I decided to post some pictures of the current status of the home theater. Right now, the next major item I need is a new flat panel TV for mounting above the mantle. I'm going to go with the new 52" Sharp Aquos XS. With the current setup our old TV sits on a pedestal in front of our fireplace, so when I get the new Aquos XS it can go above the mantle because I specifically designed the wall behind the mantle does not get warm at all, plus I have an outlet and a PVC conduit with a 12 foot HDMI running through it to connect the future TV to my Pioneer 1018 receiver. The next upgrade after that is to get some new floorstanding Klipsch Icon towers and a new Klipsch Icon center channel, and a new Klipsch Icon sub. In the pictures you can see my current setup, a pair of JBL HLS-810 bookshelfs for Front L/R, JBL Studio Series Center, and 2 pairs of JBL Soundpoint 8 Series II in-wall speakers for Surround L/R and Rear L/R. You can see some of the in-wall binding posts for my in wall speaker wiring, I can post some of the pictures from before the drywall went up if you want to see how I wired things. These pics are big and I was too lazy to resize them. http://www.binarybiscuit.com/HT/IMG_2242.JPG http://www.binarybiscuit.com/HT/IMG_2244.JPG http://www.binarybiscuit.com/HT/IMG_2245.JPG http://www.binarybiscuit.com/HT/IMG_2246.JPG http://www.binarybiscuit.com/HT/IMG_2247.JPG http://www.binarybiscuit.com/HT/IMG_2248.JPG http://www.binarybiscuit.com/HT/IMG_2250.JPG http://www.binarybiscuit.com/HT/IMG_2251.JPG http://www.binarybiscuit.com/HT/IMG_2252.JPG http://www.binarybiscuit.com/HT/IMG_2253.JPG http://www.binarybiscuit.com/HT/IMG_2254.JPG http://www.binarybiscuit.com/HT/IMG_2255.JPG http://www.binarybiscuit.com/HT/IMG_2256.JPG http://www.binarybiscuit.com/HT/IMG_2257.JPG

Messadiah posted:I like your take on the fireplace/TV. There is actually a real gas fireplace behind the TV. We hate the fact that it sits in front of the fireplace, but since the current TV is a tube TV, it needs a sturdy pedestal to support it and the mantle won't cut it nor is it wide enough. The new flat panel will be on a fully articulated mounting arm that attaches it to the wall above the fireplace. The power outlet and the HDMI cable is already ran through the wall and awaiting a new TV. The bonus of having the current TV in front of the fireplace is that it bugs the hell out of me and my girlfriend's OCD tendencies. It makes for a compelling reason to get a new flat panel, especially since Sharp's new Aquos XS line is loving optical sex.

UnrealTechno posted:Your receiver can read off your iPhone??? I'm pretty bitter that my 360 can't read them... Yeah, it's pretty seemless and slick. It gives you the iPod interface on the TV screen for you to control and browse through playlists, artists, songs, etc. The only downside is that all the text and the interface are straight out of the 80's. It's more than functional though, so it's a minor quibble. And yes, the new Pioneer 1018 that I have will read off of any iPod and both generations of iPhone.

I ran the fireplace for 3 hours, the wall behind it never even got warm, and with the blower the heat is projected out enough that the mantle barely got warm.

I did all the work myself. Thanks for the compliments on the color choices and design, my fiance was freaking out when I told her I wanted green in the great room, she thought it would be too dark. We built the house a little over a year ago. Before they put the drywall up, I went in and ran all the wiring for the side and rear surrounds, and ran wiring for the speaker wall plates for the fronts and center channel. I ran a pair of HDMI cables through the wall to behind where the TV is. My only complaint is that the electrician put the power outlet for the TV too far down the wall, I was hoping they'd put it up higher so that the TV would hide it. The whole setup is 7.1, HDMI 1.3a compliant. Overall I am really happy with it, it sounds great and looks great (KURO plasmas are still the best looking displays, IMO). In another 10 years when we build our dream home, I'll have a basement in which to do a real home theater, and you can believe me I'll be going all out on that.

Here are some other pictures before the house was painted. Mostly with the speaker grills off. I'll try to find the pictures of the walls before the drywall went up so you can see the wiring in the studs. JBL S Center JBL HLS-810 Right Front JBL SoundPoint SP8II Right side surround and rear JBL SoundPoint SP8II in-wall up close. Four of these make up the surrounds and rears. It's hard to tell but the tweeter driver assembly is actually gimballed in a ball-socket design, thus allowing for the tweeter to be aimed in any direction you'd like. So even though the speakers are mounted on flat walls, you can still have very directional aiming of the sound.

Yeah it is a direct plug in Monster surge protector. I might have to see if I can flip the outlet 180 degrees so that it doesn't stick out so much.

Belle Isle Tech posted:Huge_Midget: The Sub 12 is awesome for the price. It was designed by Deion Bearden, who has a reputation for making awesome subs. The greatroom that my home theater is in is 18' x 18' with vaulted ceilings and I only have the sub at 20% gain and it is more than enough to fill the space with meaty bass. It is awesome for home theater applications and decent for music. If you do a lot of music listening, you might want to go for a sealed subwoofer design.
