ten legs are better than two
Directed by: Woody Allen

Starring: Woody Allen, Natasha Lyonne, Julia Roberts, Drew Berrymore, Edward Norton, Alan Alda, Goldie Hawn, and Tim Roth. Natalie Portman plays a minor role as well.

This story follows the loves and relationships of a large liberal family living in upstate New York.

Woody Allen uses the all-star cast to bring back the genre of musicals mostly lost after the 30s, where lines in the conversation suddenly pour into song and elaborate dance routines. While some of the routines are very funny and the songs well-written, others just serve to interrupt the plot, dissociate you from any reality of the film, and leave you feeling the scene was added not because Allen had a great idea for a song, but just because it had been a while since one had appeared in the movie.

As always, Woody Allen masters complex dialogue where whole groups are talking at once and many very clever and funny things are said that are easily missed the first time through, yet it all flows completely naturally. The acting is great, but what else would one expect from such a cast?

RATING: 4

PROS: Very funny, excellent cast don't get in each others' way.
CONS: Woody Allen plays the same character he plays in every movie, and some musical numbers are cheezy.
