Anyone know of a good site to read about the graphics/advanced graphics options on PC? This is the only game I play and I want to mess around in there but don’t know what’s dumb and what’s not. Don’t say geforce experience because it’s also more effort than I’m wanting to put in.

I use geforce experience because that program makes it super easy to get GPU updates but I wouldn't go to it for specific game settings. I have a 1660ti so I can run it p much maxxed out at 60fps but I'm only targetting 1080p. Anything specific about your setup? Specs?

I've been told that some of the grass/foliage settings are a little unnecessary if you're running a bit less of a robust PC - shadows are also quite a taxing resource if you're finding problems hitting peak frames per second :eng101:

Nvidia has a tweaking guide if it is what you were looking for. Visual representations of each setting are available. There are graphs showing how intensive each setting is so you can go back and drop some performance hogs if needed, too.

GTA V has a benchmarking utility, too, so you can see how each setting affects your setup specifically. Hard to give more info without any specs.

Nvidia's guide is quite thorough and Gamer's Nexus also made a GTA V tweaking guide. Both of these are almost five years old.

Thanks for all the replies! I’ll check them out.

And yeah, should have given specs:

I7 6700k skylake
16gb ram
GTX 1070 8gb

I have a crappy 4K monitor and sometimes use that resolution but turn everything down to mid and it’ll keep framerate around 30-60 with stutters and some slowdown for whatever reason. I can crank most stuff up and remain around 60 at 1080p

Mainly it’s the TXAA, FXAA, MSAA and anisotropic filtering stuff that gives me pause. I heard that some are useless if you have others enabled, but the game lets you enable them both no matter how stupid that might be, so idk

Also Wtf is post effects and motion blur, etc

I just want to start with all of the stuff that actually effects the gameplay, like population density/variety... extended flying streaming distance (sp?), etc. then start turning up stuff to make it look prettier

I’ll read up on it some, thx all

I don't think anisotropic filtering has had a noticeable impact on performance for halfway decent PCs for years. MSAA and TXAA (to a lesser extent) can be real resource hogs though.

Thanks... So, anisotropic filtering should be set to x16 or whatever is the highest? Or is it mutually exclusive with the other XXAA’s?

Anisotropic filtering is different to anti-aliasing, and should basically always be turned all the way up on a half decent PC

With the AA options, I would just mess around with them in-game and see what the best image quality/performance is from your perspective. They all work in different ways, I don't think any of them are mutually exclusive (you actually have to have MSAA on to enable TXAA IIRC).

It is the one I linked. It has interactive comparisons where you can drag a slider to see the visual differences. It also answers most of the questions besides what is motion blur.

You press one button in and it optimizes the game to your specific card, that's somehow harder than going through settings guides and trying every option?

Depending on your particular hardware config, GeForce experience can be complete garbage. It always cranks my settings way down from where I would normally keep them and I always have to keep doing a bunch of tweaking after I "optimize" my games anyway, so I never bother with it at this point. What it IS good for is for actually explaining and providing examples for the many weird esoteric settings so you can see what you might actually give a poo poo about turning off/on.

i7-6700K Skylake
32gb ram
GTX 1080 8gb

Graphics:

DX 11
FXAA On
MSAA x4
NVIDIA TXAA ON
VSYNC ON
Population Density Max
Population Variety Max
Distance Scaling Max
Texture Quality Very High
Shader Quality Very High
Shadow Quality Very High
Reflection Quality Very High
Reflection MSAA 4x
Water Quality Very High
Particles Quality Very High (I get stutters sometimes looking at some smoke stacks)
Grass Quality Very High (Ultra is a huge hit to FPS)
Soft Shadows Nvidia PCSS
Post FX Very High
Motion Blur Strength Max
In-Game DoF Effects Off (Just not a fan of DoF)
Anisotropic Filtering 8x
Ambient Occlusion High
Tessellation Very High

Advanced Graphics:

Long Shadows On
High Res Shadows On
High Detail Streaming while Flying On
Extended Distance Scaling Max
Extended Shadows Distance (Resets itself to None every reboot, dunno why)
Frame Scaling Mode Off

These settings keep me at 4071MB/8191MB on VRAM, consistant 60-72 FPS (Ideally 72fps as it is half of 144hz) with again, only minor stutters around billowing smoke stacks.

This is awesome, thanks so much for taking the time to type it out.

As for GeForce experience, I thought it was super awesome too, but because I have a 4K screen it always wants to optimize for that. I’m wanting to tweak settings at a lower resolution. Plus I don’t know if it’s true anymore, but they used to require you make an account which really soured me on it.

If you're used to pushing it at 1080p anyway, you could try pushing it at 4k but with frame scaling at 0.5x. Renders at 1080p but you can have windowed borderless running properly.

Sometimes I'll do that and crank up AA, I've got a similar setup. Mostly I just run at 4k with no AA, though.

Motion blur in my experience is entirely garbage so it's always the first thing that gets turned off.

Today's casino podium car is the first of two unreleased "open-wheel" class F1 cars, the PR4.

And it owns.

This beast cruises at ~120mph, and honking the horn gives you a Lectro-esque recharging speed boost which can get you to hit 175mph if the terrain is good.

It is super quick - accelerating extremely rapidly, braking almost instantly, with very grippy tires that fly around corners at max speed with all wheels completely planted and zero body roll.

Here's what it looks like underneath all those sweet body panels:

(Same method as Trophy Truck / Desert Raid - find the western highway to Chumash and look for the center-lane markers that fly when you hit them - your body panels instantly fall off and reveal the sleek sexy undersides of this F1 beast. The top airduct piece might take a few more hits to pop off!)

I highly recommend abusing your podium spins this week - if you miss it, prepare to spend $3.5mil plus some really expensive upgrades.

so I had never done this before, but decided to try it because I’ve really wanted the F1 cars... started last night and kept goi f when I got up this morning and wasn’t having much luck. I had to leave for a flight so decided for one last spin for keeps. Well of course I won it. Got to drive it for 5 minutes before leaving. I should be back in 48 hours though, lol

No weapons while driving it... that’s interesting. It’s crazy fast though and fun

The faster way to do this (doesn't require that you close the game) this is:

1. To prep, push ps button to open the xmb
2. navigate to settings/network
3. there should be a check box for your internet like an on/off switch
4. double tap the PS button and it should take you back into the game.
5. spin to win
6. if you see that you aren't going to win, double tap the ps button and it will take you to the screen with the check box and uncheck it
7. you get disconnected and sent to single player
8. log back in to gta online and try again

A Reversal of Fortune, Perhaps?
With my quick internet disconnect script, was able to shave each spin to 2.5 minutes turnaround time while I watched some news for half an hour. Confirm F1 cars are their own class (Open Wheels) so they won't screw up supercar races, and they can be used for time trials. I'm guessing the PR4 is the slowest F1 car in top speed, or close to it. It's actually a little slower for highway use than the best Hypercars or Vigilante. But it's incredibly useful for cornering through the city, winding north vinewood streets or vinewood hills.

The downforce is crazy high but if you push to the limits the front of the car pushes up while the back stays on the ground. I wonder if Numpad 8 (Tip the front of the car downward while airborne) has any effect on that? It's hard to tell. I find more than ever I need to use the mouse to peek around corners in advance because there's no time to react to traffic otherwise, and unlike the Vigilante, F1 cars tend to get stopped in their tracks by accidents.

I feel like some people here unable to progress through heists and tougher stuff online haven't tried joining Discord on weekends. More sympathetic if they're console players, less goon community there I think. PC Discord weekends there's groups going pretty reliably, and often people willing to help new players do stuff. I had never touched the Doomsday heists until a couple weeks ago. Now I've done Acts I and II, and done some Bogdan glitches which is a nice $600,000 every 20 minutes. Sitting on $40m now, mostly earned earlier but it makes the game a lot more fun to join public lobbies and not need to win. I enjoy heists a lot more now I don't need to get paid. Getting 95% done then something dumb happens is still 90% of the maximum fun for me as the money no longer matters.

I've had about a 45% success rate beating quick search doomsday heists. Was a nice way to learn the missions. Hosting tough stuff and inviting randoms has a terrible success rate, but if you're joining someone else's you're guaranteed they managed to beat the previous content someway somehow at some point, implying some minimal competency. And all the Doomsday heists can be done with 2 instead of 4. Still fails usually, but it's a step up.
