Fedora Core How do I reconfigure networking? Our ISP is changing our static IP, so I have to enter new addresses and a new gateway? This is a server install so I don't have the GUI tool I'm used to.

Just mirror the drives or backup to a USB drive. The whole point of RAID5 is so you never have to take the server down when you lose a drive, and you're not going to be hot-swapping in your home-built computer, so there's no point. You'll just be in hell when something goes wrong.

What is recommended these days for a proxy server? Right now we're running Microsoft ISA on our SBS 2003 Server (I'll wait for you to stop laughing) Our ERP is web-based and hosted elsewhere. My two goals are making pages loaded faster for the end-users (some pages are image heavy), allowing access to only our ERP provider and not ESPN or YouTube, and of course saving bandwith. Previously I would just install RedHat and Squid, but I'm sure things have changed in the last 7 years. CentOS? Fedora? Ubuntu? Squid or is there something else that's better now?

If you don't care about the data on the drive, or if it's blank, choose 'use entire drive' If you still get the error make a 512mb swap and use the rest for a giant ext partition. You might want to try a different distribution.

I used to be scared of ruining my solid-state memory devices, and then I realized by the time I ruined them, I could buy cheaper, larger, and faster ones. Can you get away with an older version of Fedora? Perhaps start with a erver install? What's the software? You should be able to tweak it enough to get it working with Ubuntu/CentOS/whatever.

Can you edit the hosts allow/deny in the smb.conf? also, which firewall is it using? for example, in iptables you can do something like: # iptables -A INPUT -p tcp -s 192.168.0.0/16 --dport 80 -i ppp0 -j ACCEPT to allow web traffic from 192.168.x.x

I recently installed Ubuntu 8.04 in a VM (ESXi), and I'm having weird issues with network. It quits responding to pings/ssh requests, and then in 10-20 minutes it starts responding again. Even when it's down, I can ping my desktop (XP) from that server. But not the other way around. I can even access other sites on the internet with it. I have squid server using basically the same 8.04 install on the same VM server, and it runs without any problems. I can also ping a machine that is one IP address away from the Ubuntu server (video camera) Is there any kind of weird firewall in Linux that could be interfering? I'm on a cable modem, and the other machine is on a T1. Other hosts seem to ping each other fine.

It wasn't that bad. Then again this was 5 years ago and JavaScript/Flash weren't used like they are today. Use blackbox (maybe fluxbox) as your window manager. I think I was using Mozilla, I'm not sure how well FF 2 or 3 will run on a 166MHz machine. Be warned that decoding an MP3 alone is going to eat up almost half of the CPU.

Here's a question, more related to webhosting I guess. If you have 50 websites hosted on your server, and 25 of them use the same script (say for a blog or image gallery), do you have to install that script 25 times in each users web directory? It seems wasteful, so I just wonder if that's the way that it's done.

I've been using arch for about a year, and i think i've learned more about linux in that year than when i used ubuntu or debian. Slackware works perfectly for this too. I'd suggest trying a couple different distros. Fedora, Ubuntu, Debian, Slackware, drat Small Linux, and even give FreeBSD a shot. It's not Linux but it's worth playing with. Depending on your hardware, wireless can still be a pain. You might want to start with Ubuntu/Mint so that most stuff will work out of the box.
