One thing that isn't really mentioned is the actual effect of inflation on investment, if the nominal value of your investment is stable, you will still lose relative to inflation. It is one of those reason why it is going to be hard for housing prices to ever fully drop but because they are already silently devaluing along with the US dollar. If a house one year is worth $350,000 and it goes up to to $360,000 the next year, it is still a net loss with 10% inflation. It is why while the decline in nominal prices has been relatively slow...it inflation adjusted terms, it has been significantly greater. Also, obviously the reason to own a house is to avoid rent, but as an investment, it is a little more tricky.

Housing as an investment is loving stupid and I wish we hadn't done this as a society to ourselves

It's just SNAP work requirements for adults ages 18-55 without dependents, how much could it cost? Hundreds of lives?

The rate at which you encounter words not present in modern American English is like 1% and more like 1 in a thousand if you don't count prepositions and adverbs. It's really not that alien.

you could get a hell of an education on literature and writing using only Pilgrim's Progress and the Old Testament. I had a professor who is now dead (I think?) whose sole goal in his career was to convince as many people as possible to read nothing but Pilgrim's Progress.

Ardennes posted:Even the Soviet Union forced engineers to at least take some non-engineering classes. When I was in Undeclared Engineering in 2001 @ RPI, we had to take 1 non-psych/non-history humanities elective and an ethics class 1st semester. Engineering Ethics was about environmental disasters caused by industry. I was late to the registration game and got Gender Studies as my elective. I enjoyed them both a lot more than I would have expected but most people took a philosophy, or management elective & the pre-law ethics course where they thinkpiece their way to endorsing genocide.
