That battle was Yang-worthy and the Empire only really avoided disaster due to their absolutely crushing numerical advantage.

the series does make a big point about how the shittiest democracy beats the ultimate dictatorship.

I didn't get that from it at all. I saw the series as saying that dictatorships are more prone to extremes: with Reinhard at the wheel, things get monumentally better and are arguably better than in the decaying FPA, BUT that depends on a single individual and you don't always get a Reinhard; the FPA, even as dysfunctional as it became, was still miles better than the Goldenbaum dynasty. It's been a while since I've watched this, but I seem to recall Yang specifically going over this issue; how one of the reasons he supported democracy unequivocally because while it could get lovely, it wouldn't get as lovely as a dictatorship could get (part of why he refused to take over and institute a dictatorship, even temporarily). That's obviously a simplification, but I recall that being a point.

Rrright. You just agreed with him.

Read it again, baby.

I don't think that my reading comprehension is that bad, but I wouldn't mind being corrected. In what way does the worst democracy beat the ultimate (as in best ruler overall, not most dictatorial) dictatorship aside from the metric of reducinglimiting the potential amounts of future crappiness according to the show? Or is that the only metric that matters?

That being said, I should stop reading this thread because I'm terrified of spoilers.
Also, don't watch the next episode previews. Let me repeat that but more obnoxiously: DO NOT WATCH THE NEXT EPISODE PREVIEWS! There are multiple instances where they will spoil major upcoming events.

I wouldn't suggest forcing yourself if you're not enjoying it. What you've already seen is a pretty good sample of what the show is going for, so if it hasn't grabbed you I would say move on to something you might enjoy more.

Something I've realized is that, even though this thread doesn't get a lot of activity, the slow drip of people popping in to say that they've started watching this show and that it's rocking their world is pretty good.

Also, I really like this post:

As much as that infamous episode makes people flip their tables (and rightfully so!), the one thing that absolutely kills me is Bucock's death.

It's really the ultimate representation of LoGH's central conflict. People have brought up so far how it pits a well-run dictatorship against a poorly run democracy and asks what is preferable, but Bucock's last words put into perspective just how different Reinhard and Yang's lives are. Reinhard is the one that ultimately succeeds at his grandiose goals, the harbinger of change and reform for pretty much the entirety of humankind once he's done, but he is alone. The two people he cares about the most are forever beyond his grasp, and though he has scores of amazingly capable and loyal subjects that will fight and kill and die for him, they will never stand at his same height: even when he hooks up with Hildegarde and it's clear there is affection between both of them, there is an uncrossable gap between them, a distance neither of them can bridge.

Yang, though? He gets poo poo on, he fights to serve and protect a government that hates him and that he despises in return, and ultimately his efforts end up being in vain, but he is not alone. The people that stand with him will fight and kill and die for Yang, just as Reinhard's underlings, but they will also laugh with him and drink with him and play pranks on him and dunk him at space chess for the very same reason: they are his friends, they ride with him because fighting space wars is something you do for your buddies, and the love between Yang and Frederica is genuine, heartfelt and reciprocated. Reinhard's offer to Bucock is tempting, glory and respect from the greatest man in the galaxy, and he turns it down gently because there is nothing Reinhard can offer the old man. It's not even about loyalty to his own failing space nation, it's turning his back to a life of solitude and suffocating social structure - that is not worth dying for, but friends and drinks and picnics and laughter is.

It hits me particularly hard because, well, I'm not American - and in my country, the military did not toast to democracy, they trampled on it and murdered and tortured the people they swore to protect and looted the country for themselves, but Bucock makes the kind of stand I wish they had made.

tl;dr LOGH is loving awesome go watch it yesterday.

Working my way through the audiobook version of Book 1, and the person they got to read it is pretty good. His Yang is a bit more snide and a little less chill than I'd like, but delivery on other parts has been excellent (the introduction of Admiral Fork's Terrible, Terrible Plan being a recent standout).

I think the new series is fine and serviceable with some nice moments, but I am real hype for the movies.

Previous ep had lots of yang wens-happy-hour which is what really matter.
I would watch a full cour of Yang drinking and Admiral Chung Wu-Cheng explaining how best to enjoy day-old-bread.

I really miss the initial confrontation with the PKC from the OVA. It was just so palpably menacing.

It also feels less convincing that the PKC would just up and leave without the added incentive of the fire department showing up and making things... awkward. Like, megaphones and explosives in a suburban neighborhood is all kinds of brazen, but it's harder to seem like a big, scary fascist when firefighters are hauling hoses all over the place.

I've been rewatching the OVA more or less in parallel with Neue These, and I realized that people coming in fresh with the remake are missing out on this rousing speech by Yang before the 13th Fleet departs.
