Some more reports on what the "medal chasers" culture is like. http://www.bloodyelbow.com/2013/3/5/4066506/team-lloyd-irvin-sex-abuse-cult-power-medal-chasers-exodus Here are some swell excerpts. quote:According to a source, Irvin also recently held a meeting with a portion of his team to discuss his prior rape arrest. "There were eight male team members in the room, and he told us the sex was a 'train' and the girl was 'down'... he then said the next day the girl's boyfriend found out about the incident and made her report it as rape." The former student continued, "Lloyd told us he had paid for Matthew Maldonado and Nick Schultz's lawyer retainer when they initially were arrested. And we were given specific instructions to not to tell anyone he did that." quote:A while back, my son and daughter were discussing her desire to practice jiujitsu again (something my son is always encouraging his sisters to do) and she asked what he thought about her coming to Lloyd Irvin's gym to train for a few months. At first my son entertained the idea, but as their conversation became more thoughtful about the logistics, etc., my son recanted. Then he said after a minute or so, "no, I don't think you should come." When she asked why, he said, "I don't want you around Master Lloyd, he can be manipulative and I'm not totally sure I trust him." I was pulled into the conversation by his statement and asked what he meant, but we were distracted mid-conversation and never got back to it. quote:The allegations of improper conduct between instructors and students appear to extend beyond just the main school into affiliate gyms, such as with the story from roughly five years ago, of a then 17-year-old former student at a Lloyd Irvin affiliate school who claimed that she was forced to show her instructor -- not Irvin, but an instructor at the Irvin affiliate school -- all of her text messages and Facebook conversations and then was forced to have sex with him for somewhere around a year. When the incident was reported, the only action taken was to have the instructor removed from the school. This story was corroborated by multiple sources, with one source stating that this instructor was told not to fly back to the gym when the information came out at a jiu jitsu tournament, but no police involvement was ever sought. It seems like this is slowly morphing into MMA/BJJ's version of Penn State. I wonder if the IBJJF and UFC will step up and ban Lloyd Irvin and anyone competing under his name from competing.

Anyone know much about wrestling camps for high schoolers in the Northeast? My GIRLFRIEND's sophomore son wanted to go to an intensive at Lockhaven, but now his eye has been caught by the Ohio State camp. It's shorter and a little cheaper, but with a little more travel expense, so it's sort of a push, expense-wise. Anygoon have any experience with, or knowledge of, either camp?

I'd say go for that one. Edit: With the caveat that it also depends on his level. A JV kid might get more out of a longer camp with more drilling and personal attention, even if it is less of an "elite" camp. It's not like the Lock Haven coaches are bums off the street. A guy who is already a good wrestler is going to get more out of the Ohio State camp even if it is shorter. Thoguh fucked around with this message at 18:41 on Mar 7, 2013 |

Well I was more thinking of a member exodus until the gym itself is irrelevant as a competitive team. We just need to spread awareness of what the hell is going on with them so that new practictioners can opt for something else. Sadly I doubt that other organisations will take any definitive action unless it's in their own interest but maybe I'm being cynical.

Watching a high level black belt pretend to be a white belt is pretty entertaining. The shrimping is amazing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tz_26gVAXCg It's also interesting to see the huge range of skill levels in grappling in action. This guy is tooling purple belts who in turn would tool blue belts who would do the same to white belts and random people off the street. It's funny to talk to people who have no idea how big the gulf is between someone who "sucks" in the UFC compared to a normal non-freak athlete human being. I've got a friend who watches UFC and took some "MMA grappling" classes that consisted of a bunch of completely untrained people rolling around with no instructor. As far as he knows, he would be about as good as a blue or purple belt if he started BJJ because he's somewhere between a world champ and Bob from accounting.

Even a white belt with three months experience can usually tool someone on day one of grappling. Of course, some guys can tool people at higher belt level because you'll find sometimes that guys who're serious competitors get promoted slower than the guys just doing it for fun so tha the competitors can spend some time in the lower divisions and get experience before moving on. I know a blue belt who regularly destroys purples and browns in training.

I had a friend try bjj on an open mat night and rolled with me and a black belt. It was interesting to hear his view: He said it was hard dealing with me and he felt like a child versus an adult. With the bb he said the best comparison was deer versus tiger or maybe a sweater in a spin drier.

Speaking of huge ranges of skill, I rolled with Cobrinha the other day. I'm not a grappling god or anything but I'm decent purple belt training for 6 years I've medaled at a few tournaments etc and I felt about as dumb as I did my first day rolling and he was going light.
