Great documentary from 1986 about Cosworth designing a new turbo engine for Formula 1.

Part 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gqfVAGOaGEc

Interesting just how dated everything is - from the shoebox-sized ECU, to them hand-carving prototype engines out of wood because CAD was considered too expensive for only "a few hundred F1 engines".

Saw this as well. I remember dropping everything I was doing to watch it in a single viewing. Currently designing an engine myself, I can't even fathom how hard it was to do it back then.

I also may have taken a few design ideas from them. :ninja:

Highcroft Nissan Delta Wing

This thing is gonna attempt Le Mans in a few days. It's weird, it doesn't make sense, but you should root for it. Why? I'll tell you why. Racing since the early 90's has stagnated. Everything follows a set formula, in every series. There is no radical design work anymore, even in F1. Delta Wing is different. It's a radical departure from anything we've ever seen, and that's the true essence of motorsport. Innovation, pushing the boundaries of what is the norm.

I hope it goes out there and does well for itself, because motorsport needs things like this to keep things fresh.

Here here!

It would certainly be interesting to see which would be faster. F1 cars do have great aero, but the stagger does more for the car than you might imagine. Not to mention those dirt cars also have aero, albeit not as efficient as F1.

I was going to say, that looks like an engineering fault if anything. Before I even consider anything else, that crank, especially where it broke doesn't look very meaty. I'm sure testing and FEA was done, but under no circumstances should a crank break within the operational envelope of an engine.
