Where did you learn to drive?
Thanks to a Facebook ad (marketing works!) I wandered into a diy pedal site and ordered a basic compressor kit to squish my bass signal a little bit. I want to get a MarkBass Compressore, but it's kind of huge and needs a non-standard power supply. I haven't done any recent projects other than chopping up some 2x4s and plywood, so this should simultaneously scratch the itch for signal squish and a tinkering project.

I debated the Compressore, but didn't want to deal with the extra power supply. Been pretty happy with my MXR as a limiter more than compressor.

Also fixed up my lovely little briefcase turned pedalboard. The "feet" were on the wrong side for my use.

I wish Mooer would hurry up with pricing for the Ocean Machine, after dicking around on my battered ME50's "hold" delay last night I've suddenly got a hankering for a looper pedal, and want a reverb too. This will hopefully be my next purchase (assuming it's not poo poo, though Devin is picky enough it probably wont be)

I don't think any other preamps use this circuit. "

It's been forever since I got any musical gear, but as I just finished up with my first gig in the VFX industry and it went way better than expected, I decided to treat myself. Only a low-quality photo for now, it's been nasty weather all day and this came after dark - but at some point I'll get some real NGD shots.

And what might this be? An Agile Renaissance 8-string acoustic guitar! I was on the fence about grabbing the multiscale version since it's my preferred format for extender range guitars, but since this was a bit of a leap of faith (I love the Agile electrics but have no experience with their acoustics) I went with the cheaper, non-fanned option. All in all I'm pretty happy; it's got a very flat neck, low action on the upper 6 strings, and minus some buzzing and floppiness on the 8th, sounds really good for what it is. I might be somewhat limited in tweaking vs. what I could do with an electric, but I'm still gonna try different gauges and setups until I've reached a good balance.

To be honest, I feel like this may get more use for 6 and 7 string material, just because of the low action/comfort - both tapping and sweep picking work surprisingly well, and as a result I can do some things I couldn't on my other acoustics.

And back to that price - for $450, I got the guitar, a hardshell case, and it arrived one day after I placed the order, using only standard ground shipping. That's a hell of a steal considering how uncommon ERG acoustics are in general.

Holy crap. I can't play 7-strings but this is really, really neat. That kind of instrument for that kind of price? Gotta say congrats. I'd love to hear someone sweeping and tapping on that axe. Seriously.

Here is my final picture post with respect to my new MIM Standard Telecaster.

Recap: Bought a Tele on a whim, because I wanted one; and this one came with good reviews and I am a total sucker for tobacco/cherry/Tri-Fade/etc. burst finishes. Since I have a Talman with Joe Barden Electronics Danny Gatton pickups in it already (they're great), I decided to give Lindy Fralin's Stock Tele pickups a go. +5% Bridge/+2% Neck, and the same tone-wah pot modification that I put on the Talman. I found another Tele trick: turn the control plate around, swap Volume/Tone knobs, and put the knobs right under your picking hand. That's all done. The last thing I need to do is buy a cool strap, which I hope to do this week. My Dunlop tweed strap is fine for now, but perhaps a little "on-the-nose."

This morning, before work, my case arrived.

(To be honest, for the money, I'd prefer a real leather stitched handle and stouter hardware; but this is what $138 gets you these days. It's still quite nice and much lighter than I expected.)

So I put the instrument and receipts and stuff inside:

I've never owned a solid-body Fender or a case to put it in before today. I dig it.

And to a guy like me, this is just a nearly pornographic picture (control-plate swap is clear in this shot):

It doesn't show up in these pics as much as I'd like, but the Tele has much thicker, glossier, glassier-looking lacquer on the front of the neck/headstock yet much less on the back. They call the back "satin;" but as an Ibanez player, it's not what I call "satin." Still, not sticky or too thick.

I don't know much about Teles, and that's a fact; but this is the most "Tele" I've ever held in my hands. It sounds amazing. It has much more honk than the Bardens, and it just makes sense. I'd be surprised if a real Telecaster aficionado wouldn't think it's a great, faithful instrument (barrel-saddles notwithstanding.)

So I have a question: When your pickup-selector knob won't stay on, do you replace it, fix it somehow, or just leave it off?

I'll be recording something this weekend (hopefully) with it, I'll make sure to get it posted here so y'all can get an idea of the weirdness it introduces.

I ordered a set of 12-95 strings for it since it only came with 12-78, which is (IMO) far too little tension for the low B and drop E I tune to. It's a much larger size jump than I was hoping for, but finding useable phosphor bronze strings is harder than I hoped so I just went with a premade LaBella set. Hope that will fix my complaints and bring the guitar to a fully rockin state.

I think I'm gonna do a family shot later today, since it's been a while and I have some different instruments - also to give me a solid view of just how far my ERG obsession has taken me, because I can't seem to help but pick guitars with crazy specs.

Wall hangars are so fantastic, I feel like I'm walking into some boutique shop every time I go into my studio. At one point I wanted to put labels above the mounts and price tags on the guitars, but I decided that was taking the concept too far.

Since I'd been out of the loop for a while, I hadn't realized Carvin is now called Kiesel and they have headless multiscale 8s... I'm super happy with my DC800, it was pre-Kiesel/pre-passive/pre-carvin tuners so it's not even as refined as what they're putting out now, and it's still an incredible, easy to play guitar. Probably the most consistent out of all of mine.

I won't be able to afford one of these for a while (and will have to consolidate my collection a little when I do make the plunge), but holy crap the headless fanned 8 strings look awesome! I was also considering one of the Aries bolt-on multiscales, but since I have the very first production Agile Pendulum 82527 and it's virtually perfect thanks to lots of love from it's various owners, I think going headless is the way forwards.

Anyone have experience with them? Doesn't need to be the Vader 8 or even a multi scale, just curious about the overall perception of the Carvin/Kiesel headless guitars.

Very long story, but I ended up being forced by circumstance to buy a guitar to play on this concert Saturday night. Essentially, we were traveling SF->NJ to play a half-classical/half-electric show, which means traveling by air with two sets of guitars, not my fav. JetBlue was actually amazing with our three classical flight cases, bending over backwards to get them onboard, but the same could not be said for the electric flight cases, which had to be checked. Those cases didn't make it on our flight, and then JetBlue's "expedited" service didn't get them to us in time to leave for the gig, so we had to go BUY some GD guitars to play on this gig, since renting guitars sameday is apparently a goddamn difficult task.

This little baby was the only Jazzmaster at the Paramus, NJ Guitar Center, and it was being sold for $199, so I grabbed it. It was listed as a Used Squier Jay Mascis Jazzmaster partscaster, but obviously it doesn't look like that at first blush, with the weird, relic'ed paintjob, oldschool bridge (the JM JM has a tune-o-matic), Fender Trem, neck inlays, painted/Fender headstock,etc..

I thought I was getting a hell of a deal, because I didn't see that the headstock is badly painted, has no serial on the back, the "inlays" are stickers, etc.. I had figured that since I couldn't see white paint as the bottom layer, that they must have been fooled by the Duncan Designed™ pickup covers, but they might have been more right than I knew.

As for how it plays/sounds - it plays pretty well, and I was unable to really get a feel for the sound, because I was playing it through this weird Egnater that I'd never played before, so it was hard to isolate what was what.

Now, I am uncertain about the return policy on used items, especially total weirdo Frankenmasters, but what do y'all think? Do I keep this weird little thing for $200 and make it a backup, or is it too clearly some beat up frankenstein? edit: Obviously, I need to give the neck a thorough once-over to make sure nothing is terribly wrong before I think about keeping it. Little tired, here.

Mostly, I am just sharing this weird little thing that I got with folks who might appreciate how bizarre it is, but if y'all have thoughts on the above questions, I am all ears.

I finally caved and bought the Helix. And goddamn if it isn't kind of incredible. I've never had an Axe or Kempler because they just look... ill-machined (and some of the reviews out there seem to agree with me on that) so I can't compare it to that but it's light years ahead of anything Line6 has done before, much less Amplitube (who I think, personally, do better work than Line 6 has done to this point) or Native Instruments... the best software-only modeler so far in my opinion to date has been S-Gear's stuff, and this trumps that handily.

And I gotta agree that it's insanely intuitive for such a complex rig. Though I do spend most of my time editing it via the editing app on the Mac than futzing with the foot pedal, which I use primarily while actually playing to change patches or turn effects on/off.

The sounds, though... man. It replicates some amps I've had in the past amazingly well, with great breakup and pot-control for volume and all the poo poo that modelers traditionally suck at. It's been inspiring; I've tracked more demos and riff ideas in the last month than I have in the last year before I got it. It's just a pleasure to use and sounds loving amazing just running through my studio monitors.

I wonder if the Helix will ever get integrated wireless like the new Spider V's did. Maybe when they eventually come out with a Helix amp?

My buddy has an AxeFX II with MFC and an AX8, but just going Helix would be just as powerful as the AxeFX and more portable than the AX8 (as you need external expression pedals.)

I'm actually going to get a new Spider V setup (with FBV3 and G10 wireless) to replace my 6505+ and pedalboard. Post-Yamaha Line6 is doing a lot of really nice stuff.

That's about the only thing I think it's missing (though some folks on their forum are hilariously offended that it doesn't have... a metronome? Whatever). I'd buy one of those $100 receivers in a heartbeat, but I'm still old guy squeamish about wireless overall.

In terms of amp sims, it seems like we've hit a point where advances are much more incremental; the core of amp emulation has been nailed down pretty well, and it's primarily about mimicking the power amp + cabinet interaction. While the current focus has been on high quality IRs (and they do sound incredible), I feel like that's a bit of a dead end - it requires a real studio to create the IR, and even something like a different mic position requires a whole separate impulse response. Still, I haven't heard a non IR cab sim I've been seriously impressed with, so for now IRs are the go-to.

For me personally, the AxeFX Ultra was the "final piece"... something I'm so content with, I've had no desire to expand or upgrade. I don't aim for clones of existing tones, I just want stuff that sounds cool to me, and the sheer power behind it has been able to generate practically any sound I've wanted.
I never thought I'd reach that point with any bit of musical gear, GAS is a hell of a condition... but drat, I've been using the AxeFX since 2011, and unless it breaks I'll be using it for at least another 5 years.

Back to guitars, I put new strings on the 8 string acoustic, and the heavier gauges made a world of a difference - it's no longer quiet and floppy on the E1, and the additional tension on the B1 and E2 have noticeably helped sustain.
I highly recommend using the heavier gauges, they seem a little crazy at first but once they're on it's apparent why the set is done this way.
And to make it easier, here's a link to Rondo for the set I went with: http://www.rondomusic.com/product8362.html . They're not the cheapest, but having a good sounding 8 is worth the price. Gauges are as follows: .012, .016, .024w, .032, .042, .053, .070, .095

That's not what gaslighting means you hyperbolic dipshit.
Regarding the Axe-Fx talk, I have an Axe-Fx II and I love it. Couldn't be happier. And as for the comment above about the machining, I personally think it's built with excellent quality.. and so to a ton of world touring artists as well actually. I bought an Axe Ultra in 2009 and never had the slightest bit of trouble with it. Then I bought an Axe-Fx II in 2012 and have been using it regularly ever since. Same thing, zero issues whatsoever.

My current tube gear amp setup is a rack with two switchable preamps, a Mesa Triaxis and ENGL 570 going into a VHT 2/90/2. I couldn't be happier with the Axe-Fx for amp tones. At this point, my great big tube rig is basically a "fun at home/just have it to have it for historical reference/been unwaveringly itching for this exact setup for the last 5-6 years and finally got into the position to buy it so I'm not turning it down now" rig. I love my tube rig, but if it vanished in a puff of smoke and the money zapped back into my account today, and I never had the opportunity to buy that setup again, I'd still be perfectly content with my sound considering how happy I am with the Axe-Fx, and that it can exactly duplicate the sound and feel of it.

I've had my AFX for about 2 years. It has pros and cons.

The convenience of it is pretty loving awesome. The sound of the unit is also pretty great (albeit I don't think it's as amazing as what people make out). I think it's a great thing to have at home if you're into recording because it's dead simple to knock up fairly decent sounds without having to gently caress around with microphones or a variety of amps.

I've learned a tonne about guitar amps and tone from having it, so for me it's been worth it. I still think real amps sound better, but it's not possible for me to run a cranked Bogner Uberschall in a normal home...

Catching up on this thread took awhile but I actually have something to contribute so that's pretty cool. Moving out of my middle floor apartment and into a house last year means I've gotten way more time to play with an amp and not just headphones. I also figured I should get a few upgrades to bring my dream of becoming a super shittier version of Chris Wolstenholme closer to fruition.

So over the course of the last couple of months I've bought the following:

I got this Fender rumble 100 at my local pawn shop for $130. It was kind of dirty/dusty but it sounds good and all it took was a lint roller + canned air to make it look almost new. It wasn't exactly what I had planned to get but seems like it was a decent deal after checking online. I was thinking about getting an orange combo or a head/cab setup but getting this amp helped me save some money. The LS-2 I got on reverb new for $80 with the 15% black friday code and the OC-2 I also got on reverb after haggling down to $100. I should have checked on ebay first though because I discovered a couple listings for the OC-2 for 50-70 bucks, that thing is almost impossible to get in decent shape on reverb for under $100. The Future impact I bought about a month ago and it's incredibly fun but I don't have a midi setup so I'm just messing around with the standard box settings at the moment, expensive but still cheaper than a Deep Impact. I almost didn't pull the trigger but I didn't want kick the can on it and then have the guy decide he wasn't going to make anymore. The final pic is a Fender American Deluxe Jazz Bass from 2014 that has a grand total of 3 hours play time on it and fell under the unfortunate circumstance of a person buying it, then buying something they liked even more shortly afterward so it sat in the case until now. Bass should be here next week I'd guess and I can't wait. I'll probably post a better pic of the bass when it arrives, the sunburst doesn't show up quite as good in that pic.
