Directed by: Jean Vigo Starring: Michel Simon, Dita Parlo, Jean Dasté The most exciting thing about watching L'Atalante is wondering where Vigo is going to put the camera next. He rarely goes for the conventional, instead giving us the intriguing and unusual shot after shot. He's almost unable to contain himself, constantly shifting to find a new and interesting angle. It's a real treat. Also, the music is absolutely superb. But the film is not flawless. The acting is quite good, but you'll have to endure Michel Simon and his character Jules. He's highly obnoxious and he's showcased far too heavily. And the story is not especially compelling, though it is at least unconventional. Not a masterpiece in my opinion, but it's definitely an excellent work, by a man ahead of his time (who died too far before his time). RATING: 4 PROS: exciting camerawork, ahead of its time CONS: Michel Simon gets on your nerves; story not that great ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0024844/
