Sticky tires + long travel suspension and he was setting up and loaded for the left hander when he hit the tall curb with the left front. It was just enough to get it to go over. It looks like if he were to countersteer into it he might have saved it.

Great documentary from 1986 about Cosworth designing a new turbo engine for Formula 1.

It's in 3 parts, but part 3 is apparently not available anywhere. :(

Part 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gqfVAGOaGEc

Interesting just how dated everything is - from the shoebox-sized ECU, to them hand-carving prototype engines out of wood because CAD was considered too expensive for only "a few hundred F1 engines".

I like seeing those kinds of project, but I think they're over-egging how difficult it is. People have been putting Honda engines into Minis for 20 years. Those subframes are available off the shelf yet they're acting like it was a bespoke part they had made to order.

The duke design needs two rotating surfaces to seal against each other - the head with the ports and spark plugs against the rotating cylinder block (barely visible in the video at all). This is one of the major problems that killed off sleeve valves and rotary valves for anything but very niche applications.

And the liquid piston design looks like it would have all the problems a rotary would have, plus the intake is through the crank which has to be hollow and thus much weaker.

You can't mention the Trabant and not watch this video about their quality control:

Panels a little crooked? Loosen some bolts and slam the doors as hard as you can!

um excuse me posted:

A weird thing to think about is how the record setting Veyron was 1200hp with an 8L V16. I feel like that kind of power would be easy with a block like that. I bet you the whole car won't cost $1.7 million either.

The Veyron doesn't need its engine rebuilt every 1000 miles.
