"Something witty."
Directed by: Jackie Chan
Starring: Jackie Chan, Brigitte Lin, Maggie Cheung

The story goes that, much like how the disappointment in Battle Creek Brawl inspired Jackie Chan to later make the classic Project A, his second failed American picture The Protector gave inspiration for his very own cop adventure, a film which as of today has spawned another four sequels and even one spin-off: Ging chaat goo si aka Police Story.

After a spectacularly outrageous opening sequence that sees him single-handedly capture a notorious crime boss, Ka Kui (Jackie Chan) is later assigned to protect the boss’s secretary Selina Fong (Brigitte Lin) in lieu of an upcoming trial, an arrangement that unfortunately soon leads to hijinks that begin to affect both his reputation as a highly regarded cop and his relationship with his hapless girlfriend May (Maggie Cheung).

Made in 1985, Police Story is one of Jackie’s most enjoyable and exciting films, filled with incredible stunt work, fantastically destructive and ingeniously choreographed fight scenes and often hilarious physical and screwball comedy. It was also one of the first Hong Kong action films I ever saw, and to this day remains a favourite with me.

From the insane opening that has Jackie plow through a shanty town in a car and the famous sequence where he hangs on to a speeding bus by only an umbrella, to the lengthy mall brawl that lead to this film being nicknamed “Glass Story”, Police Story has Jackie at his best, delivering a hugely enjoyable movie on par with his best work.

Although it does mildly suffer from some dull stretches in the middle, a weak villain and (in the Hong Kong version) an at times repetitive and obnoxious musical score, Police Story still is an exceptional action-comedy and should be viewed by even the most casual Jackie fan.

5/5

PROS: The outrageous opening and closing action sequences.
CONS: A few dull stretches, some may find the comedy a bit too cheesy and low brow for their liking.

The dub of this was equally excellent, with such classic lines as when a police officer gets up to leave - 'I gotta take a crap', delivered very well.
