Classy Bastard
Directed by: Agnès Jaoui
Starring: Marilou Berry, Jean-Pierre Bacri, Agnès Jaoui, Laurent Grévill

‘Look at me’ follows a group of Parisians across the weeks leading up to a performance in a small country church by a vocal group lead by Lolita, the daughter of a famous author and publisher named Étienne Cassard.

Lolita has an amazing voice with the dedication to match but her father refuses to recognize her potential as she is overweight. He is continually cruel and insulting to everyone around him but especially his young trophy wife who he ridicules and overrules wherever possible.

Lolita’s voice coach, Sylvia, doesn’t have time to help the group prepare for the concert. That is until she finds out her dad is a publisher and her husband just happens to be an author looking for a publisher. Of course, she doesn’t put it in such blunt terms. Her husband becomes overwhelmed by the seemingly glamorous life of Étienne and starts following him everywhere and trying to be a friend. Even this provides a chance for Étienne to be egotistical and rude.

To me, ‘Look at me’ is a film about disillusionment. None of the characters really like each other (even within families) and none are particularly likeable. This is slowly realised throughout the film. Even Lolita who seems kind and sweet has been made paranoid of well wishers or those in need by her father.

All the characters are selfish to some extent and all look down on one another. Étienne looks down on everyone- it’s the only way he can feed his ego considering he hasn’t written a line of his new book for 6 months.

The film is about the breakdown of relationships through success or a desire of success but it doesn’t ask us to feel pity for the characters (we could easily feel sorry for Lolita if the director wanted us to). Instead, it presents us these real characters in a situation and lets the audience make their own judgements.

RATING: 4

PROS: Excellent acting and emotional attatchment to the characters
CONS: Drags a little towards the end
