Deteriorata posted:Cars know when they're on a dyno: Is that less dyno detection and more stopped wheel detection. Because if your fronts arent spinning then the most obvious case is being stuck/wheel spin, and that makes sense as a time to cut power. Unless if this also coincides with detecting a load, which would mean a dyno.

Yeah, it's not necessarily an insidious plot, it's just that a two-wheel dyno will give different results (substantially lower) than when the car is on the road. More of a caution than anything else. This wasn't an issue before cars had wheel rotation sensors, so anyone dynoing a newer car needs to be aware of it.

I think the Giulia Q uses accelerometers in addition to wheel speeds to detect what is happening. It doesn't give the full beans on dyno even if all 4 wheels rotate. It needs to be put in "dyno mode" with a tester.

Shouldn't a car that expensive have an LSD to stop that one legged burnout?

BitBasher posted:Shouldn't a car that expensive have an LSD to stop that one legged burnout? No, most companies have gone away from the LSD and using brake based traction control for the LSD because of the "mustang effect" Basically, if you're driving down a slippery road or leaving a cars and coffee on a sunny day and one wheel slips, when the LSD grabs and spins both tires it's going to send the back end sideways. The same traction control/stability control he turned off in order to do the burnout was probably also responsible for stopping slippage.

Powershift posted:No, most companies have gone away from the LSD and using brake based traction control for the LSD because of the "mustang effect" More like it costs gently caress all for the hardware as it's basically a module that uses ABS vs a couple of grand for a good mechanical diff. Powershift posted:No, most companies have gone away from the LSD and using brake based traction control for the LSD because of the "mustang effect" This has nothing to do with companies moving away from mechanical LSDs and substituting it with brake-based e-diffs, and definitely not influenced by idiots at Cars and Coffee. Mercedes is generally known for not having proper limited slip diffs in its cars, as standard (with exceptions being Black Series or other extreme performance variants). If you wanted, you could order this W204 C63 with a Performance Package that included a Real limited slip diff. But generally, Mercedes stability and traction control systems are notoriously restrictive and even when fully off usually re-engage at 50mph. Theyre safety devices. BMW M cars have LSDs as standard, some Audi RS models - yes, even with Quattro - have them, and many other modern performance models have them. poo poo, even the its a PlayStation on wheels Nissan GT-R has a mechanical limited slip diff to complement its computer-aided traction systems.

I think the c63 has a real diff, but the clutches are computer controlled. So it works like a clutched lsd but better because it can lock up before there's a wheel speed difference. I'd guess that guy just does burnouts and drives like an rear end in a top hat all the time and has toasted the clutch plates. jamal fucked around with this message at 06:45 on Jan 16, 2018 |

It locks the diff based on the level of wheel slip detected by the wheel speed sensors, from 15% up to something like 45%, though apparently it can be altered to go all the way up to 100%.
