and start running the following turn. Just take him out piece by piece as best you can.

-I goofed and we got to see the Hexen bug. Never cancel out of the Hexen before the dialogue box for learning a skill is properly closed, it is a tremendous waste that cannot be undone.

-Between Iron Shakespeare and Nosramus's lair, that was two Empty Scrolls guaranteed for securing the New God souls without having to fight them. I didn't get good luck with the Priest's robes, but I knew dedicating all my lucky coins to bookshelves would give me a very good chance of securing the last scroll I needed. Worked even better than I could have hoped!

-Black Witch is the most essential kill to secure, poison is invaluable for dealing with bosses.

-If you slice the final organ without talking to Francois first, he'll have left the Temple and the King's Passage key will be where he stood. Forgot to check this in the video, but we'll have another chance to see it in the Hard mode runs.

-Combustion isn't strictly necessary for the route I was doing, but I had plenty of torches and food items to spare, so I opted to grab it. Healing Whispers is much more important for staying on top of damage in the final boss fight and dealing with the spike trap damage in the Gauntlet.

-Seriously, never fight Double Headed Crow Mauler. His heads always get a turn, even if you got a pre-emptive strike and the Penance armor left us with no counter to Blindness, even if D'arce hadn't been decapitated and stopped the run there.

-Ragnvaldr took so much damage in the final boss because of his Fur Armor. I never got a replacement for it and I didn't think to remove it, so he took an extra 60% damage from fire attacks.

-The only situation where you'll see the Penance Armor reduced to crawling besides this ending is if you walk over a bear trap in the Tomb of The Gods. The armor protects you against the unique game over scenes of the Guard. (Semi-relatedly, it also protects against the Night Lurch's anal assault)

-If you'd like to use the sprite mod featured in this video, you can find it here!

BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE! The Dungeon Nights date poll has closed, and the people have spoken! Enki will have a sweet (and potentially sultry~) romantic fling with everyone's favorite amorous avian, Crow Mauler! Look forward to the Dungeon Nights playthrough next week, as I have not practiced or looked into that mode at all and will be doing it completely blind save for a guide on the required steps for the ending.

I noticed that Cahara points to make the monster look behind itself when using Escape Plan here.
Is that an Escape Plan thing, a Cahara thing, or did I just never notice it for the other characters? Or did I misinterpret his gesture?

Every character throws their hands out like they're using an item when using the Run skill. That's actually a really funny way to interpret it though, I say we consider it canon.

Supplemental: The Mercenary, Cahara

"I might have the answer. I got a new gig a few days ago. It's a pretty daunting task, but it will get us the silver we need"

As a Character: Born with the soul of the Endless, Cahara has an innate desire for freedom paired with unending creativity. Perhaps that's for the best, as he was forced into both being abandoned at a young age in the capital city of the Eastern Sanctuaries. Pragmatism was the name of the game for surviving his childhood, with the life of a thief being the most immediate solution to his problems. Once he was old enough to swing a blade, Cahara took to the life of a sell sword and never looked back, nor forward for that matter. Cahara lived moment to moment, always looking out for number one his entire life. Even the most self centered can have affections though, and Cahara formed a relationship with a working girl named Celeste, something that ultimately led to them becoming expecting parents. Conditions are harsh in the world, however, and Celeste cannot abandon her brothel work lest their not be enough money between her and Cahara to support their child. The harshness of this situation is what led Cahara to accept a high-risk high-reward job: rescue the Captain of the Knights of The Midnight Sun, Le'garde, from the Dungeons of Fear & Hunger. Everything about this job set off red flags for Cahara, from the shadowy reputation of the dungeons to the fact that the rescue request was coming from officials within the Rondon government even though Le'garde was imprisoned by decision of the Rondon monarchy. And why would a rescue mission be necessary to spring someone from their own dungeons? Despite that, the pay day for this job plus any potential treasures taken from the dungeons would secure Celeste's freedom from her line of work, ultimately leading Cahara to take on the job. Cahara is notably the only character with no direct connection to Le'garde. He has no personal affiliation like D'arce or Ragnvaldr, nor does he have a vested personal interest in Le'garde like Enki does. He is simply some poor schlub who happened to take on the wrong job.

Cahara is best described as a shameless opportunist. Unlike most video game characters that hold the title of Mercenary even though they are more like highly ethics driven private military contractors, Cahara behaves much like how you'd expect someone with no personal loyalties willing to take part in any conflict for money would. He has no problem stealing from others to secure his own safety, even making use of his natural charisma to manipulate people into a false sense of security. He can be remarkably selfish and willing to start conflict if called out for his backstabbing ways, and not all that dissimilar from Enki he'll usually only work with people if he feels like something is in it for him. He will always prioritize his own safety, more than willing to abandon people to save his own skin even when he's on a paying job. He also has pretty loose morals when it comes to sex, more than willing to sleep around with men and women alike despite being in a relationship that has a child on the way. Despite that though, in an ironic twist he is the only character who has a straightforwardly noble reason for delving into the dungeons. Ragnvaldr is motivated by vengeance, D'arce wants to save a fairly terrible person who doesn't care one bit about her, and Enki is motivated entirely by hubris and a purely personal lust for knowledge. Cahara, meanwhile, is here because the money earned from saving Le'garde will allow him to free his lover from the sex trade as well as secure a future for his child. It's perhaps because of this that, despite his opportunism, he is capable of caring for and sticking his neck out for others. He can be legitimately charming as well when he isn't looking to rob you, so he generally gets on better with the other protagonists than the surly Enki. It is heavily implied by Termina and Orange himself that Cahara was ultimately the one to escort The Girl into the depths of the Dungeons of Fear & Hunger, facilitating her ascension. While Enki and Ragnvaldr get more concrete references to their ultimate fate, and it's easy to figure D'arce assisted Le'garde in his ascension, Cahara's fate is left completely ambiguous. Considering that Ending A is absolutely canon, with Cahara as the odd man out it's an easy conclusion to draw.

As your Protagonist:

Cahara's Endless Soul offers him the following skills,

Lockpicking: A field passive, lockpicking allows you to open any locked door that would normally require a small key or red vial. Extremely helpful in the early game and mere a convenience in the later game once you're able to force doors. It doesn't let you open every door, but it does allow you to get through most of them. Sadly it functionally does nothing by the time you reach the Ancient City as there are no longer any standard locked doors to get through at that point.

Steal: A combat skill that allows you to pick pocket enemies when used. Every enemy in the game has one or two steal items (the skill picks one at random to grab in the event of two) that is independent from their normal loot drops. Steal can get you some very valuable items if you know who to pilfer, such as an Empty Scroll from the Iron Shakespeare or the Vault Key from Trortur. With a certain combo of skills, you can even attempt Steals with no risk of retaliation! Steal has a 100% success rate, so you don't have to worry about doing it more than once per fight.

En Garde: An active field skill. When you possess En Garde, you can press the Shift key to begin a charge with a dagger. If you connect with the enemy in this state, you get a pre-emptive strike which affords you a completely free turn to do whatever. With a full team, this can let you kill most random enemies with no fear of retaliation. It also allows you a free opportunity to steal if you have the Steal skill. This also gives you a slight speed boost on the field, giving it small use as a movement tech option! This is a phenomenal skill and easily one of the best in Cahara's kit. Learn this asap and give it a high consideration for Empty Scrolling with anyone else. Do note though that due to a bug, this skill is non-functional if you are a Marriage. This skill is also great for another Cahara skill, which will be mentioned later.

Dash: You know what the hell this does, but for the sake of being thorough. Dash is a passive field skill that doubles your overworld movement speed. I shouldn't need to explain why this is so good, and it is practically mandatory for the higher difficulties. Fortunately, every character can start with this so it's not something you need to route into a run plan. Never start a run without it unless you like having the opposite of fun.

Cahara has no equipment restrictions, he is capable of wearing any armor and can use two-handed weapons.

Cahara's backstory offers him the following,

1.) Steal OR Lockpicking OR 30 Silver Coins
2.) Escape Plan OR 30 Silver Coins
3.) Wine Vial, a bottle of Whiskey and an Ale (and crabs) OR 3 dried meats, a moldy bread and a cheese OR a blue vial and 2 cloth fragments OR Dash. (Cahara does NOT need to pick any specific choices earlier in the story to get Dash)

Alternatively, you can skip his story and get the Lockpicking and Escape Plan skills. (This is flatly worse than any options you could pick with the story what the hell)

You'll notice I mentioned the Escape Plan skill in the backstory but not in the Soul skills. Escape Plan is a Cahara exclusive combat passive that can only be earned from his backstory, it can't even be Empty Scroll'd. This skill gives a 5-10% boost to the success rate of the Run skill in most cases, and an even bigger boost in specific cases like the Miner Spectre. On T&S/Hard Mode, it gives relatively bigger boosts as it uses its own success rates independent from the lower base success rates for Run featured in the mode. For an example, on F&H, the Run skill works 90% of the time against a Guard while Escape Plan boosts this to 95%. On T&S, it works 80% of the time while Escape Plan still boosts it to 95%. This is an excellent passive and has great synergy with En Garde, enabling hit and run tactics in battle. Outside of this skill, Cahara doesn't have much in the way of unique starting traits and begins with relatively weak equipment.

Cahara is almost inarguably the best character to use as your protagonist for a variety of reasons. Cahara's skills afford him all sorts of wonderful perks like great items, free turns in battle, faster movement, free access to most areas in the dungeon, greater ability to flee dangerous encounters, and beyond that he can pick up Ragnvaldr and D'arce as allies, who are phenomenal party members. He can use almost any equipment in the game, so you can easily set him up with a great loadout with either a little game knowledge or a little luck. He has the easiest time getting the powerful Penance Armor should you want to wear it, and he can even get value out of taking the options for money in his backstory if you don't mind having to burn an extra Soul Stone on him or sacrificing Escape Plan. His biggest drawback is easily his weak equipment. The Scimitar is one of the weakest one handers in the game (Though it is a fair deal better than the short sword) and his Leather Vest only affords decent protection against Fire attacks. The number of enemies that actually use fire attacks can be counted on one hand. Good weapons are easy to obtain if you know what you're doing, though, and since Cahara can easily avoid fights and secure free turns when he does need to fight, his base defense hardly matters. If you're just looking to finish the game, you really can't go wrong playing as Cahara.

As a Recruitable Party Member:

Cahara fares a lot worse here. In contrast to D'arce and Ragnvaldr who are generally better as recruits, Cahara is much worse as a recruit than he is a protagonist though he's arguably still better than Enki. To recruit him, you must first rescue him from the Level 3 Prison. He'll follow you for a screen if you accept him to your party, then flee at the first area transition taking an item from you. (What he takes depends on what you have, though he prioritizes Light Blue Vials and Blue Vials.) You can find him again in the Level 6 mines, just past the caved in section you need an explosive vial to enter. Alternatively you can reach it from taking the rope down into the Wolf Mask feast from the Cave Dweller's village. Talking to Cahara here gives you the chance to call him out, but if you ignore his treachery Cahara will join you for real this time. Calling him out prompts a battle to the death with him, so don't do that unless you want the Endless soul and your item back. Should your party be full, Cahara will wander off and be killed by some unknown beast in the Level 5 Mines. Cahara has no skills learned and has the same equipment he starts with as the protagonist, so he's quite bad at the point you can recruit him, especially compared to the extremely kitted out D'arce who's available a couple screens over. Still, he has no equipment restrictions so he's good back up if you can outfit him. I'd only really go for him if someone important died, you can delay his recruitment quest as long as you want with no issue as he's content to rot in the prisons until someone springs him. Cahara is also notable for having no qualms about forming a Marriage, being the only character willing to do it from the jump. He's also the only non-ghoul character Enki can copulate with without breaking the game, as well as the only non-ghoul party member that will consent to the formation of an Abominable Marriage. This isn't really that helpful but it is kind of funny.

It can really come out of nowhere if you haven't picked up the various bits of plot from other run throughs or had The Girl along for certain scenes. For what it's worth, it's highly unlikely anyone got Ending A as their first ending without knowing about it before hand. After uploading the video, I do kind of regret not elaborating more on exactly why what happened with The Girl did (I mentioned the connection between Le'garde, Nilvan and The Girl in a couple posts here but nowhere in the actual videos), but there will definitely be some downtime as I retread sections of the game in the Hard Mode runs, so I'll have a chance to elaborate there.

Random thing to mention, I cleaned up a bit of misinformation in one of the enemy posts. A new video from All-bones Jones was released going over the Greater Mumbler, which helped me to write a better description of what it actually does in fights because I haven't had the chance to fully test it myself. The biggest correction was removing the bit about them being able to destroy weapons, that is not the case. Only Scarabs can destroy weapons, and the Greater Mumbler being capable of it is likely either misinformation from the notoriously terrible Fandom wiki being reprinted, or it was something that only happened in a much older version of the game.

Supplemental: The Penance Armor

The Penance armor is the ultimate armor of the game, which we discovered in D'arce's run and actually equipped in Cahara's run. The Penance armor requires either completing a lengthy sidequest or the Steal skill to obtain, as it is only obtainable if you have the Vault Key item gotten from Trortur. This key is one of the few items that cannot be Empty Scroll'd and the door leading to the Penance armor cannot be forced. For the sidequest method of getting it, you must Talk to Trortur in battle and inform him of Buckman's hiding spot. Selling out Buckman gives the option to do the same to Jeanne should you rescue her in the Ancient City. Upon returning her to the Gollum expy, he'll reward you with the Vault key as well as telling you how to reveal the path to it (lighting all wall lanterns in the Inner Hall). If you already know about lighting the torches, you can instead get the armor much earlier by using the Steal skill on Trortur in the fight. Cahara can do this from the start if he has Steal from his backstory, while other characters need to either Empty Scroll the skill or kill Cahara for the Endless Soul and use two lesser souls to grab it. Trotur disappears from the game, along with killing Buckman, once you enter the Ancient City so the sidequest ends there and you cannot use the Endless Soul from Nilvan to learn Steal for this purpose. You can also botch the quest by selling out Buckman and then turning around and ratting out Trortur to Ser Seymor, who will kill Trortur in a rage. This denies you the key, though probably weren't aiming to get it anyway if you opted for such a pointless resolution to the sidequest. If going for the Steal method as a non-Cahara character, you'll want to dive into the courtyard well to enter the Level 2 Basement in order to bypass Trortur until you have the skill. You'll also need enough Tinderboxes to light the lanterns, but since you always get 5 if you find them in a crate, it's very unlikely you'll have a run where you aren't able to do that.

Now what does the Penance armor do for you after all this hullabaloo? The Penance armor offers great pros as an armor while mixed with some sizable drawbacks,

Pros

-The best defensive bonuses in the game. The Body Armor and Helmet pieces have a combined damage reduction value of 42.5% for slashing damage, 55.25% for piercing damage, and 59.5% for blunt damage. Only the Gaunt Plate Mail and Gaunt Bascinet match these values, and the Penance armor can be gotten much earlier and much more safely.

-The helmet grants immunity to the Confusion status, same as the Gaunt Bascinet.

-The Armor affords you limb protection, giving you immunity to Arm and Leg loss. Field sources of limb loss like Bear Traps, Hurting from the Yellow Mages and Bonesaws can still hack you up.

-Makes you immune to the lunge attack of the Night Lurch, which isn't really that helpful but it's there I guess. Figures I got nailed by that just before I got the armor in Part 11.

Cons

-The armor pieces cannot be removed once equipped, as it imbeds itself into the wearer with innumerable spikes.

-By extension, it prevents sex related actions such as the Bunny Mask orgy, Showing Love, as well as the Wolf Mask Feast which requires nudity to partake in. Even if the armor could be taken off non-fatally, the mutilation rendered on your character would prevent them from sexual activity regardless.

-Shortly after donning it, the game will begin running checks to inflict you with the bleed status every few moments. This can be treated with Cloth Fragments but will quickly return. The Ring of The Still Blood will cure it, but that can't be unequipped. The Salmonsnake Soul will also cure it for as long as it is worn, but the bleed will return in due time when it is unequipped. For best results and Body efficiency, keep the Salmonsnake soul on your character anytime they're not partaking in a fight where someone else would like the limb protection.

-While the Marriage can wear this armor despite their deformities, the Abominable Marriage cannot as it is far too big and irregularly shaped to fit in it.

-Less a specific con of the armor and more a related problem with it being unequippable, Confusion is the only status ailment it protects against. While this doesn't matter too much for most ailments, it is a serious problem with Blindness. Be very cautious fighting the Crow Mauler with this armor on, as you will not be able to protect against blindness nor cure it by equipping the Iron Mask if it gets inflicted.

With all that said, is it worth it to equip this armor? Up to you. Its drawbacks are fairly manageable and there's a lot of value inherent in its raw defense and limb protection. If you can get it, I'd generally say there's no reason not to from a purely practical stand point. The one situation I would advise caution for when taking it is if you need to fight Crow Mauler, something you may want to do for Ragnvaldr's S Ending. Since you can't protect against Blindness or cure it with this armor on, you need to make sure your strategy for fighting Mauler doesn't leave any room for Ragnvaldr to get hit.

If you look at it from a practical standpoint, it makes sense that Cahara would be the one to ultimately free The Girl. He could easily have Lockpicking at that point, so even if someone of decently noble character like Ragnvaldr wanted to help The Girl, Ragnvaldr would have to find the key first. Whereas Cahara could pop it open then and there. And from the layouts we've seen, you have to walk past her cage to get deeper into the dungeon. He strikes me as someone who's overly mercenary, but ultimately wouldn't feel right about walking past The Girl to leave her to her fate when he has the means to release her.

Yeah, despite his unscrupulous nature Cahara does legitimately have a well meaning reason for entering the dungeons so he probably does have the kind of devil may care attitude that would drive him to help someone completely helpless like The Girl. It's also generally speculated that his status as an expecting father as well as someone who was abandoned as a child would have natural inclination towards helping out a child.

Something I do not particularly understand is the Mahab're stuff.

I'm guessing that even in the past you go back to, the gods that lived there are long since gone, thus the crumbling things and walking shades and whatnot.

The thing I do not understand is why you have to go back in time to kill the New Gods, and how that shakes out with coming back to the present and they're still there. I'm guessing that if you kill them in the past, they aren't really dead, given that they're gods (even though they aren't on par with the Old Gods), but getting "killed" still really hosed them up, and lying around in a hosed up state for five hundred years still left them in a state where you can finish the job.

I'm also not sure why you have to be in the past in order to park your keister on the Throne of Ascension and become a god yourself, but trying to figure out how "I went to the past and became a god" shakes out with time stuff is a bit much for me at this moment.

It’s a bit hard to understand and you really have to dive into the game’s backstory to figure it out, but essentially in the modern era the Fellowship are has-beens that nobody has faith in anymore, and thus have little to no power. You need to kill them in the past since they’ve either already left the world or simply have no reason to fight against in the present like Francois. As for the throne, that one is very simple. In the present the God of the Depths’ body has over taken it and presumably your character isn’t able to move the organ off the throne.

Supplemental: The Final Enemies

The last enemy post for the LP! My how time flies. This post will be concerning the last two enemies I have yet to cover, that being the final boss of Ending A as well as the T&S/Hard Mode exclusive boss found in the Void. At the time of this writing, we have yet to see the latter fight within the videos and will not be seeing it until I get to Enki's S Ending route which requires that you fight it. Phobia(s) Triggered: The God of Fear and Hunger actually INDUCES phobia, causing the status even for characters who normally can't suffer from it like Moonless and Nas'hrah.

More or less the true final boss of the game, The God of Fear and Hunger is the ascended form of The Girl. This God is well beyond the power of Godhood offered by the throne of ascension, as the unique soul of The Girl mixed with the essence of the God of The Depths results in a deity on par with the Old Gods. As such, the fight against is a lengthy multi-phase battle of increasing danger. In Phase 1, the mutating Girl does little more than soak up hits. Starting with Phase 2 and Phase 3, she can begin to launch weak multi-hit attacks that are not terribly threatening. The fight starts to become a concern at Phase 4, where she becomes considerably more durable and will use the Stampede of Arms attack, which can hit for up to 30 damage. Once her final Phase rolls around, things become dire. If you're lucky, the God of Fear and Hunger will engage in self mutilation and waste a turn doing negligible damage to herself. Otherwise, she can attack with the powerful Purifying Ember, which hits for about 30 fire damage and causes Burn. She can also force a coin flip attack on your protagonist which deals hefty Body and Mind damage if failed or not guarded against. Fortunately, like so many other bosses she can easily be bested with DoT effects. Likewise, while you will be down a party member as obviously The Girl isn't helping you anymore, having 3 characters in this fight gives you a reasonable safety buffer. If you have it, it's not a terrible idea to up the Blood Golem in the first phase for the extra help. As long as you come into this fight with good equipment, it shouldn't be too much of an issue. One amusing oversight is that if you manage to deplete the bosses True HP in Phases 2-4, it will actually end the fight early. While this is unreasonable for Phase 4, it's more than doable in Phase 2 and 3 with the right loadout. Not that it really matters, much like Gro-goroth the God of Fear and Hunger is way beyond the pale of humanity, and your attempt to best it merely succeeds in confusing her before she awards you a swift death.

The Traces of Sylvian

Phobia(s) Triggered: Erotophobia, Teratophobia

Sylvian is exclusive to the harder difficulties, attacking you in the Void on the path to your ascended character or Le'garde. She serves as an alternate final boss for Ending D and Ending C-II in this sense. As you'd expect of an Old God, she is no joke. The inner tentacles can attack for 25-30 damage, which can be very painful if she focus fires a single character. The outer tentacles, so long as at least one of them is still up, will Entangle a random character at the end of the first turn and bind them for 3 turns. The attack repeats every 4th turn after the initial use, meaning that once she lets go you only have one turn of your party back at full strength before she entangles someone else. This move makes the fight almost impossible to win as a solo character. The Tumor in the center will transform gradually, forming a facsimile of a random protagonist character around the end of the third turn. Each of these tumor clones can take actions derived from the character they are based on.
-The Cahara Tumor while either attack with Critical Stab to inflict bleed or critical state, or launch a double attack that has a high chance of cutting off an arm. Both of these deal about 35 damage on their own.
-D'arce's tumor has a 50% chance to use Leg Sweep, attacking the entire party for 30 damage with a guaranteed chance to take off a leg. She can also double attack, like Cahara.
-Enki's tumor has a 50% chance to cast Hurting for 50 damage as well as destroying a random limb, otherwise he will use Locust Swarm to stun your party for two turns along with light damage.
-Ragnvaldr's tumor will use his insta kill coin flip attack 50% of the time, and will otherwise launch an attack that does about 35 damage with a high chance to cause Bleed.

Naturally all of these are pretty nasty, some moreso than others, and make a perilous battle even moreso. Aside from these actions, Sylvian can also cast Color of The Unknown, a Mind damaging attack that hits the whole party for about 30 Mind damage. That's not all though! Sylvian is the only notable boss that resists Poison and Burn, reducing the chance of those ailments hitting to 10% of their normal value. So an attack augmented with the Black Witch Soul only poisons 10% of the time while Combustion only inflicts Burn about 6% of the time. There is one crack in Sylvian's armor though: she's pretty much the only major boss in the game not immune to Confusion. Locust Swarm can almost completely shut her down, only allowing Entangle and Color of The Unknown to go through. This strategy can have problems if your main character gets Entangled, as they are the only ones who can use that spell. It's a good idea to have the White Angel Soul on them for this fight so you can act more quickly after being released. Another thing that can help is Leg Sweep. Leg Sweep in this fight destroys the inner tentacles, robbing Sylvian of the ability to do Body damage until the Tumor forms. It's a good thing to keep in mind if you can work it into the build. Be sure to bring plenty of Elixirs of Mind to this fight, you will be casting a lot of high cost spells in this battle and combining that with Mind damage from Color of The Unknown, you will quickly find yourself too crazy to cast spells without Mind healing. Once all the tentacles and the tumor have been destroyed, this fight is essentially won and all that is left to do is grind down Sylvian's massive HP pool. Unlike Gro-Goroth and The God of Fear and Hunger, Sylvian simply grows bored with us and lets us go after enough damage is dealt, allowing us to get our regularly scheduled Ending.

Mechanically, the dungeon is itself an interesting crucible in nurturing the God of Fear and Hunger. With the rapid hunger and sanity depletion, The Girl will feel the effects of those, and know utterly what they mean. It does bring to question whether that's deliberate, in that they wanted The Girl to become the God of Fear and Hunger, or incidental in that's merely what the dungeon was already doing.

I think what's ultimately happening is that the prophecy Le'garde was so sure he was central to was actually more about The Girl's ascension, and Le'garde had already played his part. The Girl is subject to the exact kind of tortures Le'garde submitted himself to from the moment she was born, and with her pedigree she ended up being a much purer vessel for the Godly powers contained within the Dungeons. All that remained was getting her to the nexus of the Dungeons, which is what Nilvan is ultimately asking of the player when offering her soul. Still a pretty risky plot, though Nilvan seemed to be more keenly aware of the potential for failure with her ploy.

Since we're on the topic of The Girl, I think it's a good time for some random trivia! One of the myriad of hints in the game that indicates The Girl is much more than she seems is her Soul. Should you use a Soul Stone on her, rather than a skill Soul or a Lesser Soul you will be awarded the Ancient Soul. This Soul doesn't actually do anything, but your character will note it is almost too heavy to carry. By contrast, should Le'garde die and you attempt to use a Soul Stone on him, you'll be surprised to find he actually has no soul to speak of. What exactly this means is up for debate. Valteil's automatons and artificial humans also lack souls, but there isn't really a clear line between them and Le'garde. It's possible Nilvan has something to do with this, but as far as I know Orange has never directly commented on this aspect of Le'garde.

Honestly, my thought is that Nilvan filched his soul during the dream interactions to fuel the machinations behind The Girl. If she's able to dream-impregnate herself, going a step further doesn't sound so implausible.

The god of fear and hunger ending hits way harder on the downer scale than the Gro-goroth one. Yeah it says that she ultimately leads humanity to a brighter future unlike the batch of selfish new gods that we meet and especially with the one real ambitious person in the form of Le'garde being a real self-righteous twat who would be the one guy that would break bread with Griffith over his list of dirty deeds with a song in his heart. But watching her undergo that painful transformation only to fully shed her skin and birth that weird thing at the end, then no matter what she kills you anyway in some random nondescript field so far removed from civilization despite you having saved her and traveling with you all that time, and then that final speech with that track playing, it gives me the heebie jeebies.

The ideal outcome would be to take Le’garde to the Void, get The Girl and Moonless back, laugh at Le’garde as you kill him and ruin his plan, and then ride off into the sunset with the hounds on your heels.

Those were simpler days, Ragnvaldr’s new mentally ill found family. This reminds me that I never bothered to recruit Enki, I should probably append that to one of the upcoming videos.

Eh. It's Enki. But I wonder what happens if Le'garde is in the party when you do Girl Stuff.

Ya know, completion purposes. As for Le'garde and The Girl, The Girl has a handful of scenes concerning him, but there none in the reverse because Le'garde is a selfish prick.

Random trivia time! There's actually an alternative scene for Trortur and Buckman's first encounter in the game files that cannot actually occur in game. In this version of events, Trortur would have cornered Buckman in the bedroom he hides in and you have the opportunity to save him. I imagine this event would occur if you either bypassed the gate into the Blood Pit and took the Basement route into the prison, or possibly would have been random chance. Not sure why this was cut, potentially to give the player more flexibility with obtaining the Penance Armor. Check it out below!

Neat. gently caress Legarde. Does he even know his connection to The Girl at this point? And why was the girl locked up in the dungeon in the first place? So many questions, but I can tell that Nilvan is an rear end in a top hat too, considering she locked her daughter in a cursed dungeon.

It’s never made explicitly clear what the circumstances behind the Girl being the cage are, though it’s likely she was born with in the dungeons and has been imprisoned all her life. Given her unusual parentage, it’s not exactly clear if she’s even as old as she looks. In as far as I know, Le’garde is unaware of being The Girl’s father, I don’t think he even ever mentions his dream of Nilvan.

He may not be aware of his connection to the Girl, or at least lying out his rear end about not being able to remember anything, but the Girl certainly bears some degree of affection for him, given her reaction to finding him dead in his cell. And given her reactions to Nilvan in particular, it's not that unreasonable to assume she knows who her parents are.

Yeah, that's definitely clear enough from the unique interactions you do see. There is some interesting ambiguity about a lot of aspects of the plot that I imagine exist to spur speculation. One that comes up a couple times is that time may not flow linearly within the dungeons (Buckman alludes to this and the aforementioned vague of The Girl also lends to this, with The Void also having this aspect factor in if you talk to Ragnvaldr), so there's a lot of room for theory crafting about the exact timeline and reason for events you can do with the information you are given.

This dungeon sucks. Why do they even use it? They clearly have no control on what goes on in it.

Random trivia time! Going forward with the LP, we will no longer have party members at our disposal that are not of the boney variety. As such, this is as good a time as any to mention events that can happen with The Girl since she's been a popular topic of discussion recently. On higher difficulties, there is an event that can happen in Ma'habre where The Girl is snatched out of your party by a Harvestman.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hnAhZ-1bnpI

One shudders to think what would happen if you don't rescue her, though thankfully she will not suffer a horrible fate if you don't get her back immediately.

That's not to say The Girl can't suffer horrible fates. If you feel like being a dick, there are a number of things you can do with The Girl that result in her death or worse. Some like trading her to Pocketcat or Lady of The Moon do have practical uses, but others like feeding her to the Human Hydra or throwing her into the God of The Depths maw are just there if you feel like being a dick (though the latter is demo only at least).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9osX6e7y8w

Finally, The Girl has a unique ability, and something only she does in contrast to the Kid Demon! The Girl will take blows for other party members should said attacks result in the character's death.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OAtDRi9RqZI

She'll do this for any party member, even Ghouls and Skeletons, should they be targeted by a single target physical attack that would result in their death. The Girl has no sense of self preservation, so she'll do his even if it gets her killed in the process.

For what it's worth, they don't use it anymore beyond throwing people into the courtyard and leaving them to their fate. Digging into the backstory, for a time it seems the dungeons were nothing more than a house for political prisoners and serious criminals, but once they began to mine the earth below it the corruption from the depths rapidly turned it into hell on Earth.

Another question: how did the ancient city get buried so much that a fortress, its basements and mines got built upon it? It boggles the mind.

The question that comes to my mind is why Buckman is even in the dungeons in the first place. He's so hapless that without intervention, he'll meet a terrible fate for several different reasons.

That one has a simple answer that I simply forgot to get from Buckman when I got the money from him in Enki's run. Buckman's crew were on a rescue mission to find the acting Captain of the dungeons, Captain Rudimer. They were scattered shortly after entering the dungeons, and Buckman has been haplessly trying to reunite with his group. Incidentally, the mission would have been for naught anyway because most of the clues scattered around the dungeon point to Crow Mauler being a mutated Captain Rudimer, so their mission had already failed by the time they got there. We will be talking to Buckman a couple more times in the LP, so I should probably try to get his dialogue at that point.

Speaking of true identities, remember that gore room you pass through a few times, the one with an elevator in it? What happens if you keep going in a direction?
