Part 46: Episode 3, Day 2, Trial: Is Anyone Really Buying This? Sound: Realization Right, we left off with a bold claim from Ms. Oldbag. Sound: Stab 2 Sound: Stab 2 Both attorneys are shocked, cut to the heart, really. Sound: Whack Maybe this won't be entirely bad for us? Please make known all the information in your possession ahead of time! Sound: Whack Anyway, I showed the photo to the young detective. He told me "this isn't any good as evidence, pal." Sound: Objection Sound: Stab Let's hear about your proof, then. Sound: Testimony 2 Music: Questioning - Moderato That morning, during the run-through of the action scene... He broke one of the props, it was a big mess. Apparently, he sprained his ankle pretty bad. That's how I knew it was Powers. Happy? Not really. Vague, crappy testimony, impossible to disprove. What are we supposed to do with that? Music: Silence Very well. Mr. Wright, you may cross-examine the witness. Good idea as any I guess! Sound: Testimony 2 Music: Questioning - Moderato I never say anything I don't mean, mind you! Umm... Sound: Objection Sound: Drama Pound Yikes, stay down, lady! (Hey, I haven't said anything yet!) Everything I've said is on the straight and narrow! The up and up! Youth today! Always whining about each other, pointing fingers this way and that! It's enough to make an old lady want to cry... Sound: Desk Slam Mr. Wright! Sound: Whack Hey, this is your witness, deal with it! That morning, during the run-through of the action scene... Who was present at the run-through? Then poor old Hammer, the Evil Magistrate. Sound: Realization And what exactly were you doing? Observing! Just... observing. Oh, she was off moving backdrops around and such. (So she didn't see the run-through, then...) Well, isn't that convenient! I saw Powers trip and fall! Sound: Realization So Powers sprained his ankle. You... helped make it better? Just a straight line right there. Oh, her? She was cleaning up backdrops, I think. She didn't know about Powers's ankle. And can't corroborate your crazy story! (Hmm...) He broke one of the props, it was a big mess. He broke a prop? Huh? Then how did he kill the victim with it later? Sound: Realization Luckily I was there with my duct tape to fix it. (This strikes me as a significant detail...) (I'd better write this down in the Court Record.) I guess that's some strong duct tape, if it held up to a stabbing a couple hours later. In fact, you can see in the flashback image above (behind the partially-transparent text box) that the spear head has broken off. Apparently, he sprained his ankle pretty bad. Isn't that what she just said? Not so bad that he couldn't walk around. (Thus the nap...) Anyway, I saw him dragging his foot when he walked. (Dragging his foot... okay.) You can see he's dragging his leg! See? Clear as day! Maybe it really is Powers, and we're barking up the wrong tree here? Also you can kind of see the duct tape wrapped around where the spear head joins the shaft. Hmm. It does look like he was dragging his foot. Sound: Light Bulb That's how I knew it was Powers. Happy? Sound: Desk Slam Sound: Desk Slam Great, dueling desk slams. Yes, but only Mr. Powers would have been dragging his leg! (There's got to be more to this. I'd better keep pressing her.) That press loops us back to the same line of testimony. Running through all of the testimony then just gives us a reminder to keep pressing... Well, she seems pretty sure that was Powers in that photo... Once we've messed around long enough, some hidden timer expires and Edgeworth butts in... Sound: Desk Slam I think we've heard enough! Haven't we, Your Honor? Which is? Sound: Realization drat, judge, that's a fantastic question! Umm... hmm. Sound: Realization So Powers wasn't wearing it when the body was discovered? And no one thought that was odd, because no one but Oldbag (and I guess Gumshoe) knew that it was someone wearing the costume that had gone to the studio... We're looking, though. Have you tried looking in Studio Two? There must be a reason it's mysteriously inaccessible... Hmm... Anyway, that's not important! Clear? This case is even shakier than the one against Maya last episode. Music: Suspense Hmm... I suppose that's right. Uhh, we object, duh. Sound: Desk Slam Hold it right there! Sound: Objection Hmm... The defense has a point. We have to consider that possibility, also. I don't like that look... quote:It doesn't seem like it should, but waiting instead of objecting still ends up with the same result: What's to continue? Not that I'm complaining about getting another shot at this. Music: Silence Sound: Light Bulb Sound: Testimony 2 Music: Questioning - Moderato No one else went there! If they had, I would have seen them! That's it? I am completely out of ideas. That just looks the same as her first set of testimony. Music: Silence Hmm... So, if no one else went to the studio... Mr. Wright, you may cross-examine the witness. Sound: Testimony 2 Music: Questioning - Moderato The time of poor Hammer's death was 2:30 PM, true? How do you know that? Sound: Light Bulb I gave donuts to the young detective. Sound: Realization Yeah, we heard all that the first time around. The only person I saw go to the studio before then was Will Powers! Are you absolutely sure!? (Nobody suspicious lookin'... Right.) No one else went there! What about before you got to the guard station? You mean before 1:00? Not to mention... If they had, I would have seen them! Sound: Desk Slam Are you sure!? Sound: Whack Hey, that's actually a valid legal objection for once! That's right, sonny! Sound: Whack Sound: Realization (E-Edgey-boy...?) I guess he isn't a fan of the nickname, either. Anyway, running through to the end of the testimony gets us more time with Maya: Uh, thanks, Maya. Or, for that matter, entirely forgetting them. How convenient. Sound: Whoops (Something for you to look forward to, perhaps?) I was confused when first recording this update, but I think I figured it out while writing it up. Can you?
