I keep on getting it mixed up with The Inland Sea which is another great movie on the opposite side of the spectrum.

Free to roam the heavens in man's noble quest to investigate the weirdness of the universe!

I also watched Inland Empire recently (RIP Lynch), and while I wouldn't go so far as to say I liked it, it's certainly an experience. I don't know if I was actually tired or if it was just the magic of the film, but it made me feel like I was dreaming while I was awake. Even now, trying to recall what happened in the film is like trying to recall a vivid dream - some details and moments spring forth, but the whole is just lost to wakefulness.

Killer of Sheep absolutely one of the greatest movies of all time, long overdue for an upgraded release (although I’m a little bummed it doesn’t include My Brother’s Wedding like the old Milestone dvd)

I've been making my way through my Lynch collection (the only thing I don't have is The Straight Story), do we know why Criterion hasn't put out that or Wild at Heart? (I know they don't have Dune either but the Arrow release is veeery thorough)

I don't know why they didn't but the Shout release of Wild at Heart is very good and has a decent special feature set as well.

Wild at Heart is MGM in North America, Universal elsewhere. Shout has the rights for Blu, but I can see them letting Criterion do a 4K. The Straight Story is with Disney, but possibly rights are expiring because it's StudioCanal everywhere else in the world.

My takes on the May Criterions...

The Wind Will Carry Us - I've enjoyed or loved every Kiarostami I've seen so far, so this is a must-have. Surprised it's not 4K, though.
The Umbrellas of Cherbourg 4K - Great film, can't wait to see the 4K. Though, I'm surprised it doesn't have HDR. Hope they do Young Girls next since the Blu-ray had some nitpicky issues (mostly terrible opening credits digitally redone)
In the Heat of the Night - Eh, I have the Kino 4K and the Criterion Blu, no reason to upgrade unless I can sell the Kino for a lot.
Withnail & I - Lol, just got the Arrow 4K recently, might sell it and replace with this since it seems to be a draw on extras.
How to Get Ahead in Advertising - Have wanted to see this based on how much I love Withnail & I, but even the Criterion Channel copy looked awful.
Killer of Sheep - Charles Burnett is a woefully underrated master, great to see this finally get upgraded from Milestone's DVD.
The Three/Four Musketeers - Finally! I've wanted to see these since forever and have held off the Region B releases. Always great to have more Richard Lester on Blu (hopefully we get Petulia and a restored The Knack soon).

Seems like Criterion is trying to make up for lost time, also interesting how they're fast-tracking the MGM 4Ks they got Kino Lorber to take out of print. I'm guessing it won't be long before they do 12 Angry Men, the Kubricks, and The Night of the Hunter.

Wild at Heart really needs a new scan. Afaik, the scan on the blu is the same transfer struck for the MGM special edition from over 20 years ago.

Almost Blue
Apr 18, 2018
It's weird to me that Lynch didn't seem to care as much about Wild at Heart. With Lost Highway he actively told people that the scan used on the blu-ray wasn't good enough, and with Blue Velvet and Fire Walk With Me he was very specific about not having deleted scenes put out until he could get really good scans and transfers of them and do additional editing. But the ones on the Wild at Heart blu-ray are from a workprint with no sound design and some of them even look like they came from a VHS.

Le Saboteur
Dec 5, 2007

If the Wild At Heart scan is an upscale of the dvd release then that was a scan that was specifically approved by Lynch. So what's available currently is actually the last scan he'll ever have directly worked on.

Same base restoration, except BFI added Dolby Vision HDR while Criterion is opting for SDR. Same case as the Kurosawas and The Seventh Seal. IIRC, the HDR BFI adds is pretty much just putting the film into the expanded color space rather than significant HDR-ness.

Thank you! Still not sure which I want to get in that case. It might just be down to the covers at this point, Criterion’s is one of their best in ages while the BFI cover is pretty basic and sorta ugly in comparison

The Criterion remastered DVD (was one of their earliest DVDs) and Blu-ray are from an older restoration that was still missing a little bit of footage. The Blu-ray was released back in 2009. BFI first released the new 4K restoration as a Blu-ray in 2017, then a UHD last year.

Per DVD Beaver's review, looks like Criterion ended up including both cuts of A Woman of Paris on the Blu-ray after all - the 70s reissue is 72 min long and the alternate version is 79 min. It also has a 13 minute long reel of deleted material.

Nov 6, 2008

Looks like Criterion's 4K UHD of Godzilla vs. Biollante actually has HDR10, but it's apparently like The Virgin Suicides where it's just to allow for the expanded color gamut.

I wonder if this will become a norm for them since some collectors seem annoyed they're not using Dolby Vision or at least HDR10 on all their 4Ks. Of course, there's several brand new films released in SDR like Sound of Metal and Triangle of Sadness, so it's not them being cheap like the Blu-ray.com Forum idiots think.
