The blu-rays tend to be about $20 during the Barnes and Noble sale, at least online. If you can find a sympathetic cashier, you can usually get ridiculous coupon chains going and get them for next to nothing, but B&N seems to have cracked down on that a bit. They also have been excluding the Criterions from any online coupons.

Any Powell and Pressburger.

Edit: For black and white, go with A Canterbury Tale and The Small Back Room (if you can still find it. It's OOP now). The 49th Parallel is good, but not as great as the two previously mentioned.

Orpheus isn't much of a surprise. Criterion actually said that it would probably be their first Cocteau in blu-ray (which isn't the case now, of course). Shame they lost the other two films in the Cocteau set to Lionsgate.

Now, the complete Vigo, that's really awesome. (So is Orpheus in blu, but, c'mon, at least it's had a decent treatment before)

Anyone have any comments on the Basil Dearden eclipse set? I'll probably buy it anyway at 5.75 a movie but it'd be nice to see opinions on it. I already bought the Naruse set because I hope if it does well Criterion will release more silents.

I've enjoyed all of them immensely. I actually expected Sapphire to be a bit of a chore, with it being a procedural and all, but I think it's one of the best in the set. Buy away.

It's been a while since I've seen a copy, but I remember Final Cut being a pretty massive book. I can't imagine that it would fit inside any sort of regular packaging.

Definitely. It's very likely that my memory is playing tricks on me, though! Amazon has it at 432 pages, but that's sort of in the middle between a small and large book.

Seconding the Malle recommendation. Also, look into the Nikkatsu Noir set, the Kaurismaki set, Klein set, Dearden set, Late Ozu, and the Akerman set.

Edit: And the Oshima set. Can't believe I forgot that one.

Kino has really gotten their act together for their blu-ray releases. The Sacrifice is an excellent edition, as are all their Keatons and their WKWs.

I would say the big names are safe for a release: Gojira, Quadropenia, To Be or Not to Be, etc. Who knows when they'll get around to working on them, but they'd be crazy to just dump those on Hulu

DVD != Bluray

Edit: Oh it seems there is a Gojira bluray. That is odd then, but I'm sure it'd still be a moneymaker for them. People love monsters.

My personal choice would be Naked. It is a film that had me mouth agape the entire running time my first viewing. Now it's agape 95% of the time, but that missing 5% is the opening credits.
