Directed by: Stanley Kubrick
Starring: Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman

When this movie came out in 1999 it was being labeled as an "omg sex orgy romp, Nicole Kidman gets naked/it's almost a porn" type movie by all of the major news outlets (or so I recall). Despite that I was never really that interested in it, for whatever reason. I didn't really know who Stanley Kubrick was at the time, so that was irrelivant. I basically thought it was all a big gimmick to get people to the theaters.

Fast forward to last night, when it comes on TV (completely uncensored, mind you). By now I know a little bit about Kubrick (though still not much), and figure I wouldn't mind seeing some Nicole Kidman titties. Well poo poo, gently caress the titties, this is ended up being a pretty awesome movie.

The plot was somewhat unrealistic, but that made the whole thing even more captivating I think. It was so bizarre that you had to keep watching just to see what the hell was going on.

My only real complaint was the somewhat cliched ending. Will I cheat on my wife? No, no, I love her. Will she forgive me? Why yes, of course, let's go christmas shopping. Omfg happy ending!! The lack of any clear resolution or explanation as far as the cult goes was kind of annyoing, but did leave me thinking, which is good I suppose.

Overall a very good movie. I'm not sure how it compares to the rest of Kubrick's work though, as I've not really seen any of it yet.

RATING: 4

PROS: Intriguing plot, great story telling, Nicole Kidman's boobs
CONS: Somewhat unrealistic, ending could have been better I thought

THE FACES OF THOSE IVE KILLED
THE FACES OF THE DEAD
THE FACES OF THOSE I'VE KILLED

This is a typical Kubrick movie in terms of style, which makes a movie awesome regardless. For that I will vote it a four.

i saw this movie in the theater and this description is basicaly the movies selling point. The plot and acting are nothing to write home about and at best it seemed like kubrick just wanted to show people having sex on screen.I found despite the fact there were good looking women naked on screen my mind wandered on to other things. dont bother with this film, if you want shocking kubrick films with simulated sex acts go see clockwork orange.

A very complex an adult theme is explored in this film, so most of the half-retarded teenage Clockwork Orange fans who saw it did not like it.

The nuainces of American sexuality were dealt with in this film more realistically and brilliantly than in any other film that I have ever seen.

Kubrick's worst, it's upsetting that it ended up being his last movie...a not so perfect ending to an otherwise flawless career :( . That being said, it's not a terrible movie at all, Kubrick's artsy touch is quite obviously apparent throughout as well. Good film overall, just would've liked to have better from Kubrick; I can't think of another Kubrick film I would not give a 5/5 or 5.5/5

This movie had a solid score, and it looked good, which are both points in favor.

Kubrick had been married a long time and tried to make a film about what it's like to be married, the pressures and urges, the tension, the reconciliation, and so on. Having never been married, I couldn't dream to critique the movie on that basis, I have no relevant experience.

I was thinking two steps ahead of much of this movie:

When they asked him for the password, I was shouting at the screen (home viewing) "hey, say there is no password, you're never gonna guess it if there is but it might be a trick." Then at the end when he says his last line, I just knew she was gonna say "gently caress".

But hey, this movie is all about the visual experience. I thought that was worth the rental price. The storyline is minimal, but intriguing in a creepy way. I just don't know how a bachelor can evaluate Kubrick's treatment of the marital psyche, I don't have the first clue where to begin on that.

I didn't hate the movie like so many folks did, and in fact I enjoyed much of it, so I suppose I ought to give it a solid rating. The film looked good and had good music, and I thought it was worth seeing. If you're married, maybe you'll appreciate the range of emotions and action that he's portraying here and like it on that level too.

DONG LARGO DEL BURRO DEL DONG
I saw this on TV the other night and I thought it was interesting enough to watch the whole way through.

Definitely not Kubrick's best (in fact, near the bottom for me) but the general atmosphere of the film was what kept me going (especially the scene with him at the house of orgies...no, not in that way, get your mind out of the gutter). The storyline was really nothing special at all, it goes from your standard "couple dealing with sexual frustration" storyline to your standard conspiracy theory storyline. The acting was terrific, as per usual for a Kubrick movie (if anyone can coax a good performance out of Cruise/Kidman, it's him), save the awkward "lol :420:" scene.

3/5 for the acting, etc.

I think you maybe have to be married to really get the full weight of this movie. I saw it in the theatre when I was twenty or so and, while I liked it, some of the stuff flew over my head. But, get married and have to deal with the issue of trust, and suddenly the movie makes a whole lot of drat sense.

Excellent movie but not really a classic.

I believe the majority of people who went to see this were looking for

A) Porn

or

B) Violence

And of course everyone I heard speaking about it sounded pissed that there wasn't enough nudity or sex shown.

Just like (most of) Kubrick's other films, this movie is about money and class wars. If The Shining didn't have violence, it would be Eyes Wide Shut.

Whenever somebody asks me what my favorite Kubrick is, they might as well be spinning a roulette wheel because I can never pick one. I actually tend to just say the first to come to mind, and when they ask me why that one I tell them, "Because they're all the best". Which they are. Kubrick was a man so meticulous that any film he made is "the best" of his filmography. He was only ever held back by technical limitations. Or, as in the case of Eyes Wide Shut, his death, which has left everyone questioning whether or not he had actually approved the final cut.

The main issue I have with Eyes Wide Shut is the glacial pace at which the film moves. Pauses between dialogue often roll over from "suspense" to "waiting". However, there is plenty of pretty stuff to look at while we wait; it's gorgeously shot (reduced two stops while shooting and then brought back up in post for the grainy quality that confused so many film critics at the initial screenings), gorgeously lit, and gorgeously decorated. Check the Christmas sets. The dialogue, when spoken, is incredible, and, above all, the plot is amazing. The scenes, as well; in this case the whole is just as good as the sum of its parts. It's almost entirely episodic in nature, and pyramidal in structure (the people and locations he visits in the first half he visits in nearly exact reverse order in the second half; he proceeds from wife to sex cult to wife), and this lends to the film's strangely gripping narrative.

Eyes Wide Shut recieved the critical response so typical to Kubrick films: "What the gently caress is this?" This came about mostly due to the film's atrocious advertising campaign, which marketed it as a wild sex thriller porno with Kidman and Cruise getting all kinds of high-class naked, and instead the viewers are treated to a slow-paced meditation on infidelity, sex, and social classes. The first shot is almost comical in its message to the audience; it is Kidman stripping down, and then a cut to the title over black. It's as if the film is saying, "There, Kidman got naked, happy?"

This infuriated the hundreds of sex-crazed individuals duped by the ads, and led to the film's critical downfall. Whether it will ever be widely regarded as highly as any of Kubrick's other films is not for me to say, but I certainly hope it will.

I SAID GOOD DAY SIR
At best, Eyes Wide Shut is the de facto example of what happens when an egomaniac "artist" believes he can do absolutely no wrong and has enough financing to try to prove himself otherwise. At worst, it plays as the pathetic final attempt of a once-great director desperate to film nudity and sex. The direction of action is subpar, blocking and composition not unique or interesting, and concept as pitiable as the man living vicariously through his flat, detestable characters' exploits.

Consider that it's one thing to film the portrayal of a sexually-motivated ritual involving a dozen nude women, and another to write such a scene knowing full well that you'll be involved in the casting process for it. The man wrote a scene for which he would need to sit in a room and screen potentially a few hundred females, asking them to display themselves nude in front of him, and then had the audacity to call the final product, "the greatest contribution to the art of cinema he ever created." A greater self-testament to a pathetic and aging pervert, you'll never find.
