I just tried using my H4N as an interface to record vocals last night and it was nauseatingly bad latency-wise. Like half a second or more. It's definitely very useful for anything that doesn't require immediate monitoring, but as far as recording-music-and-hearing-it-too goes, I can't recommend that function. It's definitely not designed to be used that way, which is a shame because it's so goddamn handy otherwise. It's still a fantastic tool for field recording/live recording/almost everything else.

Ahh ok, thanks for the input.

Really I want both. But a good recording interface is the priority at this point.

Me too. But since they aren't sold in the US I had kind of written it off. I could have ordered one for $400+ from Japan, but who wants to drop that much on something you can't test and don't know how to play? Luckily a local guy on Craigslist studied shamisen in college or something and was liquidating his stock that he bought in Japan for reasonable prices. Grabbed 'em.

The bridge I got from Chords Canada (you can get other things there too), but that's really the only supplier I know of that is in North America. And it's pricey still. There is a site, bachido.com, that looks like it might start selling some things, but the shop isn't up.

My 3100 arrived today, she's a beauty. I swapped out the pickups for EMG 60X/81X, added an EMG afterburner, and put in a Gotoh bridge/tailpiece. The solderless install kit is really nice, even if the diagrams are wrong. I'm not sure if it's because the Afterburner diagram is old and shows a non-X series tone pot or what, but I needed to switch the pickups and output connectors on both volume pots to get things working. Works like a champ now though. Individual volumes, master tone, and afterburner. I also love the tone from the EMG's, the cleans are very chime like and it's obviously well suited for distortion/gain.

I got a new baby today. My lap steel collection is growing almost as fast a my dobro collection. Behold the coolest lap steel guitar ever made. The Sipsey River Steel. It's made from cypress knees taken from the Alabama swamps. The top and back are cypress and give it the shape and most of the tone, the sides are hand carved mahogany. The tailpiece, knobs and nut are bloodwood wiith a brass nut insert. There's an EMG bass pickup in it. The builder and I plugged it into a tube amp with all kinds of pedals today and it absolutely rips. The sound is just overwhelming, very complex, but balanced and warm. I think it will be a lot of years before I figure this thing out completely.

I was lucky enough to get a build spot for a Bernie Rico Jr. Hesperian 8-string which is almost complete. Normally I'd have to wait somewhere around 9-12 months for one since he's absolutely swamped with orders, but somebody was selling their spot from about a year ago so I was able to jump on and get a nearly complete guitar! The price is also amazing, I'm getting this for about 1/2 of what they normally go for.

It's got the following specs (e: just talked to Bernie and updated my poo poo - wooo!!):

Bernie is one of the nicest guys I've ever dealt with, he called me almost immediately after I emailed him to confirm the build spot trade went through and we talked for about half an hour about the guitar, his shop, his famous clients, and what he does to get each guitar built. Since I only have those two pictures of the guitar he's going to take some "rockstar" shots with it so I can admire it some more

Between Bernie Rico Jr, Strictly 7, Oni, Mike Sherman, ViK, KxK, Siggery, RAN, Monson, Mayones, and Jaden Rose there's a huge market for well-made custom extended-range guitars at reasonable prices. I'm blown away that I actually have choices now, and many of them are sub-$2000. While customs aren't for everyone, it's absolutely worth getting if you need non-standard features on your guitar. There's no reason to compromise when you can get something like this.

I've also decided to get another custom, this time completely with specs of my choosing. Still deciding on the builder, I need someone who can do fanned frets well...

Alternative pants: Nov 2, 2009; WILL AMOUNT TO NOTHING IN LIFE.

Just picked up a used Ovation Celebrity GC28.

With the rest of the gang.

The bowl back is a bit strange at first, but you get used to the feel after a while.
Also, you owe it to yourself to try out Martin silk & steel strings for two reasons. One, the sound is incredibly mellow and sweet. Two, they hold pitch at much lower tension. The acoustic is currently tuned to E standard, but the strings feel like they're in Db. I cannot recommend these strings enough.

I tried quite a few guitars and fell on this one because it just sounded completely different, it intrigued me. Sounds a bit weird on overdrive, but great on fuzz.

I've never felt the need to take proper guitar porn pictures before. And despite it coming from b-stock, I can't for the life of me find the finish crack that was mentioned.

Not to mention it sounds brilliant. I don't know if it's all b-stock or just the two I've bought now, but it actually came tuned and set-up. I am just completely in love.

I like them but I just feel like they don't last as long as a lot of other strings. I like DR sunbeams better, they have a similar feel but I feel like they sound better for longer.

Back in February I posted my Agile Harm!

And yeah, they are great copies. The way they rank (from what I read, and from limited experience) is that the 3000s are on par with the high-end Epiphone LPs, and since Gibson's quality control has gone down the toilet in recent years, more reliable than modern, actual Pauls. This is a pretty good written comparison.

Turtle, I guessed from the name that a Special was the low-end Floyd Rose, but how's that stack up against licensed versions and so on? Can it be swapped easily? Does it have known flaws?

Actually in this case the guitar is made in Indonesia where the working conditions are likely only slightly less deplorable.

The Special isn't a bad unit by any means, I'm just fairly picky about trems. I'd actually take a special over most companies' takes on it, IE low end Jackson trems, Ibanez's Edge III, Ibanez's Lo-TRS, etc etc. In any case, it's not going to be on par with a Schaller Floyd, but it's more than a good deal on a guitar that's only 240 bucks.

Basically I'm just a picky pretentious rear end in a top hat who blocks his floyds anyway.

Started this a few months ago, just finished up the paint job at work yesterday.

Lopsided with half the polyphony because one of the pair of 6581s ended up funky. :|

I built a black sammich from the first run, that's equipped with 8581s. When the kit creator opened a last run of orders for them, with this white acrylic as a choice, I had to jump on it. Now I've got some ebony and ivory kinda thang going on. :fap:

No pictures yet but I picked up a Danelectro Wasabi Forward/Reverse Delay (Retail ~$120) for 4 bucks at an estate sale! I played around with it a little last night and it's pretty awesome. I've never had a delay pedal before but I was able to make some crazy soundscapes. With the mix and delay time turned down low it makes a nice echo effect too.

Limited model for the Japanese market, the product code is MG69/MH/STP. It's brand new so I'm guessing it's this year.
Also, it's not just bad lighting, it really is matte black.

Getting used to it now and all it can do, it's really very nice to play. May need to get it set up again though as there's just a little buzz on one or two strings, no mind though as the store I got it from has unlimited after-service.
