avsforum has calibration discs you can download. All you really need is a blue color gel and you can calibrate everything.

Where does one get a blue filter?

I ordered an Antennas Direct DB4 today, $45 shipped. I plan on using it as an indoor antenna - here goes nothing since this is my first foray into OTA High Def. With a cheap converter box and some Philips rabbit ears I was pulling in a few stations from Chicago at over 50 miles away. With the same box hooked into my mom's outdoor roof antenna I pulled in just about every station from Chicago and Milwaukee (50 miles South, 30 miles North respectively). Hopefully with a DB4 indoors I should be able to pick up just about all the Milwaukee locals reliably along with a couple of the good Chicago stations.

What I found more usual is the strength of channel 50 which is based in Gary, IN; I am located in SE WI. It was being easily received on the rabbit ears which at this point is probably in excess of 65-70 miles.

Lastly, anyone know what generation ATSC tuner my Sony KDL32S2010 uses? 4th gen, 5th gen? It doesn't matter a whole lot since I'm planning on getting a Tivo HD or Dish DTV Pal DVR in a few months (Or hopefully some even better OTA DVR that comes out at CES).

Serious answer: don't most HDTVs come with a polishing cloth? I bet you could buff it out. I'm sure there are also products available that wouldn't hurt the screen.

Microfiber cloth.

I wound up getting an open box (like new condition) 46" Panasonic ST30 for $630 from Amazon Warehouse Deals. I won't be home for 2 weeks to enjoy it though.

My 46" ST30 is enroute. :toot:

So my 46" ST30 from Amazon was shattered by their shipping monkeys. At any rate, gently caress buying a TV from Amazon Warehouse deals. It has been nothing but a pain in the rear end from the point of receiving it and finally having the idiots come get the broken one today.

Instead, I wound up paying $670 locally for a 42" ST30 which while expensive for the size is more appropriate for my small apartment anyway. I've had the 42" for a week and it is beautiful now that it is just about broken in. Highly recommended.

Please no..nobody should fall for that bullshit break-in slide poo poo. It's a total crock of poo poo.
I did none of that poo poo. My gt30 works great. You are only wasting your own time with the slides.

It might be overkill but given that many highly regarded calibration guys recommend it I can't say it's a complete waste of time. It may have little affect on image quality but IR/burn in is probably more likely when the panel hasn't been run.

I'm hoping someone can clear up my confusion. I currently own this TV, a Samsung PN42B450 42-Inch 720p Plasma HDTV http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-PN42B450-42-Inch-720p-Plasma/dp/B001ULBPAM

It has a built in digital tuner ("Built-In Digital Tuner (ATSC/Clear QAM)
The SAMSUNG plasma TVs have all the tuners you need for any type of cable service, including high definition.")

Does that mean that I can go to my nearest Radio Shack and buy a $40 HD Antenna, hook it up to my TV, and have all the local channels in HD?

You don't need an "HD" antenna; If you have an antenna laying around, chances are it will work fine. Yes, you'll receive your locals in HD for free over the air.

If you're willing to consider plasma, the Panasonic ST30 is hard to beat period.

The S30 and ST30 are different beasts. I don't give a flying gently caress about 3D but the ST30 uses the same panel as the GT30 and VT30 (Best plasma on the market this year AFAIK) and has pretty good processing. The anti-reflective coating while not perfect is pretty good on the ST over cheaper plasmas as well.

I'm not super impressed with the daytime performance of my ST30 however I run it using calibrated settings that are pretty similar to the default cinema mode so it's not set to put out a lot of light. If I put it in game mode it turns into a torch and gets bright enough for me.

Most of my viewing is in the evening though so that little caveat doesn't bother me much.

Budget - $1,300

Size - 50"+, 55" seems like the ideal size for me

Priority - great 1080p picture (surprise!), excellent response time for my 360, solid blu ray support.

I looked at the KDL55EX500 and 55LK520 at best buy. Both were 1,099 but I'm not sure if I want another LCD tv. The UN55D6000 beside those looked incredible. But I've read some things about "flashlighting" and such.

Any opinions or suggestions on other televisions?

ST30 or GT30 or PN5XD6500/D7000 from Samsung. My dad has last year's D7000 plasma and it's gorgeous. Target was selling the 55" ST30 for $999 the other week, might want to look for that as well.

Good choice. I'm going to keep parroting my recommendation of a ST30, GT30 or VT30 from Panasonic or a D6500, D7000 or D8000 plasma from Samsung. I wish Samsung would make the D6500 or D7000 in 43" size. Not everyone lives in a mondo sized house with room for a huge TV.

Yeah, I have an April build and noticed it finally playing Battlefield 3 yesterday. It's a minor annoyance at worst. I'll get around to calling Panasonic to fix it after New Years.

ST30 in whatever deal you can find. Target was selling that 55" ST30 for $999 for a while, dunno if they still are. Otherwise the 42"-50" ST30s are going for less than that on sale.

Part of the chart being old means it's not taking into account the strides plasma has taken.

For example, the new 50ST50 has an energy guide rating of $21 /year. This a far cry from the ~$80 yearly costs in that chart for plasmas in the 46"-50" range.

In general, most TVs now are only going to cost you around $15-$25 /year to operate energy cost wise.

That's because the standard mode on most plasmas is ridiculously dim. It's probably going to be higher than $21 a year if you calibrate/run it in any mode other than the default.

My Panasonic TC-P42G25 seems to have bit the dust. No picture. The power LED started blinking 4 times for a bit then went to 1 and now blinks 10 times. I've unplugged everything. Left it off four a few hours. Tried different outlets on the surge protector, tried different outlet.

I've had it a couple years but I signed up for an extended warranty through Square Trade. I just filed the claim today.

So here I am back in this thread trying to learn if Panasonic's current plasma line is still the go to.

They don't make high end 42" this year. The UT50 AFAIK comes in 42" and has a good panel but is lacking a lot of the features of the ST50 and above. The ST30 is last year's version and came in 42" if you can somehow find one of those otherwise if you want to go bigger, the ST50 is supposed to be even better.

I have a 42" ST30 and it's an incredible TV. Panasonic plasma is still king in my book.
