They don't care about shooting people in first person. They care about interacting with their autism chariot in first person. They care about flying around and playing the role of Malcolm Shepard as they fly their starship Millennium Beepop around the galaxy. The primary draw of Star Citizen isn't that it's a game, it's that it's supposed to be some kind of immersive experience. You're not playing a space sim, you're participating in a First Person Universe. Elite is a game that features tight mechanics and a coherent design philosophy that covers every aspect of player interaction. The priority is providing high quality gameplay. In contrast Star Citizen's priority is the narrative. In Elite your character is a sterile, unimportant participant who has no impact on the uncaring galaxy at all. Star Citizen markets itself as something more immersive and player-oriented, that's designed to compel the player to play for one more hour because of how good the story is.

The problem is that the story was derivative and clichéd to begin with and has to deal with the insufferable amateurism of a visionary who thinks that jets in space is still a revolutionary concept for a science fiction universe and is so creatively bankrupt that he can't describe anything without referencing the prior work that he stole it from.

You're giving them way too much credit. Elite is a half dozen half-baked ideas cobbled together into a working game. SC is a legion of grandiose ideas cobbled together into a non-functional mess.

As soon as you get past the god-awful grind of Elite, the player only discovers more grind and :psyduck: design decisions. But it is at least a functional game; unlike SC.

Not only not canon, but a terrible book on it's own. The kind of thing that makes a certain type of "serious fan" get defensive, and then angry.

I like to think of all the insane and pointless "We made it to page XXXX!!" posts are a highminded commentary on the nature of Star Citizen backers and the way that achieving the next 'tier' of funding has taken on a greater importance than the actual development, due in large part to the complete absence of evidence for that development.

But I'm probably wrong and also a moron.

Have you seen the new schedule, it's pretty amusing in how unrealistic it is. Or the video about the making of that schedule...which is honestly pretty boring and I hate watching their media.
But keep in mind, they made a development video about the making of a schedule.

They have a video about the making of a schedule???

As somebody tied to JIRA and other less popular software packages, and of course Word and Gliffy... I bet that video was action packed!

Of course the funny part about making a chart is that the chart itself isn't that important. It's the pages and pages of documents and diagrams and explanations that make all of those graphs have sense to them, and why they are the way they are, and why X takes 10 weeks and Y takes 1 week but Y can't even start until X, and X is really hard so expect delays and probably Y is going to be late no matter what... unless you plan for it.

But you know that's kind of the hard part of software development where no software or flashy movies or motion capture happens. So naturally this part was probably skipped and they just cut to the "Well uh, how long do you really think it takes to get a female/planet/HUD built? Ok! Throw that up there! Two weeks!"

Some day somebody is going to have a post mortem on CIG and I'd be curious if they tried to do everything while cutting as many corners as possible and literally falling into every pit because the easy way is never the right way for any big project. Like trying to cut it all up into "easy bites" and nothing ties together because nobody had a planned out template to follow.
