If it's got a moving picture panel in the back, it's a linking book. If it's dark, it's a broken linking book. Anything more requires knowing what you're looking at.

I'm looking at a book. It's supposed to have taken Avery to Sa, but he never showed up. We're trying to figure out whether it took him somewhere else, or ... they were talking about a "trap book"? Is there a way to tell?

Yes, from what I understand. If it's a true Trap Book, not just a prison Age, he's stuck in there until someone else links in.

If it shows Sa, it shouldn't take him to a different Age, but I cannot vouch for that.

It is possible to tell if it's a trap book from, well, reading it, but that knowledge is possessed by very few these days.
