Bought a LG 47LW5600 last week. I am not happy with it at all. The 3d is awesome, but the inconsistent panel lighting drives me mad. Any dark movie or game looks like crap on it. I am going to return it and get a Panasonic plasma. I am looking at the 50 inch st30 and gt30. The gt30 costs 200 more. Is it worth the extra money?

Image retention stuff...

I feared IR too until I asked my friend to put his 4 year old Kuro onto the black/white wipe test pattern. Zero image retention. He played like 40 hours of Mass Effect 2 on it and other games and countless movies. He never worried once about image retention. He didn't do the insane break-in they do on AVS forum or anything.

Image retention is for sure real and does happen, but unless you do something dumb and leave it paused for hours with high brightness/contrast it will be fine. I checked for IR at the store and I noticed that IR was worse on Samsung/LG than on Panasonic.

Plasma's do lose brightness as well, but likely it will be so slow and progressive you wont notice it. If you do by then you will likely want a newer tv anyways.

I say forget the insane break-in slides they recommend on AVS forum. Those guys are insane. Just be careful for the first 100 hours or so and just forget about IR and use it like you would with any other tv.

My 47LW5600 arrived today, and I'm not sure what you mean by inconsistent panel lighting. Dark Souls looks great on it so far. The 3D feature is much cooler than I'd expected because it can magically upconvert 2D sources to 3D. This works better with some things than others (anime looks AMAZING in pseudo-3D, for 'Louie' the difference was less impressive), but it's loving astounding that it works at all.

Also, I'm in love with the motion remote. It makes controlling the TV much simpler when I don't have to constantly look down at the device in my hands to figure out which button is where. Plus it doesn't require line-of-sight, which is good because in my current entertainment center setup (this TV replaced a 7-year-old 32" Sharp Aquos) the PS3 blocks the IR receiver from most angles.

My only complaints so far: there's perceptible lag in games, but it only really seems to be an issue with the Wii pointer, and is still quite playable as I don't ask it to upconvert to 3D (which adds another 200ms or so of lag). Also, the built-in apps like YouTube suck, but what the gently caress did I expect from apps on a TV set.
Try the set in a dark room in game mode, look at the corners of the panel. Game mode disables local dimming and makes the inconsistent panel really noticeable on my tv. Actually nevermind, don't do that. Don't sperg out like I did. I think it's a decent tv and passive 3d has a lot of advantages. The poor blacks kill it for me.

With game mode off the lag is fairly bad. With game mode on the blacks go to poo poo due to local dimming being disabled. A lose/lose situation for me.

Just got my Panasonic gt30 from amazon today. So far the picture is awesome. Lightyears better than the LG 47LW5600. The set is not as bright, but in every other way its better. There is zero lag which makes me very happy. My set was made in April 2011, so it likely has the fluctuating brightness problem, but so far I have not noticed it at all. If anybody is worried about it, Panasonic will come out and replace the A-board and that will fix it.

The only downside is the stupid shipping company refused to pick up the LG like they were susposed too.

Now I am going to have to re-call amazon and get the LG returned. Amazon is awesome, but the large shipping companies they use for TV's are small time outfits ran by morons.

About lag. I am not a "pro gamer" at all. I almost never play my 360 online and I really don't care about K/D ratios, but I did notice lag on the LG LCD I bought and returned. I have been playing games since 2004 on a HD crt so I was able to notice it. Turning on game mode pretty much got rid of all lag I could notice though.

The downside to game mode on some sets is that image quality suffers. All the fancy filters and local dimming was turned off on the 47LW5600 and I bet that happens on other models as well.

What really sucks is the lag varies so much between models and companies and is never formally listed anywhere. Thankfully unless you are really sensitive, most people will not notice any lag on most tv's game modes. It is one of those issues on most tv's you will have to go looking for to notice.

Well I have had my Panasonic VIERA TC-P50GT30 long enough to feel like I can say something about it. I read a LOT of poo poo on AVS forum and it got me super paranoid about this tv, but I bought it anyways. As I said before I was unhappy about my LG 47LW5600.

The dudes on AVS forum seem to complain about the same stuff, here is a list and how I feel about them. This should pretty much apply to the VT30 and ST30.

Buzzing:
Yes this tv buzzes, but it is extremely quiet. Only with everything off and you are sitting VERY close will you hear it.

Floating brightness:
This is a huge deal on AVS forum and in reality its a very small issue. Pretty much sometimes you will notice the set change brightness levels to improve the picture. With some movies it is noticeable but its nothing to get bent out of shape about. Panasonic has a fix as well, you just need to call them. I will eventually get around to calling them, but for now it does not bother me.

Image retention:
The guys on AVS forums are pretty much retards. They are doing bizarre stuff like instead of watching the tv, they play a bunch of slides for 100 hours to "break it in evenly." Some even believe that if you watch tv instead of doing the slides you have pretty much ruined the tv and it wont work right with the "D-nice settings." They all nutt-hug some guy named D-nice. Dont listen to this dunce, just use common sense.

I set my brightness and contrast around 50 and am using the tv as normal. I have played Fallout New Vegas for up to 3 hours at a time. Zero image retention. I am going to eventually increase the bightness/contrast setting, but for now I am just playing it safe. You likely dont even need to do this. Just enjoy the drat tv and ignore the spergs on AVS.

In general:
I have noticed that sometimes blacks can have a slight green tinge. I only really notice it close up to the tv. Other than that the picture is pretty drat good. Movies also look great at 1080p at 24hz. I am very happy with this tv.

So a friend of mine bought a HDMI duplexer off Amazon so he could have his projector and 50 inch plasma hooked up at the same time. Turns out the duplexer burned out his tv! Ignore AVSforum, use the tv as normal. I have used my tv (a gt30, the same generation as the tv you got) as normal from day one. The only precaution I used was setting the brightness and contrast to 50 for the first 100 hours. I played fallout new vegas for up to 3 hours at a time. No issues with image retention. Also make sure the pixel orbiter is on. I said a few pages ago burn in is real, so dont leave the tv on a static image for hours at a time. Networks with huge static images like ESPN are not a good idea either for hours at a time.

If you want to be extra paranoid, avoid black bars, set brightness/contrast to 50 and make sure pixel orbiter is on. I have said it a bunch of times already in this thread. People on AVS forums are madmen. Watching a movie during the first 100 hours will not ruin your tv.

Also, are these generally good deals / good TVs? I'm a bit out of the loop; the last TV I had was a 42" Viera (happy with it, I just want a bigger size).

The gt30 has an extra hdmi and VGA port. The VGA port can only do 1366x768. The blacks are a little bit better. It also has a thx mode that I personally dislike.

I went with the gt30 because I wanted vga. I say if none of those things matter for you get the ST30. It's a small difference in picture quality.

I'm in the market for a nice 32" TV to primarily play Xbox and watch Netflix on and I need some advice. I originally wanted to get the cheapest set possible, but after doing research the graphics snob in me won't allow me to look at brands other than Samsung and Panasonic. There's three different types of sets I'm looking at on amazon, and each seems to have an expensive version and a cheaper one:

Samsung LN32D403 720p 60Hz LCD$280
Samsung LN32D450 720p 60Hz LCD$298

Samsung UN32D4003 720p 60Hz LED$350
Samsung UN32D4000 720p 60Hz LED$430

Panasonic VIERA TC-L32C3 720p LCD$320
Panasonic VIERA TC-L32X30 720p LCD$363

My first question is of course, is LED worth it at that size and resolution? I've heard a good Samsung LED can blow the competition out of the water, but I don't know if that's true for this tier. A lot of people seem to like their VIERA's, but that brightness issue was just being discussed in this very thread. Another factor, and I might be hoping for too much here, is the sound quality. I won't be using external speakers of any sort, so the sound out of the box is what I get. I'd be more inclined to consider the set that sounds less like tinny poo poo, even if it means paying more.

In general, which panel technology looks the best? By best I mean deepest blacks, least ghosting and softest picture (jaggies are the enemy). After that, what's the real difference between these alternate versions of everything besides more ports and retarded apps? Is there actually a difference in the panel itself and the quality of image it can produce?

Fog tripper might like his tv, but I bought and returned the same tv and got a Panasonic plasma. The reviews on amazon are great for the 5600/6500 and it appears to be a good value, but the contrast/picture is sub par in its price range.

I want to point out also with that LG that local dimming is OFF when set to game mode. So pretty much you have to deal with input lag or god awful contrast when playing games. Dark movies and games looked horrible on it. This is not the tv for a gamer that cares about picture quality. The tv is more about budget 3d with the whole family.

The lg LWxx5600/6500 looks great on paper but the first time you use it in a dark room you will be disappointed. Also the measured contrast ratio in 3d mode is under like 500:1.

It was a huge hassle mailing back a 47 inch tv. I don't regret for a second returning it and getting a Panasonic gt30.

I just picked up the LG 55LW5600 from Fry's to take advantage of the $1099 sale. Lots of positive reviews here and elsewhere. Great! Except...

Right off the bat I am noticing audio sync issues - specifically, audio coming from my surround speakers noticeably prior to the corresponding video onscreen. I've got a Motorola HD cable box (Comcast) and an Xbox 360 both hooked up via HDMI to a Sony HT-SS360 surround receiver, which is then connected via HDMI to the TV.

As far as I can tell from the manuals, AV sync/delay can't be adjusted with HDMI sources, so I'm at a loss here.

I've seen posts regarding gaming input lag, but this affects everyday TV watching. Has anyone else experienced this issue with this set or have any ideas about what to try next? I'd hate to have to return it and get hit with the 15% restocking fee, but the sync issue is a deal-breaker.

Your receiver should have a audio delay setting you can try that. The set for sure has lag with local dimming on and other fancy features. Try turning off smooth vision or whatever they call the 120hz setting. It makes stuff look fake anyways. It should cut the lag.

I recall there being some sort of audio sync setting in the LG's menu too, but that is for when you have optical connected to a receiver I think.

Also here is a bonus tip for all LG xxLW5600/6500 owners that want no lag. First step is to turn on gaming display mode. This is obvious and for most will make games perfectly playable.

Some people that are really anal will still notice a bit of lag. To get rid of it, change the input you are using label to "PC" for some reason this turns off almost all post processing done by the set. The TV will then have virtually no lag. The picture will look like rear end when you do this though. You cant have lag free gaming and have local dimming on.

I tried Game mode still running through the receiver and it didn't help. I've tried disabling all the other settings like TruMotion, local dimming, energy save, etc. Didn't help either (and even if they did what's the point of the fancy TV with none of the fancy features).

I did, however, confirm that connecting the devices directly to the TV seems to do the trick (no lag when listening through the internal TV speaker), including using the normal video settings on the TV. So I guess now I need to see about using the TV to route audio to the receiver? Can I do this (optical output) and still get 5.1 audio? I seem to remember seeing comments elsewhere that the optical out only carries a stereo signal or is mated only to the COAX input or something like that.
HDMI 1.3 has a feature that will do auto lip sync. Does your receiver have hdmi 1.3 ports?

Also the optical out from the tv is 2 channel only. I think almost all tvs only do only 2 channel PCM.

EDIT: It looks like it has 1.4. I bet the cable box is not hdmi 1.3. I assume blurays and games are in sync as expected?

I was afraid of that. :( I read somewhere else that the optical out will pass audio in the format it's received, even from HDMI sources. But knowing what a merciless bitch HDCP is that didn't sound right to me. I guess I'm confused about how most people set up their surround sound systems. I went the receiver-is-the-hub route specifically because my last HDTV (Vizio 42") optical out was only mated to the coax input.

(An aside, I never had any audio sync issues with the Vizio LCD, same audio setup)

I have no idea what the HDMI spec on the receiver is; the spec sheet doesn't say anywhere. But, the receiver is from 2009 and according to Wiki the 1.3 spec was released in 2006. So, I'd have to assume the receiver is at least 1.3 compat. I'm assuming the auto lip sync feature in the 1.3 spec would account for my receiver not allowing audio delay adjustments on HDMI sources (because it would be unnecessary).

I'm seeing other people posting about the same issue with other receivers connected to this TV. Multiple users with the same problem, but no solutions yet...

EDIT:

After further troubleshooting it's only getting murkier. Noting your suspicion about the set-top box (Motorola DCX3400), I went back to the Xbox 360, which is my only other HD source. Played a DVD, sync seemed fine, even with all the fancy settings on including TruMotion. Then, I played a TV show from Netflix - severe sync issue. I played another TV show from Netflix - sync was fine. I went back to the first show but this time hooked the Xbox directly to the TV via HDMI and using the internal TV speaker the sync was perfect. This is consistent with other TV shows watched on the STB: some have severe sync issues, some minor, and some seem to be dead-on.

It's incredibly difficult to troubleshoot a problem when the results are inconsistent!

Considering I have sync problems on 2 separate sources -- problems which disappear when the devices are connected directly to the TV -- I'd say it's safe to say that the culprit is the receiver, or at least the relationship between the receiver and the TV. The only thing that's changed in my setup is the TV, though, so it's hard to blame the receiver when I never had a problem until now.

I don't mean to derail with a long troubleshooting discussion but considering the 55LW5600 seems to be a hot item lately I figured others would want to know it may have some 'issues'.

Xbox 360 has hdmi 1.2. I never had that issue with my LW5600 and receiver, but I was running an optical from the tv to the receiver since mine does not have HDMI ports. A quick Google of your receiver comes up with the same issue with different tvs..

The restocking fee is pretty drat rough.

That's why I got my TV on Amazon, free returns and no bullshit. I sent back two LW5600's to them and Amazon didn't bat an eye. I think anybody that is thinking of a LG LW5600/6500 should buy it at a place that has no restocking fees. It seems to be a love it or hate it TV.

Falling asleep with Netflix menus on the screen happens often too. And sports. I can't imagine even the "safest" plasmas can put up with this for long.

The worst part is how ESPN and a few other channels never have their logo/ticker go off the screen, even on the commercials. I have seen at stores the ESPN logo burned into the screen permanently. I dont give two shits about that channel so its not an issue for me.
For people that do the same thing for 12 hours a day, yes plasmas are a bad choice. I have put 100+ hours now of gaming on my GT30 and have zero image retention. Then again I dont game for 8 hours straight either. The less you worry about image retention/burn in the less of an issue it actually is for normal use.

If you are a sports fanatic that leaves it on ESPN for 24/7 then dont get a plasma. For people that watch a mix of games, movies and tv do not have to worry about image retention. Passing out with the tv on isnt an issue either. My Panasonic will turn off after 3 hours of inactivity anyways. No, burn in is still possible under extreme circumstances. I have seen floor models sit for months with varying content displayed on them, but still have the ESPN logo burned in. This happened on all brands. (LG, Samsung, Panasonic) If you have phosphors (like all plasma tv's do) there is a possibility for burn in.

The reality is the vast majority of people (like you) will never have a single problem because you dont leave the ESPN logo on for 12 hours a day, every day.

In my opinion the ST30 has a way better picture and darker blacks. Also from what I have seen in person and have read in reviews the LG gets image retention very quickly. You will be able to notice static images that have been on the screen retained even after a few minutes. They do go away and they are not permanent, but this does not really happen on the ST/GT/VT30 line of plasma's. I feel like the LG is way more likely to get burn-in.

Also if it matters, I am pretty sure the LG is not 3d while the ST30 is.

Really they are not even in the same class of tv's. The Samsung plasma sets compare much better to the Panasonic's.

Also note if you get a Panasonic you are likely to have one that has the "fluctuating brightness" issue. Dont let that turn you off from the TV, Panasonic fixes it for free at your home. It takes a tech like 20 minutes to fix it.

foodfight is right, just leave the brightness an contrast in the 50 range and keep the pixel orbiter on and you will be fine.
Edit: after 50-100 hours just set it how you want.

Looking to get a Panasonic 55vt30 and am wondering what kind of warranty I should get for it. I definitely am going to get something, I just had my Sony die on me 13 months after purchase, but I'm not sure what kind of warranty to get. I've used my Best Buy warranty in the past on my Xbox and have nothing but good things to say about them, but they're not negotiating enough on the price. I'm seeing a lot of "mack camera" warranties at different retailers but all I can find are horrible reviews online, though they have an A+ rating from the BBB. Would I be best off just buying an extended warranty through the manufacturer? Would that be about the same quality as a Mac or bestbuy warranty?
If you really want an extended warranty get it from Panasonic or use a credit card like an Amex that will give you an extra year warranty. I went the amex route.

Cheers, that's good to know, I'm not really able to play during daylight hours anyway. I've just about decided to get this Panasonic, but I'd love to hear any other recommendations anyone has.
Its worth it to spend a little more and get a s30.

So I got my new Panasonic P50GT30 and the screen is absolutely amazing. I'm really pleased with the buy, but I've noticed that during some scenes the brightness levels visibly shift slightly up and down. It's especially noticeable on the darker areas of the screen. Is this the dreaded fluctuating brightness problem? Is there a known solution?
If you have CATS off and the tv was made before August then yes you have the FB problem. Fear not, it's an easy fix. Call Panasonic concierge and say you have the fb issue and they will send a tech out to fix it.

Do it sooner rather than later because the part may be back ordered as was in my case. After a tech fixed mine it has been flawless. I have not seen the brightness shift once since it was done.

While waiting for my ST30 to arrive, I noticed that the Panasonic 3D glasses are terribly expensive. Even the supposedly cheaper 3rd Gen models sell for over $150 on Amazon. Does anyone even bother? 3D isn't a huge factor for me, but it would be nice to have the option.

There is a generic pair on amazon that is under 60 dollars that works fine. I own two pairs.
