Directed by: Frank Oz Starring: Nicole Kidman, Bette Midler, Matthew Broderick, Christopher Walken Important Note: I saw this in a test screening situation, so it's possible that the release version will be different. This remake of The Stepford Wives as a comedy is largely predictable and formulaic. These are some of my favorite actors (Kidman, Broderick, Walken), whose talents were unfortunately wasted. Everyone knows that if you give Christopher Walken one meaty monologue, you can save any film. The funniest moments with Walken are in a 50's-style promotional film (think: "Stepford and You!"), but even there he isn't given enough space to do his thing. The ending that I saw was unfortunately completely predictable; usually, I don't predict the ending because I'm absorbed in the moment of the film, but here it was unavoidable. In the ending I saw, Broderick and Kidman drop into the floor at the end of the Men's Club confrontation scene, then there is a final ballroom scene. Broderick switches dance partners with Walken, then sneaks off downstairs. He sabotages all the computer control panels for the different women. The women wake up one after another, and begin to berate their husbands. Not much interesting happens, though. In one final scene, the men are shopping, and Lovitz says "I need to find quilted paper towels, or my wife will kill me." Walken announces that they are on aisle 10. A dud ending. I'm not sure if that will be the released ending, hopefully not. I'll revise my rating if they improve it. There are a few funny scenes like some of the comments Midler makes during the book club scene, just not enough to make the whole movie a good experience. RATING: 3 PROS: Kidman hotness CONS: Too predictable, flaccid writing ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0327162/ Dr. Death fucked around with this message at 23:18 on May 19, 2004 |
