Just got back from picking up some of these at Best Buy:  Also ordered a Shure M97xE cartridge and an Audio Source Amp 100 today:  I'm still trying to decide what phono preamp to run. In my price range (~$50) it looks like it's either the TCC TC-750 or the Rolls VP29. Anyone have any experience with either of them? I'm leaning towards the Rolls since it has a headphone out.

My humble setup: The TV, main DVD player, CD Player, and Turntable are all SONY. I'm planning to upgrade my TV very soon to a nice HDTV. The silver DVD player is a region free Phillips, and the receiver the Yamaha HTR-5540. The main speakers and the center are Polk, as well as the surrounds. I bought them all seperately but decided on all Polk Audios for tambre matching. The only speaker not polk is my sub, which is the SONY WM40 - a great little subwoofer. And here are my DVDs. No pics because I'm across the state ATM, but here's the core: InFocus ScreenPlay 4805 (480p widescreen DLP projector) Homebrew 96" screen Onkyo 1000w 7.1 HTIB XBMC-powered Xbox Windows XP MCE PC w/ Hauppauge PVR150 and a VBOX Cat's Eye 150 HDTV tuner File server w/ 1.5TB of media storage, about 70% full of movies and TV. With this setup, I can play any digital format I've ever cared to try, from TiVo exports up to HD-DVD/Blu-Ray rips all with the push of a few remote control buttons. If you own the DVD/HD DVD, it's legal. If you don't, it's not. Centralizing all of YOUR content on an HDD is one thing, downloading content you don't own is another. I don't see how this is hard. If you think I'm being unreasonable, please say so. There's so many potential DRM/piracy issues in a forum that deals with primarily copy-protected content that I'd like to know how best to discuss them.

With the 4805, I decided to do it a bit better and built a PVC frame around which I wrapped blackout cloth. It's still held together with duct tape, but now there's no seams and the reflectivity is more even. For $34 in parts I can't complain. I'll be trying screen paint once I get settled in the new place.

Inter-pixel gap on the older 480p projectors isn't too bad at all. Sure, it's worse than the newer stuff in 720p and 1080p, but that's where viewing distance comes in. If you're sitting at 1.5x the screen width like you're supposed to, you're sitting far enough away that the pixels blend together a bit, and all you see is a pretty picture.

I've since added a cable box, Wii and Xbox 360. I'm pretty happy with my set up right now, but I'm itching for actual DVD shelves because I've had to start piling new movies on there and it looks awful.

Definitely, If I come up close I can see the screendoor effect but at seated distance I don't see it at all. I am also lucky in that I've never experienced the rainbow effect that many people get with dlp projectors.

I'm not extremely sensitive to rainbows, but I could easily see them if I looked for them on my X1 thanks to the slow color wheel. It never bothered me during movies (not even Sin City) but definitely showed when testing it.

I don't even like the game that much, but since you have to focus on the cros hair(bright spot) half the game is nothing but blurring rainbows for me.

Optoma HD70 DLP Projector Sony 5.1 Reciever ( I forget the model now ) Panasonic DVD player Mustang 92" Electric Screen KLH Left/Right/Sub system (the oldest and weakest bit of the system) MTX Center Channel KLH Rears Yeah, I know the speakers are the weakest bit, but they still put out decent sound, probably about as good as most HTIB systems. Oh, and the HTPC is a 1.6Ghz Duron Ghetto box. However, I've got mythtv on it (Ubuntu linux) with an air2pc HDTV tuner. My Mac Mini comes in Thursday though, and the myth box will go into a closet somewhere. Screen down with flash (that's why it looks washed out)  Screen up, you can see the system components to the left  My cool new furniture I just got   I can drive the entire system with these three remotes   The Optoma HD70

hey boys and girls, i've been reading this topic and there's some nice setups in here... i stumbled into a projector setup when a friend of mine was upgrading to a z5 from a z2, basically i got the thing at a steal of a price and am well happy with it considering how little it cost. the setup has evolved slowly over time and is currently where i'm happy with it. to be honest i don't use it all that much as i like to keep it 'special' if you know what i mean, when i use it, it's a treat. it's a sanyo z2 so nothing amazing, but is certainly a jaw dropper when people come over to play some games or watch a film. it's being projected onto a grandview screen which is 92" diagonal and is fed pictures from a gamecube, 360 and a philips dvd player which'll read anything you throw at it.   eventually i'll upgrade to something nicer, i'll probably do it the next time the bulb explodes so i've got about a year or so of viewing (assuming this one lasts as long as the last one did) before i'll shell out. also if you're interested the sound setup is a set of mordaunt short genies with sub hooked up to a cambridge audio 6.1 receiver. the tdl floorstanders serve 2 purposes, they get my front speakers at a nice height and they work off the cambridge audio stereo amp sat in the unit beneath for whan i want to listen to music properly.

Ha, no it's a pulldown screen with a busted mechanism mounted upside down... the guy I bought the projector off had it going spare and seeing as I didn't (and still don't) have a wall to project onto nor enough cash to buy a proper screen, this did the trick lovely. It's a little bit knackered and you can plainly see ripples on it but whatever, it'll do for now... I've just had to lay out $500 on vet bills so i won't be buying a screen this month

Where do you guys get your HDMI cables from? I've been using Component with my system since I got it in January and quite frankly I think its capable of better. I have 2 HDMI/HD capable devices (Toshiba DVD player and Motorola Cable Box/DVR from Comcast) and a Denon HD receiver with 2HDMI in/1HDMI out (obv.) to my Samsung 50" DLP. I need to pick up 3 cables I believe, of varying lengths and don't necessarily want to pay more for the cabling than I did for my TV + receiver... Open to suggestions. Also, people make a fuss about "incompatible HDMI" like version 2 or version 3 or whatever. Is this a concern? Edit: will post pics of my setup after I get home from practice tonight, just so I don't get too far off-topic.

This is the beginnings of my new system We have: Sharp Aquos 46"XD1E LCD Sony STR DG500 6.1 reciever (arriving tomorrow) Tannoy EFX 5.1 speakers PS3 Old Xbox1 for media centre Dirty couches crap antennae The stand was one of the hardest things to find. I want my PS3 upright, but there are very few stands that allow this without being >3' tall, and even fewer that come in black glass. Same story with the amp, I would have this all up and running if I had taken a silver one, but no dice. Everything aside from the xbox is gloss black, including the speakers. It looks awesome when it's not dusty. I'm not sure how best to tidy the cables here, but I'll deal with that once I get the amp wired in. Hopefully something will come to mind by then. Next on the list are: A rear centre for the 6.1 X360 elite HUGE beanbag to drop in the middle of the floor. The worlds greatest dust vacuum. seriously, that poo poo ain't funny. Maybe an all in one remote, but I dunno. The PS3 one is bluetooth, so I doubt it's catered for. Also, why aren't more remotes bluetooth? changing tracks from the kitchen/toilet is the way forward.

Before I would have to actually move my arm to point at the TV. Now I can move a single digit no matter the location of the remote. This is how entertainment was meant to be enjoyed. I can see how people with fancy-shmancy universal IR remotes would be sad they aren't included in the slack-a-thon though.

I was thinking about doing the Lifetime transfer, but I don't even have an HDTV yet, and I think that PVRs will eventually become commonplace in cable boxes. In addition, TiVo has a large hurdle to overcome, requiring much more hard drive space in order to capture the uncompressed stream, while the cable companies can save the compressed data.

Once I get gainful employment, that will be the first thing replaced. Otherwise, I am happy with my system. I would like to get a Klipsch center channel to match the mains though, as the Polk is about a decade old now. I am living short term with my g/f, so my whole system is not present. I do miss listening to SACD and DVD-A in full 5.1 channel glory, but I shouldn't have to wait a whole lot longer. I want to get an XBOX 360 Elite and HD-DVD add-on at some point too once I get a HDTV.

LCR speakers: Mcintosh HT2s, HT4 Center channel Sub Speakercraft Bass X-12 Interconnects: Ultralink Control: HTM MX3000 touch screen remote and MRF250 RF receiver. Dust Not shown: Remote controlled dimmers on all room lighting, Itunes streamed from PC on other side of the house, Ignore the dead scaler and sat box under the cabinet. Total invested ~ $1,000. Being in the AV business has it's rewards. Most of this stuff was cast off from clients systems that we replaced. Yes, my pictures suck. Lighting in that room sucks for pics (good for watching tv).
