Not to derail but I think it's wise to invest in something you probably spend hours staring at for days on end. The same applies to people who have crappy desk chairs. To each his own.

You're an idiot if you can't tell the difference between a decent monitor with nothing wrong with it other than it being a CRT, and a chair. The two are not analogous. A decent CRT costs almost nothing these days(especially secondhand), and is more than comparable to whatever LCD monitor you might find in terms of clarity, brightness, and quality. It makes sense, for a person on a slim budget, to not want to pay 5 times the price for something that only provides a benefit in terms of weight and size. A chair is a completely different thing because the dirt cheap chairs are, in fact, not as comfortable to sit in. The dirt cheap CRT is mostly comparable to the LCD.

Cable management is easy for me, since my setup is just sitting on top of an old dresser that has the legs taken off. Don't want to see the cables? Throw them behind the dresser! It's like the best of both worlds.![]() The TV is for emulators. I've since replaced the monitor with a massive and less lovely one, and hooked my M-M-M-MODEL M back up. And yes, it's next to shelves filled with hundreds of VHS tapes despite me not owning something that can play them.

Yep, I live like poo poo. This is kind of a "before" picture, it's as it is right now, but I'm trying to improve it. My plan is to get everything rackmounted (or on shelves) in that cabinet under the rightmost monitor. All my CRTs are good to me. The three that I use are all PerfectFlat Trinitrons, the two main ones do 1600x1200@85Hz. For $35 each. I can rarely find a monitor under $300 that doesn't ghost like a bitch (like that Dell LCD on the left, whose panel I replaced with a PVA one... excellent color, lovely response) or look like total crap (TN panels). Color's great on the CRTs, motion looks great, I just don't take them to LAN parties (that's what the Dell LCD is for). e: I suppose I shouldn't say that all my CRTs have been good. I used to have another 19" like the one second to the right, but it died (logic problem, monitor test works, but the signal itself is the green tube only). Hence the too-large 21". I don't mean to derail, but why are people making fun of CRT monitors? The only downsides I can see to them are higher power consumption and size. If you are destitute enough that you can't afford the power difference between the two, then you shouldn't be using a computer anyways, and I don't know of anything I'd really like to store behind my monitor.

I had used CRT's until I had to move 6 or so times in less than 2 years and got sick of having to move it. It was honestly the thing I dreaded moving most next to my crt tv which also replaced. I live in a small apartment in the city and appreciate not having to have a deep desk just to hold a monitor. My old desk worked well but it was huge and I appreciate having something half the size now.

Because they are giant, it's old technology and anyone who can afford some of the computers we're seeing here should be able to buy a decent LCD, and anyone who complains about ghosting either hasn't used an LCD in the last two years or it's all in their head. I guess the only real reason to use a CRT is for more accurate colors, and even then I've seen plenty of professional graphic artists using LCDs.

My old desk worked well but it was huge and I appreciate having something half the size now. Well I will give you that. I guess if you lived in a tiny studio in NYC or something like that where you really really don't have room, then I suppose it makes sense. It's mostly the resolution parts that gets me. When I moved I picked up a nice 24" Samsung monitor. It was like 600 bucks at the time, and it still suffered from very minor but noticeable "ghosting". You get to take your pick between clarity or FPS. 24" LCDs have pretty high native resolutions, way too high for most people to play newer games like Crysis. So you have to turn the resolution down which means you at least get blurriness from the scaling. I thought it looked terrible so I returned it and got 2 Sony GDW-F900s from a Goodwill for $7.99 each. I love the prices of "obsolete" technology. Anyways, sorry for the bitching and going off-topic there. It's just something that's always bothered me.

![]() I have insane cabling problems. I've been able to stuff most of them behind things (e.g. down the back of the radiator) where they aren't visible, but it's still a terrible mess. I've tried cable ties etc, and it helped, but there are 12+ power leads, god knows how many audio cables, and a bunch of midi leads...the whole thing is unmanageable.
