It feels like I was standing my entire life and I just sat down
I have a weird question for you AV-Guru-Goons. I'm in the market for an inexpensive TV for my bedroom that I can hook up an extension to my main HTPC and enjoy casual watching in bed from time to time. How are TVs these in regards to brightness profiles? Do any brands have a 'night mode' that I can use to not blast my room full of light, but also not be unwatchable during the day because I changed it for evening watching?

Have the quality of the 'lower' (Visio, costco specials, etc) brands come up enough to where someone in my situation (that appreciates high quality, but doesn't demand it for such a secondary use) be satisfied? Looking for a good balance between dollar/performance in the 26-32" range, where 1080p doesn't matter so much.

Appreciate any insight on these items!

Having some weird issues with my 2004/5ish Samsung 61" dlp. My boxee started black screening when playing content and assuming it was the box I bought an Apple TV. The display never comes on but it works perfectly on my newer LG. is there a way to test whether my sole HDMI port is going bad? Otherwise I'll be looking for a new set I think. Which it looks like 60" dlps are all under $1k these days instead of the 2,500 I paid for this sucker that will now become a basement tv!

I'm giving up on my 2004 61" DLP and going to start the buying process of picking up something in that general size range to hang on my wall. I don't have a budget set out yet, as I do not know what features/etc fit into what price ranges. I know that I am not going to be grabbing a high end set though.

Use case: AppleTV streams from my NAS, internet streams of Soccer matches, and basic cable plugged right into the set, with locals in HD. Xbox and Wii from time to time, but not optimizing for gaming as I do not do it nearly enough. We want this next set to be able to be hung on the wall, and I'd really like to have as sleek looking of a frame as I can within reason. Would really like to have it look good on the wall even when it's off. I care about picture quality and such, but again am not looking to over-optimize this aspect either, but do want to stay away from any junk generic brand. I am not opposed to older models, provided they are not known for issues.

I'm not terribly impressed by all of the sweet new features on the televisions these days as I have a PC and AppleTV to bring in all of the 'smart' content.

What am I looking at it terms of the goon-tested/goon-approved sets out there? I do want to stay closer to the budget side of things, but am willing to go up a little if I'm able to get exactly what I want.

Appreciate any input!

I have a pn64d8000 and like it alot but I'm not sure if it is within your price range. It has all the bells and whistles that you say you don't need but as far as I was concerned I was looking for the best picture quality I could for my money in a 60"+ size.

Really though it is hard to make a recommendation without an idea of prices range.

Sorry about that. Thinking less than $2k but would prefer between 1-1.5. Seeing some last years Sammy's that piqué my interest. Is this 240hz stuff legit or just more contrast ratio smoke and mirrors?

This one is actually popping for me, the 55 or the 60.

http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-UN55EH6000-55-Inch-1080p-Black/dp/B0074FGSBY/ref=sr_1_8?s=tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1335706506&sr=1-8

Looking at the feature chart at the bottom it looks really bare, but I cannot see actually using any of those other ones. The camera is interesting, but I bet it's more gimmicky than useful. We have iPhones/iPads for Facetime anyway.

Any experiences people want to share about buying a big TV from Amazon? They an 'honorable' seller of TVs or scheisters in that area?

edit: on snap, this one has mondo reviews on Amazon and is one sale at my local ABC Warehouse for $1,200: http://www.amazon.com/LG-60PA6500-60-Inch-1080p-Plasma/dp/B006VFS4J2 I'll be back after I pull together a proper list and have you guys shoot holes. :)

Hello HDTV megathread, I come with questions.

I got in on a TV deal the other day, a 39" RCA 39LB45RQ for $230. For that price I expect to get something pretty bottom of the barrel, but I have very limited needs for my TV: I want to be able to hook up something like AppleTV to stream stuff from my PC and also to do Amazon Instant streaming (and maybe netflix later).

I'd also like to get free local channels, and this is where my question comes in. I understand it is possible to just plug in the cable and do a channel scan to get them, but it requires a TV with a QAM tuner. Is my discount-brand TV likely to have a QAM tuner, or is it something that all modern TVs have? The spec sheet (intra.oncorpus.com/39LB45RQ.pdf) doesn't say. The manual says this:

"B. Cable TV service
Connect the cable TV wall jack to TV via coaxial cable on ANT/CABLE jack of the back panel. You are ready to receive off-air local digital and analog channels."

Kind of vague.

Is this just going to be one of those "you'll know when you try it" things?

Do you pay for basic cable? If so, it should definitely work. If not, and you're splicing from your cable modem, it'll be a crap shoot. It sounds like your TV definitely supports that. I'm not sure if they'll come in HD (my locals do in HD, but basic do not) or just in SD. Try it, it's free to!

I've all but decided on this set, but still need to see it in person. The reviews are pretty much spot on for what I'm looking for and not THAT discriminating of a viewer for quality. It's at my local ABC for $1,200 and may be able to go lower than that with shrewd negotiating and cash purchasing. Do you guys see anything about this set I should consider or worry about? I did some sniffing around, but don't see a better price than the $1.2K.

Update: My company has a deal with ABC Warehouse where we get special pricing. I can get this set tonight for $1,112. I'm seeing that as a great deal, hopping on it if I like the picture when I see it!

Please let me know because I've been eyeballing that set for a while and am seriously considering picking it up in the next few months.

Got it home and set up last night. It really is an amazing picture. I liked the Panasonic ST50 better in store, but I think because it had a direct Bluray over HDMI instead of an amplified component that was going to 10 tvs. I watched an episode of Sons of Anarchy from an MKV last night and it was truly amazing. This is the best deal in town IMO. I'm very very pleasantly surprised.

Thanks. Any overly annoying image retention or buzzing noise?

Haven't had a lot of time with it yet, I'll do some watching and report back. At this point, no complaints at all. No buzzing, images look crisp/vivid/quick and no lingering.

Some questions here. I just bought this:

Having never owned anything but a 20" monitor, I'm pretty overwhelmed with the whole buying process and just kinda went for it. I have 29 days to return it, no questions asked. Is it a solid choice technically and value-wise? As of right now, I don't put a high premium on 3d or Smart TV Content, so I figure this is a good deal.

If it's a solid choice, what's my next purchases? I was thinking a Wireless Blue Ray Player, Planet Earth DVD Set, HDMI Cables, and Speakers? I already hooked up an Charter Cable, Xbox, Nintendo, and SNES.

Sup PA6500 buddy.

Just bought this last week as well from ABC Warehouse. I haven't had a ton of time with it, but based on my limited viewing and all the research I did, this set is a great value. The picture is amazing once you do some calibrations (check out AVS forums or Amazon reviews for specifics) and looks great even when turned off. I think you did well, because if you didn't, I didn't!

All you 60PA6500 owners that were chiming in a few back, report in! I've been loving this set. I'm not an aficionado by any stretch, but like to think I have an eye for a quality tv. Once I applied some AVS forum settings (that were not fueled by insanity) I think I have what could be the best picture for my dollar. Only thing I wish it had was a built in TV guide like my old Sammy HLR6167 did as I'm piping in a cable line straight into it. Have to have the TV Guide app on my iPhone.

Hey all, I've had my LG 60PA6500 for several months now and have noticed a sync issue with the audio for the whole time and I'm finally ready to tackle it. Speech is about 1/2 second delayed from the mouth movement regardless of what input (digital cable over coax, Uverse over HDMI, HTPC over HDMI) nor does it matter the audio output. I had the optical going into a Yamaha receiver and now my new Sony Soundbar, both have the issue as well as just using the built-in speakers. My uneducated guess is that some video filtering is going on and delaying it without accommodating for the audio. Do you guys have any ideas on where to start? I'd start with components, but all of them have the issue!

Appreciate any assistance. Love this set, it's a huge value and looks fantastic.

There are settings for sync that you can adjust on the 6200, so the 6500 may be similar. Home -> Settings -> Sound -> AV Sync is tweakable.

Thanks for the reply, I'm not getting much on here or AVS. That setting doesn't exist on my 6500, unless there was a firmware update I don't have. That may not matter though as I ran some more testing last night. I again tested the built in speakers and think I may have been wrong about them, they were in sync last night with my cable box, and not so much with my HTPC. The HTPC could have been playing a file with sync issues of its own though. So I ran a test :science: by disconnecting the optical output and instead running the Uverse box through HDMI THROUGH my Sony soundbar subwoofer and switching it through there. Bingo bango, it worked great. This has the negative effect of reducing the ease of use by the spouse and guests (although I have a Harmony remote to offset that, it doesn't work stunningly with the Sony soundbar so we often have to resort to grabbing that remote) since the switching will be done there instead of the TV.

The challenge I face now is that I have my TV on the wall with the wires running through the walls and the components are hidden away in another room. I just ordered some more HDMI cables from Amazon as I want to keep the ones attached to the TV intact for future use. I'll just have to pull up the main HDMI and then rerun the others. Will be a headache, but I think it'll finally be worth it!

So I've got a bit of an issue. My previous two apartments allowed TVs to be mounted but the current one does not. I'll be moving again in six months but in the mean time, I'd like to use my LG 50" plasma TV [LG50PK250]. I have not used the pedestal for the TV yet and my TV knowledge is lacking but I just unpacked everything and I can't seem to figure out how the hell to mount the TV on the pedestal.

The TV needs a flat piece that I'm guessing goes into the pedestal for support but clearly the round pedestal doesn't just "go in" to the TV but looks like it needs said added piece. Am I missing something here? I don't recall throwing anything out when I bought the TV but it was over a year ago and I went straight into mounting it after purchasing it.

The first picture is one I found on eBay, looks identical to my pedestal. If I am indeed missing a piece, where would the best place be to purchase one without spending an arm and a leg? I'm in Canada so eBay options are limited and/or extremely pricey for shipping.

tl;dr - I don't know what the gently caress I'm doing and/or I lost a piece to my pedestal.

Yes, you're missing a piece. Contact LG and show them what you have. I found their support to be quite helpful.
