Yes, it's all free. And the best way to see how it performs, is to give it a try. 4GB of RAM is a bonus.

The distro you chose appears to be designed as a livecd, you'd be better off with a real install distro.

And if you have debian experience, why not stick to it? Not ubuntu but straight debian (lenny just came out)
