So we're sure the man in drag isn't The Tenant? I haven't seen Cul de Sac but it's weird that two Polanski movies feature cross dressers.

Anyone have an opinion on Mikey and Nicky? Sounds like something I'd like but am curious if it's worth a watch.
If you're at all a fan of John Cassavetes and/or Peter Falk it's a must-watch! It isn't directed by Cassavetes but it feels very much like one of his films. It's like the companion piece to Killing of a Chinese Bookie for me.

More Mike Leigh! More Mike Leigh! I would love to see Criterion release a box set of his early TV films.

Also, Medium Cool is loving great and has been really hard to find until now. It's gonna look amazing on Blu-Ray.

Also I hope this means Criterion will be releasing more of Godard's post-60's work.

The commentary with Gary Graver and Oja Kodar on F for Fake is wonderful. Terry Gilliam's track for Brazil is like a masterclass in filmmaking.
Yeah seconded, Terry Gilliam always does amazing commentaries, I'm sure The Fisher King will be no different. I also love Robert Altman's for 3 Women and Mike Leigh's for Naked, Peter Bogdanovich's for The Last Picture Show.

Non-Criterion, but Steven Soderbergh and John Boorman's for Point Blank is an all time favorite.

That's what I'm talking about! I've always wanted to see that, this is what I wish Criterion focuses more on, extremely rare films that don't even have a DVD release. I understand they probably don't make as much dough on stuff like this, but the last thing I want from them is more loving Michael Bay or Wes Anderson movies.

Only the ending? They actually deleted over 40 minutes of Welles' original footage, one of the great cinematic travesties.

Blind bought An Autumn Afternoon and, no surprises here, it's absolutely fantastic... I was already a huge Ozu fan, but seeing his color work in HD was an absolute joy to behold. Really wish Criterion would get off their asses and release Good Morning on Blu; Ozu's dramas are great and all, but I could really go for a comedy, too.

I think he said that because that was when An Autumn Afternoon was released, Ozu's last film.

Just found this great clip I had never seen. That shot from Mon Oncle with the long hose in the background and the smoke blowing is so Lynchian, you can clearly see the influence. An Eraserhead/Playtime double feature would be a grand idea.

Which of those might I like if I loved Seventh Seal, Wild Strawberries, Fanny & Alexander but was super cold on Persona and Autumn Sonata?
Smiles of a Summer Night is a safe bet, it's probably his most lighthearted and comedic film. Cries and Whispers is incredible but it might be too torturous for someone who didn't like Persona or Autumn Sonata.

He seemed pretty happy with in when they showed it at Lincoln Center last year.

I would normally expect something like Mondo Trasho to be a supplement, like Killer's Kiss was when they released The Killing, but getting the music licenses would be insanely expensive. It's a shame, too, because that needs a restoration even more than Multiple Maniacs does. Waters brought his personal print of it to project last year, but it was so worn and brittle it wouldn't thread, so they showed a near-VHS quality digital version instead.

I suppose they could do an alternate soundtrack or something, but that would be a completely different movie.
The real dream would be to have Hag in a Black Leather Jacket, Roman Candles, and Eat Your Makeup as special features. I've always wanted to see them but they seem lost forever.

Yep, all the great directors are dying this year. Kiarostami was one of the best living, it's such a devastating loss for world cinema. If you have Hulu Plus they have a bunch of his films for viewing such as Close-Up, Taste of Cherry, The Wind Will Carry Us (which I will be watching tonight), Where Is My Friend's House?, and his final film Like Someone in Love. If you aren't familiar at all with him I'd say Close-Up is a good starting point.

Seconds is one of the best movies ever, don't read anything about it beforehand just watch it. John Frankenheimer was making classic after classic in the 60's and Seconds is perhaps his best.

I love A Safe Place and I've never heard anyone articulate why it's supposedly so terrible. I think if it was a French New Wave movie people would like it more, it's a quirky woman's exploration of her sexuality phantasmagoria. Tuesday Weld stares straight into the camera and Orson Welles does magic, what's not to like?
