Matlock posted:That video, and the Jalopnik article it spun from, are terrible. It's akin to a piano player bemoaning electric keyboards instead of learning how to use them as well. An artist, no matter the medium, needs to not blame the instrument. What I got out of the video is that new drivers won't be able to handle a car at the limit, which means they'll crash in an emergency. However, new cars keep you from getting to the limit in the first place, so a new driver won't need those skills. Now, in a racing application, that's different. Is argument wasn't that new cars make bad racers, though, but that new cars make bad drivers. I don't believe that.

Or is everything just "the computer simulation says this will work so go ahead and make it and put it on a track" nowadays? I'm assuming that the factor of safety is extremely low on race cars. Higher factor of safety = more weight. Something as simple as a small dent from a rock that was kicked up could have put the part over the edge.

Pretty Cool Name posted:How is driving at night with those huge touch screens? It must wreck your night visions unless it dims down to nothing, and then you can't use it. I stuck a newish VW OEM touchscreen into my older car and I don't have a problem with it at night. It dims when the lights are on, plus I can set the brightness manually in the menus, plus it dims when I dim the interior lights. I personally like using the touchscreen as it can convey a ton of information efficiently and lets me get around the 8 GB or so of music I have on my SD card pretty quickly. It switches displays depending on SD card, CD, AUX, or radio, so you aren't stuck with a single button doing multiple things. What makes it usable in a car is that the unit still has physical buttons for volume and skip tracks and mute. Anything you'd want to do while driving, you can do it without looking. Or by using the steering wheel controls.
