I'm looking at a 42" 720p LCD set, and like the sound of the Philips 42PF9641D. Anyone know anything about this model, or Philips LCDs in general?
I just saw it today in a store here in Australia, and they were asking AUD$3300 for it. No idea if I can get it cheaper anywhere else, though.

I have a Phillips 32PF7321, and it's a great set.

Thanks for the feedback, and thanks to ilikegrapejuice for theirs as well.
How is the user interface for selecting different sources and changing options and so forth? Not painful to use?
I guess I should have spent longer at the store actually using the thing and watching some different material.

Thanks, that's good to know. I'm not buying it until I get my new lounge, so it'll be 2 months or so. Plenty of time for me to take a good look around and see how it compares.

There's no harm in downconverting 1080i to 720p. I'd rather watch 720p on a TV with good black levels, color depth and contrast ratios than watch 1080p on the cheapest LCD I could find.

I don't know much about HDTV, but you seem to be speaking my language. I'll be sitting about 11 feet away from the TV, and the size I can afford is around the 42" range (that is, A$3500 or so in Australia.) I'm almost certain that I'd be better off with a quality 720p set than one that handles 1080.
I'm still unsure about plasma or LCD. I like the idea of great black levels, but I'm scared off plasma a bit because of the weight and if they eat more electricity. I'll probably buy whichever I like the look of best. My room has a lot of ambient light, so that might make one technology better than the other?

Earlier in the thread, I said it was a 77u. I meant 600u. I said 77u because I just remember it being a big number on that year's model. Anyway, I set it up with Avia, connected some Sony upconverting DVD player with HDMI, and connected the Verizon FiOS HD box.

It looks great, the picture comes out really nicely. I played around with it, and image retention didn't seem to be there either (but didn't play long enough to really experience). Overall, it seems to be an excellent TV.

I've been looking at the 600U, and have read some very good reports on it. I'm glad you are verifying that it's nice.

I own a TH-42PX600U and it's awesome.

I've seen the 50" Australian 600A version for under A$3k now, so it's getting tempting. I'm still unsure whether I want plasma over LCD or not, though.

Seriously, check in the 50" Panasonic I had mentioned above. Only $77 more than the Westinghouse you mention, and the television is pure sex for the eyeballs. I can't honestly remember the last time I had been more satisfied with a purchase.

I've been seriously looking at the Panasonic 50" (it's the TH50PX600A model here in Australia) and have only heard good things about it.
That Sanus stand up above looks totally sweet, and exactly what I'd be after. Sourcing one here will be tricky, though.
Once that's ordered (or I bugger about for too long and have to get something else) I'll order some Yamaha audio gear (the RX-V2700), and finally work out how I'm going to stream high-def xvid to the whole thing. I'm hoping the AppleTV will be hacked properly by then, or I find something equally appealing. I just don't want a HTPC or game console if I can avoid it.

I'm well aware it's 720. At the distance I'm sitting, I'd be wasting a 1080 set. I'm almost never going to be outputting a PC desktop to it either, so I don't care about 1:1. I mean, it would be a nice addition if I ever needed it, but the times a desktop would be displayed on it would be minimal in the extreme. Having said that, the new 70A model has just come out and it specifies "PC input" as a feature. Price is very similar to what I would have paid for the 600A.
Up- and down-converting would all be handled by the amplifier, so I don't care about what signal I send it.
