I always respected Bill Watterson's sense of artistic integrity and notorious aversion to commercialism, up until about 2005 when I remembered that the internet exists where he could publish whatever he wants without editors or sponsors.

Kinda yeah. It started bad but got good. Then he stopped when he had enough money to not need to work anymore. Maybe it's good he stopped? I still like the Simpsons some of the time

I kind of get the impression that the reason he has vanished from the public eye and has never publicly created anything else is because he doesn't want the baggage of Calvin and Hobbes that undertaking any other creative endeavor would invariably involve. It sucks that he has basically decided not to share his talent with the rest of the world, but he has seemingly committed to two decisions that I will never, ever begrudge a creative person for making:

1) Ending a series before it has grown stale
2) Choosing not to compromise their vision for something they created to make money

To hear Bill Watterson tell it, he so was exhausted by the knock-down, drag-out fight he had to retain control of Calvin and Hobbes that he just doesn't have it in him to risk doing it again (even if the world has dramatically changed since he retired).

It's weird, man. I always wished that he'd come back and do something else, even if it wasn't Calvin and Hobbes, but I also think the best thing an artist can possibly do is to leave the audience wanting more. Better that than an audience wishing you knew when to stop.

You absolutely can, though. Every stuffed toy is Hobbes, to the particular kid that owns it.

Having your kid's Hobbes look exactly like the Hobbes in the comic that you the parent used to read isn't important. Actually, having it look the same as every other kid's Hobbes rather than something unique to them would be way worse!
