I guess this is an appropriate place to ask, is the StudioCanal BRD version of Ran any good, or is it worth it hunting down the Criterion version?

I guess I would say that technically, it's a visual upgrade on the Criterion DVD. However, all the evidence indicates that StudioCanal simply used Criterion's old HD transfer, which is not Blu-Ray-ready, and it looks like total rear end. What really blows is that Criterion was all set to make a new transfer when StudioCanal decided, for whatever reason, to take the film back and release it themselves.
Eh, that's good enough for me, considering that my version of Ran isn't "lazy transfer" bad, it's "completely loving unwatchable" bad.

thanks for the advice anyway.

What are some worth buying unseen on BluRay?

Close-Up, Walkabout, and Yojimbo look enticing.

Walkabout looks about as good on BRD as you'd expect it to. Not a huge fan of Roeg, but it's my favorite film of his, FWIW.

If you do get Yojimbo, you probably want the two-pack with Sanjuro, which I'm about 95% sure is cheaper than getting them separately. (Sanjuro is every bit as good as Yojimbo)

The first hour of Wages of Fear is boring as hell, the second kicks all sorts of rear end and is worth watching.

Make sure to check your local store first, my B&N still had tons of stuff that was recently taken out of print.

I'm curious, what's the reason to switch from digipak to a different case? Is it just so all your movie spines look the same?

lots of people hate the digipacks for various reasons; i think people complained about them falling out of the slipcases when they took them off the shelf, didn't bother me since i just threw away the slipcase.

Criterion's menu system and interface add value, too. Universal's titles are easily the most irritating to get through since Fox's early releases. A $5 upcharge just to have the "PLAY MOVIE" option be the first thing that shows up after loading the disc would be reasonable to me.

I still kinda wish they did the WB thing with no menus at all, especially since they take loving forever to load on my lovely Panasonic player

speaking of talking animals, seeing as all the other Wes Andersons have gotten a treatment, is Fantastic Mr. Fox in the works (I usually like Wes Anderson's commentaries so I was dissapointed that the 20th Century Fox release didn't have one)

To chime in on the Godard hate, "Alphaville" is the only Criterion I ever sold to someone else after buying it. Seeing as that's one of his most acclaimed films, I've had zero interest in checking any of his other movies out.

I don't think Alphaville was particularly good, but it isn't really that indicative of the rest of his body of work.
