I watch mostly DDT, TJPW and occasionally Basara (my DDT Universe subscription is the least-negotiable part of my monthly leisure budget). I'll admit I may be biased because my Japanese is good, but I feel like DDT and TJPW are fairly accessible, all things considered - but only if you do the "homework" of keeping up with @ddtpro_eng and Dramatic DDT, and I can understand not wanting to bother with all that just to watch some wrestling. For the smaller DDT subpromotions you're out of luck, though. DDT and TJPW seem to have relatively large, or at least active, English-speaking followings on Twitter nowadays.

Stardom is good. I'm really behind on it and I haven't been too thrilled with a lot of weird decisions they've made this year (though pulling the trigger on red belt Kagetsu makes up for a lot of it), but it's still solid. Their subtitles are so-so, but they exist, which is the important thing.

I also watch Big Japan, though mostly only really keep up with the deathmatch division, and Freedoms. For Freedoms I only really get what gets put up on puroresudream, since I haven't taken the time to figure out their service yet - I think it's mobile-only, for some reason? I want to check out the local Dotonbori Pro soon, but I don't know if there's any way to see that other than going to the shows.

NJPW used to be the main thing I watched but I don't watch it much at all lately. For the most part I can let Twitter and friends keep up with it for me and just drop in when something sounds really up my alley. I've realized I feel more invested in the smaller promotions that're easier and cheaper to attend live, which I think is a big part of me dropping off on NJPW this year.

As far as I can tell, Asuka identifies as a woman. "Genderless," used as a word in Japanese, doesn't really map exactly to "non-binary." It's used to refer to, like, androgynous fashion etc. a lot more often than it is to people, even among the Japanese LGBTQ community which has far more established terms for NB folks. It's kind of a normie-friendly catch-all term for anything outside cisgender presentation, and I'd be reluctant to assume someone specifically identifies as NB just based on that term.

If you can grasp the most basic fundamentals of reading a room you'll be fine in a Japanese audience. "Don't heckle" like Adaptabullshit said is the only major difference that you might not pick up on with just the slightest amount of common sense. Even at smaller shows, audiences here don't expect direct rapport with wrestlers while they're in the ring (unless it's like, them waving to acknowledge someone shouting out their name before the bell) so seeking that will come across as weird, doubly so if nobody understands what you're saying but it sounds negative.

Anyone looking for indie shows and/or to fill out a Japan trip should keep an eye on Puwota if you're not already familiar. It's a useful, zero-frills calendar showing pretty much every wrestling show in Japan. The English version is pretty clearly machine-translated but that shouldn't be a problem.

November's pretty far out so it doesn't look like much has been announced for Kansai yet.

DDT is fantastic. Even if the comedy isn't your thing, they have a strong roster for solid upper card matches. What I really like about DDT is how they have a sense of play, for lack of a better term, that you don't really find in other promotions as large as they are. Like they just had an excellent event that pit their stable All Out against visiting wrestlers from Sendai Girls; every match on the show was intergender, and it ended in a trios match between six people who'd all just finished wrestling wild singles matches. It sounds gimmicky, but honestly it's my show of the year so far.

Either way, I think the first month of a DDT Universe subscription is still totally free, so might as well check it out.

Sometimes the comedy leans on Gay Sex Funny and becomes tiresome, but only really progresses to intolerable when Maku Donaruto gets booked.

Oh good, I was starting to think I was the only person who doesn't like this guy. All the worst parts of Danshoku Dieno's gimmick with none of Dieno's legitimate charisma or comic ability.

MAO rules, I'd love to see him built up to challenge for a belt.

I figure there's no way we don't get this before too long. He's really over domestically and one of the most well-known members abroad already, and clearly thinks the world of DDT/Takagi (apologies for the shameless plug) and the sentiment appears to be mutual. It wouldn't surprise me if we're still seeing MAO 25 years down the line in weapon rumbles with El Hijo de Super Sasadango Machine.

That just reminds me about how the first time it happened, Stardom posted something real broad and diplomatic like "Hey when you come to our shows, be sure to be respectful of the people around you!" and dude's response was to melt down online for several days and demand Sonny be fired for calling him out like that, while simultaneously insisting he hadn't done anything wrong, and that if he had done anything wrong it was okay because he bought a ticket

- Rojo matches are very fun. I just would like more context for some of them--why did they wrestle in a gym (they also went down to the neighboring Family Mart, and returned for the finish)? I got disappointed when I checked a video that had a bookstore in the thumbnail, expecting some wrestling to happen inside a bookstore, but it was only about dudes talking.

DDT's official English presence is pretty much non-existent, but good places to look for more context are:
@ddtpro_eng on Twitter - Still not technically an official account, but the guy who runs it does work with DDT and their sub-brands sometimes and it's not too uncommon to see wrestlers themselves acting like it's official. Often useful to have open alongside major events while watching them live.

Dramatic DDT - A very long-running fan blog that mostly recaps events and announcements. Note that unless things have changed, nobody involved with it actually speaks Japanese and it's mostly cleaned-up machine translations. Still, pretty reliable and a good source for results and recaps going way back.

If you want to see bookstore pro-wrestling, Here you go

Schneider Heim posted:

- This is more of a general thing, but I wish I knew wrestlers' finishers before watching their matches so I would know what to expect. Sometimes I just get surprised by a finish. Chris Brookes is particularly good a roll-ups, it seems?

To the point that his clothing label is called Death by Roll-Up.

The Dramatic DDT Rosters page may come in handy for this.

Schneider Heim posted:

- Is there a schedule of major DDT events?

Not one available in English as far as I know, but there's a calendar and list on DDT's site that shouldn't be too hard to figure out, at least in terms of knowing when events take place. Anything marked 試合 is an event; 誕生日 are just wrestlers' birthdays. Gold events are DDT, and the other colors are other promotions under the DDT umbrella.

Alternatively, it's a little janky, but you could also go to Puwota and filter by company.

No, it's going to be a full event. They're still in pre-match comments which is probably why the ddtpro_eng account just looks like the zoom call translations.
