I always liked it's rock-paper-scissors style mindgames (strikes beat throws, throws beat counters, counters beat strikes), but if you didn't like the Xbox version (which would have been Dead or Alive 2, most likely), it's not like the game has massively evolved beyond adding characters and flashy effects like kicking people down staircases and the like.

This is basically all you need to know, but some words since I'm a sort-of fan.

DOA has basically not evolved since 2 on Xbox. For everyone who screams that some version was better or worse (see thread), you'll find plenty of people who make the same claims about some other version. You should give one of games 2-5 a chance and then you'll know what this DoA thing is about.

DOA is friendly to people who mash buttons, but it isn't a button-masher. I am not a fighting game person, I absolutely hate "competitive" fighting crap, but when challenged by someone screaming "button-masher" I have on occasion taken to beating them mercilessly. I may have even let them pick whether I would do it with counters, strikes, or throws. As it's not the deepest game in the world even a filthy casual like myself can learn a good portion of the moves. I think Soulcalibur is a good comparison here, you can forgive someone for thinking it's a button-mashing game until they come up with someone who knows the game, and then the beating is shameful.

But DOA isn't "tournament-worthy". Personally I don't care, but MLG pr0 360 n0sc0pe people say this is a big deal. IIRC, Soulcalibur continues up the ladder thanks to stance-juggling and other bullshit whatever.

So DOA is kind of simplistic, but still in a good arcade way. Yes, there are boobs and you can throw people off buildings. Also there's usually a demon. Press the buttons, see the boobies, it's fun. If it comes to Steam I'll probably wait for a flash sale but I'll get it sometime.

Yeah, it's a State of Decay style game that focuses largely on the rebuilding/people aspect, not the fighting.

Decided to take a break after 30 minutes due to wanting to save more stuff for later. Obviously a lot of depth/cool stuff in there. Looks like what you can build is dependent on your mechanical skill, making that important. Unfortunately, doesn't seem like you can really make a nonfighter PC, since you can't send people off on scavenging runs without you being there. A bit bummed out by that, especially since my PC had no melee skill at all, so every zombie I met dragged me down and killed me.

Austin seems to be the endgame, judging by the "You need a full party to enter the town" prompts I saw in the outskirts. Wouldn't let me enter with only 3 people, so I suppose a full party is a bit bigger.

Judging from what I saw, it seems a totally competent/fun RPG if you like that style of game. Bit janky/rough around the edges, but that's to be expected on the budget they had.

It's one of the big benefits of being a publisher/developer who truly owns their intellectual property and can do with it whatever they want, even denouncing it if the previous copyright holders (Interplay I think) farmed a sequel out to some small out-of-house development team and the end result was awful.

Deponia is fun, Chaos on Deponia is pretty good, Goodbye Deponia is absolutely wretched. Journey of a Roach is a fun little game, it only lasts three hours though but it has pretty good, albeit easy puzzle design. A New Beginning is a pretty garbage sci-fi story, The Whispered World is supposed to be pretty good, and Harvey's New Eyes is horribly hosed up and you may or may not really like it, though it has a very sudden ending.

Long story short, right now they're pretty much finalizing and optimizing the engine, which means while there's huge upgrades in terms of performance and it being a finished game, it sort of means they're further back in the actual 'full game' aspect than they were when they had a half-done engine but mostly finished assets since they have to rework what they've already got with the finished engine.

From the Kickstarter;

quote:

Yes Carmafans, we’re excited to announce yet another NEW post-Thanksgiving celebratory retail opportunity day… Brown Thursday!

So, you know how you can currently get a FREE copy of the Carmageddon Max Pack and Carmageddon 2: Carpocalypse Now for owning Carmageddon: Reincarnation on Steam Early Access. Yeah! What a great bundle deal!

Well, as of today, Brown Thursday, that bundle has goddamn GROWN!

You know that slightly whiffy leftover turkey lurking at the back of the fridge that you’d normally avoid, but might end up eating, usually by accident, usually when drunk? Well, that’s kind of what we have for you here… Although you might recall it by its other name: Carmageddon TDR 2000! Yes, this old bird has been given a quick sluice-out and pronounced almost fit for human consumption… Because, in a move that some are calling “Their Daftest Hour”, we heroically managed to hold down our leftover turkey lunch for long enough to get Carmageddon TDR 2000 working and on Steam! So, altogether now… woo!

Now, being completely honest here, it’s well known that 1) Stainless didn’t develop TDR 2000 and 2) just about everyone we know thinks that it’s a bit POO. BUT, there’s no accounting for taste, and some people have actually asked us to release it. And so, just for those poor souls (plus anyone else who enjoys getting a “full package”) we’re more than happy to plop it into your Carma collection. And for the rest of us, well…. Maybe give it a spin every now and then to remind everyone what a GREAT JOB we did on Carmageddon 1 and 2!

So, you wonderful Carma peoples, you will now find that Carmageddon TDR 2000 has been automatically added to your Steam games list and is available to install and, er, enjoy.

*Yes, even you fans who think TDR is the best in the series. We still loves ya, even though you’re WRONG. And MAD! Health Warning!

Please note: Just like that whiffy old turkey, don’t blame us if TDR 2000 consumption is rapidly followed by uncontrollable projectile vomiting and violent diarrhoea!

The update before last:

quote:

I am well aware that just recently our contributions to keeping you all up-to-date have been thin on the ground – borderline non-existent (compounded by the - temporary - suspension of our Twitch output)... Apologies for this. So, it’s about time I gave you all some insight into what’s currently occurring here in Carma central.

Over the past couple of months, what's previously just been a very highly pressured dev timetable for the studio has reached yet another level of high pressure, as the team strove to hit our internally set Alpha date (which we've now done - but not made any announcement about, the reasons for which I will come to shortly). Hitting Alpha has also relied on some MAJOR code re-writes, which have all been part of the push to improve performance. Included in this is some deep work on the shaders, which then knocks on to all the materials that are in the game, which then need to be modified, and so on, and the knock-on of this is that we spend yet more significant time with a game that, while progressing, is either performing or looking worse than it did the day before and continues to do so for an extended period.

And so it remains the case that the single most difficult aspect of this development has been that we all agreed, way back when, to re-write Beelzebub (our own all-singing all-dancing engine tech) at the same time as developing the game. Would we make that decision if we were starting again now? Almost certainly not. But at the time, there was no middleware solution(s) out there that were good enough to achieve what we wanted (I'm pretty sure I've said most of this before - so, apologies for repeating myself).

So as I said, we hit the internal Alpha date and have given ourselves another compressed timescale to get to Beta. But the work leading to a successful Alpha has still left the game currently needing a whole stack of data changes to make it all come together and finally work as designed. And that's why we haven't made any big noise about it.

Meanwhile, our lead programmer - having finally got a window to work on it - is flat out improving the AI, and a group of us (me and Patrick included) has moved on to the small matter of gameplay balancing (for instance, I'm about to get on with the final placement of all the PowerUps in all the events, and by that I mean actually doing it, not pointing at a map and giving orders!).

So, that's a bit of summary of where we're at, and as you've all been speculating, we're now looking at "in the New Year" as our new completion date. But this also means we're currently in busy discussion on the publishing side of the fence too (self-publishing still being a relatively new role for us, one which we are still gaining experience in and so to a certain extent making up as we go along!). So, right now I'm not in a position to make any firm pronouncement on the new release date - and to be completely honest, I don't see that announcement actually coming until early next year.

I’d like to end by reiterating our truly massive lurve for you all, and our appreciation for all the support we get from you guys – because even when there’s grumbling going on it’s clearly just born out of your frustration at wanting to see something new and actually get to play the finished game, and I’m with you 100% on that sentiment, as is the whole team!

Anyway, we’re committed to reinstating the Streams as soon as the builds allow, so we can start to tease you all with the large amount of new content that’s now in the game and reinvigorate anticipation for the game! Plus we’ll have new comps coming along, and a programme of new tasters and so on into the New Year.

tl;dr - They re-wrote the engine and got to Alpha, then realized that they needed to do a bunch more work to hit a decent Beta, so deliveries have slipped to the new year.

Edna and Harvey: The Breakout is cool if you can deal with a more old-schoolish adventure game. It can be a bit unstable and you need to find the user fix to not have the game display the ending text in German and to potentially not gently caress you over on a late game puzzle, but it has an absolute ton of unique dialogue. You can use all the standard adventure game verbs on anything and get mostly unique responses. If you like that kind of stuff in your adventure games, you'll probably like it.

It also really opens up after an hour or so in, which is good and bad. Good in that you have a fairly large area to explore with little hand-holding, bad because it can be a pain to figure out exactly what to do, particularly early on when you might feel overwhelmed with all the stuff to click on.
