The Ice Storm - A decent movie, but why? I guess it'll generate some revenue. I'm not liking that cover at all. IIRC, there's some special features from the previous disc that are missing here.

When I first saw it, I thought Criterion was doing the third "Works of Director" boxset. That IS an ugly cover. I can't remember the last Criterion cover art I really liked.

Oddly enough this is the most excited I've been for a Criterion release since the eclipse Kurosawa box. Not familiar with the other children's films, though.

Thief of Baghdad sounds promising, too. Is it the '24 version of the '40?

Personally, I'm hoping and waiting for a Eclipse set of Hideo Gosha's Dark Samurai films. Three Outlaw Samurai, Tenchu, Samurai Wolf 1 and 2. Gimme!

This is cool. Maybe it's just me, but I generally care gently caress all about most of the extras and just wish Criterion would just publish more titles. It also feels like they spend an awful lot of their time retreading very familiar ground as opposed to bringing out previously-unavailable films. It seems like more and more I'm more likely to be interested in a new Eclipse announcement than a Criterion announcement.

Agreed. I'm loving these Eclipse sets and have no problem with them releasing Japanese films every second set.

Also, 16% on that List of Bests. I figured somewhere between 16-20%. Guess I got some catching up to do.

Just ordered Third Man Blu-Ray and Contempt last night from dvdplanet. Thought about picking up Marienbad's blu-ray too but I've heard some great things about SC's release so I'll hold off for now. I think I'll pick up a few more of those titles at the next big sale -- Peeping Tom, Pierrot le Fou and some Bunuel probably.

When's the next Criterion sale? I remember shortly after the Barnes and Noble one, word on street was that they were gunna have another sale there soon, but it's been quite awhile. Does Amazon's occur at a certain time of the year?

I'm pretty sure DeepDiscountDVD and DVDPlanet have one of their big sales in May.
Can anyone confirm this?

And yeah definitely check out Le Samourai for a cool French crime flick. After you watch it check out Jim Jarmusch's Ghost Dog to see a modern film that was heavily inspired by Le Samourai.

If you're going to do this, you might as well grab Seijun Suzuki's Branded to Kill as well since it's the other huge influence on Ghost Dog.

First day of the sale I went and grabbed the remaining Criterion Blus that I wanted (Chungking Express, Last Year at Marienbad, The Last Emperor, The Leopard and Red Desert) along with that Nagisa Oshima eclipse set.

I just went back and picked up Kurosawa's Dodesukaden and Godard's A Woman is a Woman (which is OOP) on the cheap.

Looks like they still have about half of the titles that were recently announced as out of print.

Took it easy this time around and only ordered a few (for now). Ordered a few favourites: House, Seven Samurai and The Thin Red Line and took a chance on blind-buying The Magician, it seems right up my alley.

A nice stacked month that should be released in time for the next B&N sale. Quick thoughts:

Complete Jean Vigo -- Blind buy for me. I've never seen any Vigo but L'Atalante sounds like it'd be up my alley and how can you go wrong with a filmmaker's entire library for thirty bucks?

The Killing -- Definite upgrade over the MGM DVD I just sold off. I thought Killer's Kiss was rather tame but I'll be happy to give it another spin.

Orpheus -- Meh. Not very interested in this one. Possible rental.

The Battle of Algiers -- Without trying to sound too much like FFD here I think it's a great movie but not one I feel the need to own.

Cul-de-sac -- This movie is so weird and hilarious, I think I'll have to own it on Blu.

If.... -- Great movie, definitely the type of film I'd buy on sale.

Secret Sunshine -- Ehhh. The term "Intense human drama" isn't doing anything to sell me on it.

The Warped World of Koreyoshi Kurahara -- Still haven't made it to his entry in the Nikkatsu Noir set, but this set will be a blind buy regardless. I love Eclipse sets!

Starscream
Aug 17, 2000
I'm also a huge fan of the Eclipse sets, I own about half of them. The idea behind them is that they're barebones releases of films that might otherwise never be released -- or at least not released with as much care as Criterion puts into them.

The Late Ozu set in particular is fantastic and is definitely one of my favourites.

Starscream
Aug 17, 2000
drat I was hoping they'd upgrade Ugetsu before doing Sansho, but I'll still buy the Blu (at the next B&N sale) and watch it and be depressed again.

Ballad of Narayama is probably a blind buy for me and I might grab On the Waterfront for that plethora of extras alone!

No interest in the Dardenne flick or Chronicle, so overall this month's slate is generally good!

Keep those recommendations coming. It's nice to explore a side of filmmaking that aren't trying to be summer blockbusters, or Oscar bait.

Japanese samurai-related Criterions:
Harakiri -- Impeccable storytelling
the Samurai Trilogy -- Beautiful photography and duels
Sword of Doom -- Super violent!
Three Outlaw Samurai -- Quick pace and great style
Rebel Samurai boxset -- 2 great films and 2 good ones

Other:
8 1/2 -- The best movie about movies ever
Chungking Express -- Sweet and a LOT of fun to watch
Fanny and Alexander -- Epic inside look at family, through the eyes of a 10 year old boy
Ikiru -- Understanding life through death
Late Spring -- Very powerful without being grandiose
The Night of the Hunter -- Stylish and haunting
Red Beard -- What it means to be human. I cry every time I watch it
Le Samourai -- Everything about it oozes cool
La Strada -- Warning: You WILL fall in love with Giulietta Masina after watching this!
Ugetsu -- Quite possibly the best ghost story ever made
Z -- THE best political thriller ever made

Those are just some of the titles I couldn't live without. Enjoy!

Having never seen it, I blind bought it and watched it a couple weeks ago. Was too dumbstruck to even try to rate or review it so I put it back on the "To Watch" stack. Like any Tarkovsky film it's spellbinding to say the least. In Solaris he reminds me a lot of Bergman, so take that as you will.

I feel like Criterion is running out of steam on the Eclipse series. They're announced/released less and less often, Kobayashi feels like it was mid-last year, Fassbinder in December and Satyajit Ray in February(?). Kinda reminds me of the ill-fated Art-House Essential series (which, I'll admit was doomed from the start).

I would love it if they released a set every other month, no matter how obscure it is or how many titles are included therein. For example there are only 3 titles in the newest Satyajit Ray set and it's still one of the most sought after releases among all the cinephiles I know both online and off. I know it all comes down to licensing and rights ownership, but how about a Mexican Bunuel set? Or a Late Chabrol? Or something wacky like an 80's Korean Cinema set?

I dunno, I guess I'm just sad to see a good thing on its way out.
