The problem I have with the word cartoon when used with anime is that it is linked to ONLY something children watch (at least in the US - although hopefully that will change - or is changing - check your local standards). Admittedly some shows are in that age range, but anime (and manga - which I've heard some older Japanese use for both animated and printed images) goes beyond just that limited subset. Basically it comes down to usage, and the social/emotion conatations behind it. You may not have a problem with it, but I prefer using anime instead so I don't get the "You watch a childrens show?!?" whenever I talk about them. And then I have to explain the difference.  So if I use a word they don't know, it's easier to talk about. Of course I don't have to do it in this forum, but it has become kind of instinctive to do so.
