We're at the end of a very long branch. If we get made on this end of the system they're going to harden up their defenses. If we run into anything capable of making our location when we're more then two hours out from the mission zone I'm scrubbing the mission. It's better then getting chopped up in pieces.

If we're less than two hours out we'll go ahead; chances are we can fulfill our mission before they can get anything substantial out to meet us.

Now back to comm exercises, I don't want any gently caress ups from lack of practice.

Raven, that was awesome. Pepper's definitely buying you a beer this evening. Pepper's generally very happy with how that fight went. Obviously he can improve his commands and guidance a little bit - it wouldn't do to be shown up by Gralthi leaders in the future - but he will definitely count that a success even though he nearly got blown out of the sky. (Though it's sure an incentive to work on some piloting!)

0600 Hours

______________________________________________________________________________________________

Day 1 Quarter 2

Repair Crews

Work is put off on assembling new Hornet to repair the Rapier shot up in last fight. Work continues on another Scimitar, Rapier, and Raptor. Work is slow due to the novice crews (and my evil dice). Unlikely anything will be up and running before tomorrow.

0600

CAP-1 departs with SHR-1 to investigate Gratha wreckage. CAP-2 takes over.

0800

Hornet and Rapier Alpha 1 and Beta-1 patrols land. Alpha 2 and Beta 2 patrols launch.

0930

Scimitars of CAP-1 and SHR-1 arrive in area and commence search. Initial estimates of location are incorrect. Ships begin fanning out for larger search.

1030

And continues the ever-widening search and finally spots the device the Gratha was carrying: "I have got it. Grinder and Shuttle-1, head for my location. We will pick up this toy and head home." Shuttle retrieves the device via tractor beam and ships head for home.

1151

The Gamma minelaying mission arrives on station and the team takes it in turns to drop their four mines each around the jump point. 48 mines are on station. As they turn to head for home Warlord mopes privately about how the mines in his space sim look much more authentic and how the enemy ships coming in would have much more fidelity.....wait....enemy ships. He quickly calls the whole squadron and all spot them. 8 Dralthi coming in from a bearing matching the Kilrathi moon base.

Space Case orders the squadron to form around him and Count interjects, "This makes little sense. Why would the Kilrathi patrol a jump point leading deeper into their own space? And why in such force?"

Unicorn piped up: "This isn't a patrol....its an escort. Something is about to come through."

Cleric: "Yeah, I got jump activity."

Added Space added it all up and gave orders: "Starblade, take the second half of the squadron and fight those Dralthi. Come back as soon as you finish them off. Everyone else come with me. Stay away from our own mines but be ready to finish off anything else that comes through."

The Kilrathi jump drive tore a hole through space and a Ralari-class destroyer came into being. As it did its laser turrets immediately opened fire to begin filling the sky as the mines slowly moved in on the ship.

Pre-Battle

35 of 48 mines hit the Kilrathi Destroyer. 13 mines remain.

35 mines at 60 dp each comes to 2,100 dp.

250 damage blocked by shields, 1,950 damage done to hull leaving destroyer with 550 dp left. 2 critical hits: shields damaged, engines damaged

Round 1

Space Case provides a +1 to Attack and Defense with leadership roll.
Dralthi-1 provides no bonus with leadership roll.

Added Space attempts to coordinate his six Raptors to all attack topside to keep turret fire down to 4 of the ship's 8 laser turrets. Warlord and Skinner fail to coordinate and can be shot by other turrets.

Ralari-1 fires 8 laser turrets for 16 total shots:

Space Case takes 2 hits for 16 dp. Shield: 24
Blowout takes 1 hit for 8 dp. Shield: 32
Warlord takes 3 hits for 24 dp. Shield: 16
Skinner takes 1 hit for 8 dp. Shield: 32
Count takes 1 hit for 8 dp. Shield: 32
Vaudevillain takes 2 hits for 16 dp. Shield: 24

Warlord fires full barrage at Ralari-1: 3 neutron hits, 4 mass hits for total of 79 dp. Ralari-1 hull: 471, 1 crit sustained, power plant, can only fire half of turrets until end of next round.
Achievement Unlocked - Taking on the Big Boys - First pilot to attack enemy capital ship.

Unicorn fires full barrage at Dralthi-3: 3 neutron hits, 3 mass hits for total of 69 dp. Dralthi-3 destroyed
Achievement Unlocked - Flying Pancake - First pilot to kill a Dralthi Mk1

Dralthi-8 fires full barrage at Unicorn: 2 laser hits for 16 dp. Shields: 24

Vaudevillain fires full barrage at Ralari-1 turret flying evasively: 2 neutron hits, 2 mass hits for 46 dp. 1 topside laser turret destroyed. Ralari-1 hull: 445
Achievement unlocked - Surgeon - First pilot to knock out a laser turret

Starblade attacks Dralthi-4 with full barrage: 2 neutron hits, 2 mass hits for total of 46 dp. Hull: 4
Dralthi-4 counterattacks by dropping mine: miss.

Wingman fires standard attack at Dralthi-4: 1 neutron hit, 1 mass hit for 23 dp. Dralthi-4 destroyed

Dingo fires full barrage at Dralthi-5: 1 neutron hit for 13 dp. Shields: 7
Dralthi-5 counterattacks by dropping mine: hit, Dingo takes 30 dp. Shields: 10

Blowout fires full barrage at Ralari-1: 2 neutron hits, 2 mass hits for 46 dp. Hull: 399

Count fires full barrage at Ralari-1: 3 neutron hits, 3 mass hits for 79 dp. Hull: 320

Cleric fires full barrage at Dralthi-5: 3 neutron hits, 1 mass hit for 49 dp. Dralthi-5 destroyed

Dralthi-7 fires standard attack at Unicorn: 1 laser hit for 8 dp. Dralthi-7 attempts to lock heatseeker on Unicorn, fails. Shields: 12

Dralthi-2 fires full barrage at Duke: 1 laser hit for 8 dp. Shields: 32

Space Case fires full barrage at Ralari-1: 1 neutron hit, 3 mass hits for 43 dp. Hull: 277

Dralthi-1 fires full barrage at Dingo: 2 laser hits for 16 dp. Hull: 34

Skinner fires full barrage at Ralari-1: 3 neutron hits, 2 mass hits for 59 dp. Hull: 218

Duke fires full barrage at Dralthi-6: 4 neutron hits, 2 mass hits for 72 dp. Dralthi-6 destroyed

Ralari fires 1 antimatter gun turret: Miss.

I decided to split capital ship fire in the turn sequence. Their defense guns have a longer range then fighter guns so I let their defense turrets fire first and their anti-capship guns fire last. They hurt.....a lot but their accuracy against fighters is horrible.

Shields and guns regenerate.

Dingo doubles shield regeneration.
Destroyer regenerates half shields due to crit.

Space Case did a quick count. No losses and four Dralthi down. Then the jump point swirled up again. Two Kilrathi medium cargo ships came through. Nice....new almost defenseless juicy targets coming up in the wake of the Ralari, possibly supplies for that carrier or for the moon base in system: "Keep pounding on that destroyer. We can clean up the transports once it goes down."

Round 2

13 mines attack Mtrans-1: 11 hit. 2 remain.
11 mines hit for 780 dp. Mtrans-1 destroyed.

2 mines attack Mtrans-2: 1 hit. 1 remains.
1 mine hits for 60 dp. Shields: 40

Added Space makes Leadership Roll: No bonus
Dralthi-1 makes Leadership Roll: No bonus

The Raptors attempt to coordinate again to hit the Ralari topside. Count is the only pilot to fail.

Ralari-1 fires 4 turrets for 8 total shots:

Space Case takes 2 hits for 16 dp, Shields: 18
Count takes 1 hit for 8 dp, Shields: 32

Mtrans-1 fires 2 turrets for 4 total shots:

Count takes 1 hit for 8 dp, Shields: 24

Mtrans-2 fires 2 turrets for 4 total shots:

Count takes 1 hit for 8 dp, Shields: 16

Dralthi-2 makes standard attack on Dingo: 2 laser hits for 16 dp. Dralthi-2 attempts to lock Heatseeker on Dingo: Strong lock, missile fired. Dingo launches decoy: failure. Missile hits for 30 dp. Hull: 8, communications damaged, 1 heatseeker disabled, target tracking destroyed, neutron cannon disabled, computer system damaged. Fatigue increased by 1 due to damage.
"CRICKEY!?!"

Blowout attacks Ralari-1 with standard attack: 1 neutron hit, 2 mass hits for 33 dp. Blowout attempts to lock Heatseeker on Ralari-1: Missile locked. Missile does 60 dp. Hull: 167

Warlord attacks Ralari-1 with standard attack: 1 neutron hit, 1 mass hit for 23 dp. Attempts to lock Heatseeker on Ralari-1: Missile locked. Missile does 60 dp. Hull: 84

Dingo attempts to withdraw from combat.

Duke makes standard attack on Dralthi-7: 2 neutron hits, 2 mass driver hits for 46 dp. Dralthi-7 destroyed

Skinner attacks Ralari-1 with standard attack: 1 neutron hit, 1 mass hit for 23 dp. Attempts to lock heatseeker: Missile locked. Missile does 60 dp. Hull: 1

Space Case attacks Ralari-1 with a standard attack: 2 neutron hits, 2 mass hits for 46 dp. Ralari-1 destroyed
"My clan shall avenge my DEATH!!!!"
Achievement unlocked: Ralari Down - First pilot to get the killing shot on a Ralari

Unicorn attacks Dralthi-8 with a standard attack: 1 neutron hit, 1 mass hit for 23 dp. Attempts to lock heatseeker: Strong lock, missile fired. Decoy failed. Missile hits for 30 dp. Dralthi-8 destroyed

Cleric attacks Dralthi-1 with a standard attack: 1 neutron hit, 1 mass hit for 23 dp: Attempts to lock heatseeker: Solid lock, missile fired. Decoy failed. Missile hits for 30 dp. Dralthi-1 destroyed

Starblade attacks Dralthi-2 with a standard attack: 2 mass hits for 20 dp: Attempts to lock heatseeker: Strong lock, missile fired. Decoy failed. Missile hits for 30 dp. Dralthi-2 destroyed

Wingman, seeing no opponents, afterburns towards the transports and will be able to fight them next round.

Count attacks Mtrans-2 with a standard attack: 1 neutron hit, 2 mass driver hits (1 crit) for 38 dp. Attempts to lock heatseeker: Success, missile hits for 60 dp. Hull: 542

Vaudevillain attacks Mtrans-2 with a standard attack: 1 neutron hit, 2 mass driver hits for 33 dp. Attempts to lock heatseeker: Success, missile hits for 60 dp. Hull: 449

Victory seemed certain. With only a single transport left this would be a clean sweep. But this was not the entirety of the Kilrathi force. The jump point swelled up again and disgorged a Fralthi cruiser. Capable of carrying anywhere from 20 to 50 fighters depending on configuration and much tougher then the Ralari.

:siren: Combat Vote :siren:

The Raptors have about 13 heatseekers left amongst them. Dingo has two more but with his target tracking out he has no way to launch them. The Fralthi probably has fighters on ready launch (standard procedure when jumping) so more small kitties will probably join the fight quickly. It is also possible the cruiser has more escorts or more transports behind it still waiting to jump in. Other important note: It will be difficult/dangerous to rescue ejected pilots this far from the carrier.

What should the order be?

A. Bug Out We have done enough damage, better to get everyone out of here alive.

B. Take out the Transport and then run Risk for a quick score. Dump guns and missiles of the seven raptors into the transport and hopefully take it out and then bug out under the Fralthi's guns and whatever it can launch. Someone could die.

C. Live Very Dangerously Attack the Fralthi. Target the turrets and hope you can disable enough of them before fighters start getting shot down. It will be a long slog to take out the cruiser with most fighters only carrying a single missile each. Casualties could be high and it may not work. I will bug you out if the battle becomes untenable or impossible. This is not a fight to the death vote. Taking out the cruiser might be worth it in the big picture if it works.

Voting Rules

As the guy in charge of the squadron Added Space counts as 3 votes. Everyone else in the squadron counts as 2 votes. People in other squadrons or people who just want to vote because they are here get 1 vote each. Please bold your vote and specify how many votes you have as I do not want to reference the roster to figure it out.

Good fight. I hadn't tested the capital ship rules very much so it was interesting to try. Mines are nasty obviously if you can set them up in advance. Fighting the Ralari without them would have taken longer but I think the Raptors could have done it and I would have hit more turrets if you have to whittle it down more slowly.

Fatigue and yes. It is worth noting that long missions can also increase fatigue. All the Raptor and Scimitar pilots who are part of the minelaying are going to get a point when they get back as they will have been in the cockpit for almost 24 hours.

The plane is getting patched up. There is actually one spare Rapier but it belongs to the CAG and he probably will not give it up unless the situation is desperate. The techs are working on getting spare planes ready but it will take time.

B. Whatever's on it, it's definitely important to have this kind of escort. We're not taking on a loving cruiser, but we can magdump the thing in hopes of completely crippling whatever they were doing. Then leave before too many die.

Taking on a cruiser on our own is a little above our paygrade, but any supplies this close to the front are vital. We're still in pretty good shape and can probably weather a storm for a bit before bugging out.

Voting for B and Raptor Pilot so 2

Our chances of doing serious damage to the cruiser are not the best with us having expended most of our missiles, and we'd be facing at least even numbers of enemy fighters if not more - presuming the cruiser scrambles everthing on hot alert we could be outnumbered 2:1 or more by fresh fighters.

Afterburn, alpha nuke the transport, bug out. Would like to go for a clean sweep if we can. Presuming everyone can hit the transport quick we can hopefully disengage before the cruiser dumps fighters or htey only get a few parting shots on us - we still hopefully have a round or two we can full move before they're in shooting range.

But no, we're not taking on a cruiser without a dedicated full strike and probably a couple of swepes to thin it's fighters.

Hitting the transports will hurt the Cats - with a cruiser around it means we hae to dance quick, but hopefully the captain can be made to do something dumb and later on we can possibly make a strike on it if we get lucky.

Anyone with heavy damage should bug out ASAP and disengage. If we're not hurting the transport a lot we should fall out before the fighters swarm us. If we can, hopefully afterburn out of there as soon as the transport's a hulk.

Blowout found mine laying operations boring. At least in training. Fly in, push the button, release the pod, repeat. Switch up on patrol and go to the next zone to do the same thing. This was going to be thier game for the first leg of this operation as she went in formation.

"Dropping." She mouthed to the comm when it was her signal to let the mine shift to space from her position. "Think we're going to get something nice? Or we're just going to get some cheap corvette going through that'll take everything with 'em that the Cats have had around since forever?"

The sudden shriek of another member of the squadron announcing enemy fighters had her whooping, "Let's light 'em up!" Right as Space Case ordered them to form up and the 'escort' comment came through.

"So we're just in time and.." Then jump signatures whooped in as the jump point lit up. "We got Cats!" As the order came in to go for the Ralri's topside and it was scarred by mines going off, Blowout went in formation. She juked her fighter as flak went off and the fighters oriented around 'up' - not that there was such a real thing as orientatio in space, just a matter of perspective.

An energy burst hit her on her strafing run frmo the defense turrets, but didn't do much damage as she went to line up her shots on it. "Going in! Let's peg 'em!" The other pilots were getting in better shots than she was, but the importanc eof taking out a capital ship was massed first and focused attacks. Just like in training.

Popping around, doing another strafing run along the topside that had been bled out, Blowout called out, "Going for lock!" Dancing around to skim the hull of the Ralthi and make sure she wasn't at an angle that it's guns could get her. "Got lock!" She went to dance around as her targeting computer chirped with a red tone. "Firing missile!" Adding in some more energy bursts as she saw the lovely sign of her missile hitting, and the Ralthi breaking up under concentrated fire. "Let's take the tankers and.."

Then the jump signal would shriek as the group was starting to go after the fatties. "Aww klark Big Cat coming through!" Going to whip around her fighter to rejoin the squadron. "What's the orders wing?"

Missiles do so far 60 damage when they hit, and the transport has ~ 450 hull left. Depending on whether it can regen shields or not in the round it takes us to shift and strafe it, if we hit it with 6-7 missiles in one round and a strafing run it -will- die. That depends as to whether we can mass fire enough on it depending on how many fighters go on us. Would think we can do it if we do -not- get engaged in dogfighting. Anyone damaged run and hopefully lwe can pop the transport in a single attack and then get out before we get swarmed.

If things go our way - the Raptors are heavies so we can take a round or two of a dogfight if we have to.

Humans were drinking alcohol five thousand years ago, and they're still drinking it now. Alcohol is humanity's friend.

Can I abandon a friend?
B. We mined the jump point to get some easy opportunistic kills -- well, we got one big one. As much as I think our Raptor jocks are up to the task as pilots, they're just not armed for a knock-down fight against a Fralthi-class. We've got just enough to swing for the fences and chalk up another big cat on the board before that cruiser launches fighters and makes this a dicier proposition.

But the Raptor's can't take the main guns on a Cruiser, so those only have to get lucky once.

But it's still worth the gamble to take out a transport. Even if it's only got sundries and supplies on it that's one less shipment of those for wherever these fighters are coming from which might make them desperate.

Fuck you say?!

B Two passes on the 'Sport by raptors should take it out. It'll probably end up being a running retreat from the Fralthi either way, assuming their first wing is Drathi or Sartha interceptors. As fun as it'd be to break a Kitty Cruiser, the squadron is short missiles and escorts to do it right now. Especially if the moon base drops a fighter wing on the Raptors as they head back to base.

And damaged folks get a head start, can form back up when everyone is well clear of the cruiser's guns. No sense losing fighters and pilots at this point though. We've dented their forces and cost em valuable supplies (there's a war on, all supplies are valuable). It's going to take more than surprise to deal with a cruiser though.

Yeah - anyone damaged immediatley disengage (I presume Dingo's doing this ASAP). Presuming it takes at least a combat 'round' or so for the Cats to drop some fighters even if they're on hot launch, we can hopefully at least get one free pass on the transport by the time they get into shooting range of us, finish it and get out on afterburners.

But, we're not defanging a cruiser. Not a rookie squad without a ton of missiles. Not when it has at least twice our number of fighters ready to drop on us. Best case we take heavy losses and little damage to it or it's wing.

Roster is full before you guys signed up. I am willing to keep you as the first two to jump in when there is a chance to add new pilots or you can choose the often less exciting life of a shuttle pilot. The ship needs two pilots for the refuelling shuttles and two for the administrative/Search and Rescue shuttles. Let me know what you want to do.

Sure, keep me on the reserve / reinforcement list for now

"gently caress you dad, this is what I signed up for".

Vote B as two kills is enough to sate the blood lust, and the difference between "someone may get downed" and "probably everyone will die" is a little too much even for me.
